get rid of adobe acrobat reader?
by Guest Puff- 6 replies

Hi, I don't know if this is the right place for this question or not, but I have a problem with updating acrobat reader on an XP machine. When it tried to update, the previous version apparently was incompletely removed and the new version won't install - complains that the previous version needs to be uninstalled first, but it won't finish off the old version. How can I wipe out whatever's left of the old installation? I've even tried going back to a previous time when everything was working to do it and that fails also.

XP PRO, Outlook Express and PPS files.
by Guest AT and HMB- 2 replies

I have never been able to open PPS files in OE. Yet when I save these files I can open without any problems using windows explorer. Attempting to open in OE gives message: "This file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action. Create an association in the folder options control panel". The Tools, Folder Options and File Types is correctly set for PPS files files to be opened by the Powerpoint reader. Hence there is no problem with Explorer. Help please.

shared printers
by Guest Bob- 2 replies

I have a wireless home network with XP. I told my printers to be shared. I go to one of my PCs and try to add a printer, it sees it, but wants an .inf file locally from that PC. If I've never attached that printer to that PC it doesn't have any of that printer's drivers & files, etc. Why don't I have a choice of getting the files off the internet? Am I supposed to put in the printer's install CD? What if the printer I am sharing didn't come with an install CD? Thanks Bob

Add Another Machine To Users/Groups Locations

I have 2 machines networked using a router. When sharing, how can I add my 2nd machine as a Location when adding users (setting permissions) from my 1st machine. The only way my 2nd machine can see stuff on my 1st machine is if I add as "Everyone". I'd rather use machine\user specific. Thanks.

Hi, Sorry. I didn't know where I should post this message. Therefore I tried it here. This problem is regarding to win 2003 firewall as following: I have turned on firewall in windows 2003 and allow exception. The exception include file and printer sharing, msdtc.exe , port 1433, port 2008, remote desktop, sqlserver.exe, sqlbrowser.exe and snmp.exe . Now when I try to open the mapped drive to folder in the win2003 server, it failed and I tried to make connection using ODBC to this server and it failed as well. But when I turned the firewall off, both works. Can anyone please help? Thanks.

Question about ntbackup
by Guest Roman Serbski- 2 replies

Hi list- I have a question regarding ntbackup functionality in Windows XP. I configured ntbackup to run during user logs in into domain. It copies the content of My Documents, Desktop and Outlook folders on a shared drive. My problem is - the backup file just keeps growing although I selected differential backup. Let's say the total size of user documents is 3GB. I select differential backup so it runs full backup the first time, but after couple of days the bkf file is already ~10GB and keeps growing. I think it runs full backup every time. I thought this was because of pst files so I excluded Outlook folder but it didn't help. Could you please share…

Re: Shortcut not working correctly Here is what may be a similar issue. When I hit any of the letters asdfjkl;\ on my keyboard I immediatley get the characters \;lkjfdsa appear as a result AND the windows search dialog box opens. Hi, ~ I run two computer labs with 30 Windows-XP based computers in a learning center and I need to make sure that users who need to listen to music, podcasts or want to watch videos (which include their soundtracks) can only do so using ear buds or headphones, otherwise these labs will be hellish and other students wouldn't be able to do any work ~ All computers have planar flat screens with in-built speakers and I have noticed that some of the computers do not play sound through their speakers (the ones on the screen), but can do so through the standard headphone output ~ How can I make all other computers behave the same? ~ Any other howto's about h…

Hi There, Is it possible to do a windows repair from the hard drive? When I try to do it with disk I can't find all of the files required, even doing searches etc. I just wondered if I copy i386 to the hard drive and change the register to look there and not at the CDrom whether that would help. Anybody got any thoughts please? Thanks Buster

clearing "open with" recommended program list
by Guest clovelly- 1 reply

If I choose an document (e.g. foobar.pdf) which is associated with acrobat. I want to open it with an editor (e.g. verypdf.exe). If verypdf.exe is not in the recommended programs, I can choose other programs. If it is not in other programs I can choose to browse to Program Files and add that program to the list, then associated it within the recommended program list. However, if I later find that verypdf.exe is not the right program, how do I remove it from the recommended program list when I select "open with" from a right click.

OT :FYI yahoo messenger
by Guest sgopus- 2 replies

Just thought I'd let people know. I used to have ZA free version and yahoo messenger never seemed to be all that bothersome, I switched to Kas internet security (which has it's own firewall) and discovered messenger was attempting to send and receive info at the oddest times, I would leave my pc for hours messenger was silent, I attempt to open excel, and suddenly KAS firewall alerts me that messenger wants access to the internet at a port it's not used before. of course I block it, it's happened many times, with other programs, messenger appears to be sending out info on what I do with my pc, quicken is a good one, I use that to keep my finances planned …

Filename labels dissappear for thumbnail view after control-click
by Guest Range Rat- 1 reply

OK, this one you don't see everyday. When I control-clicked a folder that happened to be in thumbnail view, it opened without filename labels. It must have corrupted the registry somewhere because I get them back if I rename the offending folder, and labels are lost again when I return the folder name back. Bug, feature, or oddity of the night? Have I offended the XP gods? Jon
