Upgraded motherboard problem Part 2
by Guest kleefarr- 7 replies

Following on from the first part..... Upgraded motherboard problem I proceeded to do a fresh install of WIN XP. Everything was going great until "Inspecting system" section and then there was a click and everything turned off. It wouldn't turn on again until it had been sitting for about an hour. When on again it only stayed on long enough to enter set up again and then off after a minute. I suspect that the default settings may not be suiting the upgrade. i will leave over night and then try entering setup again tomorrow and have a fiddle. Grrrr. Kevin

Vista Sp1 info download

Below, Vista Sp1 info download. Hope to goodness it tames the monster down to a more managable savage beast for the average home user. http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=090deaf6-2eaa-4aaa-8b3b-2e199db4a97d&displaylang=en An average home user, I bought a lovely HP M7550n PC last Christmas with Vista Home Premium inside and after 2 weeks of being awed at how grossly inefficient the OS was, I gave it to my girlfriend. The Vista monster will drive a lot of users away from Microsoft & PC's to Apple which (after trying an iMac for 10 days while my 4 year old HP M370n Mce 2004/5 PC was being repaired), will be a gift for me th…

I have a workstation running XP SP2 with the Domain Admins as members of the local Administrator group. When I map a drive to the workstation to the c$ share I can not create a folder. The account I am using is a member of the Domain Admins. The firewall exceptions are set to allow File and Printer Sharing and port 445 is open. Any Ideas? Thanks

redirect path of explorer thumbnail in xp (not website)
by Guest Lonewolf_tj- 3 replies

I've placed a picture on flickr to give you a better idea of what I'm after as my explanations arn't always brilliant. http://www.flickr.com/photo_zoom.gne?id=1468737670&size=o When using windows explorer (on pc not website) in thumbnail mode I'm trying to redirect the thumbnail to a different picture. For example: The thumbnail shows a picture of a rainbow say but when you double click on it the larger picture that opens is different picture within the same folder, say a wedding dress. It was setup on my wifes laptop prior to getting married but the process on how to do it wasn't kept and the person is no longer available to contact.

log on/change user poser
by Guest Steve H- 3 replies

Decided it would be a good idea for my a/c not to appear on the welcome screen of our laptop. (XPHome). 2 x ctrl alt delete, gets up the log in prompt and lets me in fine. But then, if one wants to change user, or if the welcome screen comes back after the m/c has been idle for a while, ctrl alt del does not do anything. How can one get back into an already open a/c (or log in as the administrator for that matter) that does not appear on the welcome screen? Puzzled, S

I had a problem with spyware that I took care of. But now I cannot access certain websites and some websites take a really long time to come up. I have IE7. I upgraded from IE6 thinking that might solve my problem but it didnt. Is there anything else that I can check to be able to access these websites again. I am stumped. I am thinking of just doing a fresh install. Any help would be appreciated. Thank You

Reimaging after replacing hard drives
by Guest lca1630- 2 replies

I have been tasked to replace one of our users old 250 GB hard drives with 750 GB hard drives. We use a built in raid controller in our dell boxes. I was thinking a good solution would be to image his hard drive, break the raid 1 array, reimage the first hard drive, and then add the second and rebuild the array. My question is how will I handle the partion sizes and overall size increase of the hard drive. Will the extra space be just extra space that Ican format later, has anyone done this before? Thanks

Windows installer appears to fail
by Guest martkaufman- 0 replies

Hi. I'm running Windows Installer 3.1. Just recently, after using Windows Update, I get the Windows Installer pop-up that says "Preparing to install..." which stays for a few seconds, then just goes away without completing. It doesn't say what it's trying to install. Naturally, while it's there, almost all activity on my computer stops. I've checked the Windows Update history, and it shows all updates installed successfully. This seems to happen almost every time I go to launch an application. Is there a way to find out what's trying to install, and either install it or cancel it?

NTUSER: ????
by Guest E. Barry Bruyea- 3 replies

I was doing my weekly back-up and when I went to copy my "Documents And Settings" folder from the C: drive, I got a message that the folder cannot be copied because NTUSER: was being used by another program. I have never seen this come up before, so I closed all other programs, rebooted, checked to see nothing else was running and tried again but got the same message. I have copied this folder before with no problem. Anyone have an idea what's going on?

by Guest John- 2 replies

System - Win XP home I have a 20G system HD from an old Win 98 machine where I am trying to retrieve some files. I put the drive in a HD enclosure - USB connection. When I powered the enclosure up - I see the message "New Hardware etc" - I see the HD description - "Quantum Fireball etc" - and finally - "your new hardware is installed and ready for use". Except - I cant't see the drive from "my computer". I look in Admin Tools > Computer Management>Disk management and see it listed - but in the "volume" column there is no letter assigned - just blank .. In the other columns it lists : Partition Basic FAT32 Healthy(Active) Capacity -…

Windows Installer Error Message Pops Up when Starting Apps
by Guest mfitzg- 0 replies

Hi, I use an OEM copy of Windows XP SP2 Home. Recently, I updated CDBurnerXP Pro 3 to version 4 which downloaded into a different folder than the Pro 3 version. I then attempted to delete the Pro 3 version through Add/Delete Programs. However, the uninstall failed when a message window opened saying, "The feature you are trying to use is on a CD-Rom or other removable disk that is not available. Insert the CDBurnerXP Pro 3 disk and click ok." I never had a disk for the program as it was a free download from the website. I clicked the ok button a few times to no avail. I then clicked the cancel button a few times until the message window disappeared. I …
