Preventing deletion of .tmp files
by Guest djs0302@aol.com- 1 reply

Is there any way to prevent a website from deleting its .tmp files when you exit the website? If I try to copy the files I get a this file is in use and cannot be copied message but as soon as I leave the website the .tmp files are automatically deleted. I've tried changing the attributes to read only and I've also tried denying the system the ability to delete files in the temp folder. Neither solution worked. I'm using IE 6. Thanks

Auto open programs upon restart?
by Guest DaveG- 5 replies

Is there a way to set XP so that it automatically opens all the applications, and the files in those apps, that I was using when I shut it down? (I know about the Start folder, but I'd have to manually put everything into it.) Basically, I'm asking for a way to restore the state of my computer when I shut it off. For whatever reason, Stand By won't come alive after an overnight standing-by. Thanks, Dave

I'm rebuilding a machine which is going to need a new install because I don't have good restore disks or partition that would work. I would like to know what product number is used in the full install version of Windows XP Home Edition. I want the version that I can install on another machine if this one brakes down. I don't want the one that is restricted to that machine and cannot be moved to another at later date. To say another way the "part number" listed by some sellersis N09-00048, is this the full install or the oem shortcut? Thanks in advance, Mike

Removing stuck downloads at turn-off
by Guest paullie- 2 replies
Just got a new laptop with XP, and after a couple trips to the internet, I started getting MS or AOL upgrade downloads. When I use the mouse to "turn off", the message says not to shut down the computer manually. At first it worked properly, going thru each download install, then eventually shutting off. Now it's back-logging downloads (27 to date, and I've had the computer 1 day) and is stuck on the first one.. like it's stuck in a loop. After 25 minutes, it was still at download number 1. Any ideas how to purge or bypass this process, or just forget about it and shut down manually? Thanks, Paul

Folder thinks it's a shortcut

In case you missed it, please take a look at my earlier post entitled, "Problem Opening Folder - No Luck Yet". I responded in a thread from yesterday. Several good suggestions have been made, but so far, no solution, and I only have the computer for the day. My daughter just confessed to messing around with the computer when the problem started, but she cannot remember what she did, of course. Any help provided is sincerely appreciated!!

by Guest Jeff Powers- 7 replies

I believe that I upgraded from XP home to XP Professional on a system here at work. But I can't see evidence of that. Could this still have happened and have evidence of home still floating around on the system? Plus I'm having connection issues to that computer. I put the upgrad CD in and it said that I have allready upgraded to latest version. Could you help? Jeff

one hour plus boot
by Guest RealGomer- 9 replies

I read the messages for slow boot. I was was going to try each suggested solution in turn, starting with disabling the integrated (Marvell) LAN controller in BIOS. Well, Windows decided I had made substantial changes to my PC and is demanding reactivation within three days. To add insult to injury, I can't try anything else because I can't get passed the bloody welcome screen. I do here the C drive working, but not constantly. It "clicks" for a second or two, then is silent, clicks, silent, and so on. I tried safe mode, but that wasn't a whole lot better. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. -- I know enuff to be dangerous. Für Elise - Support…

Disk Cleanup.
by Guest The_Newb_Avenger- 3 replies

When my uncle re-installed Windows for me, he configured it (and I don't know why) so that I don't have Disk Cleanup. It's not anywhere. The Run command cleanmgr doesn't work. It is not under Start --> All Programs --> Accessories --> System Tools --> Disk Cleanup And it's not under Properties --> General --> Disk Cleanup, in the drive I want to free up space in. Oh, and what does "Compress drive to save disk space" do? It won't mess up my files right? I'm just asking what does it do? So, is there a way to download this tool? Or at least one very similar to it? Thank you in advance.

100% CPU Usage in XP SP2
by Guest AIANDAS- 9 replies

Hi, I have an IBM R50p I recently bought. SP2 was installed, as I see it in my add/remove section in the control panel. Lately I've been suffering 100% CPU usage to no let down. When I google it, there are companies that pop up that hint maybe the registry needs to be cleaned. To be sure when I run the trial hundreds of errors pop up. Is this the solution? Or what's the way to troubleshoot this nuisance?

Problem with GetSaveFilename and auto completion
by Guest Achim Hammes- 1 reply

I'm using GetSaveFileName with filters for graphic file formats. Wenn teh user enters the first charachters of the filename in file name edit control a lookup autocomplete list appeares. In this List every file is shown thet starts with this charachters. That would be ok so far. But unfortunatly files with unwanted extensions (not in filter) appears also. so if a bad user selects on of them we overwrite wrong filetypes How can we turn off the autocolete or is there another workarround regards achim

UI bug renaming files in explorer
by Guest mvl_groups_user@yahoo.com- 2 replies

I have this annoying bug when I work quickly. If I click on a file in windows explorer, within a few seconds the name will become editable to be renamed. However, if I do a ctrl-home (to move the cursor to the beginning of the file name) before the file name becomes editable, windows moves to the first file in the window and then makes that first file editable for renaming (not the file I intended to rename). Is this a previouly reported issue? Has it been fixed in Vista? -MVL
