Ok i have encounterd some really odd problems with Media Player 11 in XP. First i have to find a DVD codec in which I did. Now i don't understand why because Nero & Ultra Edition 7 has a built in DVD codec and all of a sudden a few days ago media player is saying i have no codec even though i do, but that's not the big issue. Now that i have the codec the DVD player plays fine in media player but now the chapter menus are grayed out. I have tried diff codecs and diff cd's and everything and it's still grayed out why?

Using regedit to speed up computer startup time?
by Guest monty1945@lycos.com- 5 replies

I've seen some videos about this on youtube. On one, the suggestion is to go to startup delay and change the value from 480,000 to 40,000 (decimal). Another suggests going to menu show delay and changing it to zero. Can both be done or just one? And if only one, which is faster? Thanks.

Hello, I am using Windows XP Home edition and am fairly new to it. 1. I had internet connection problems. 2. During troubleshooting I removed downloads like Mozilla Firefox that my son had added. Come to find out my connection had nothing to do with his stuff. I could open my email links fine before my internet problems, however once I got my internet back due to replacing filters I could not open my email url links anymore. 3. My email and server provider said it was something in my system not their email settings. 4. I use outlook express. 5. Emailing MP3's
by Guest Bob Davis- 17 replies

I emailed an MP3 file to a person recently and it was received as a TMP file. I tried sending other files to him and all were received with filenames like ATT177.TMP, ATT178.TMP, etc. When he changes the extension to MP3 the file plays normally. How is the filename being changed and what is the source of this change, the sending or receiving computer? I'm sending via Outlook 2000 and he also has Outlook 2000.

How do I restrict usage on an XP machine

I need to create an image for some PC's that will only run 1 particular program. The onboard network interface will be disabled. The only other function (aside from running this program) will be the ability to print to a locally attached printer. I would prefer not to use the Group Policy editor if possible. There should be no user login required and access to all the other (except printing) Windows modules need to be unavailable. Access to safe mode should likewise be disabled. There will need to be an administrator ID however for maintenance. Any suggestions?

Help!!! My Fax Console Program is not working
by Guest uroy- 1 reply

I can't figure it out for the life of me. I was sending faxes just fine yesterday. Today...nothing. I click on the icon to open Windows Fax Console. Usually, after a few seconds, all the faxes sent, received, etc. are shown Now at the very bottom of the Fax Console screen is says "Refreshing" and nothing is listed. Then after five minutes or so at the very bottom of the Fax Console screen it now says "all fax printers are inaccessible" My printer is working fine. My modem is fine. The phone line is ok beacuse I am able to connect to the internet. What does all fax printers are inaccessible mean. I am in real trouble here.

XP service pack2 reinstall
by Guest Brian- 2 replies

Hi - Is it possible to reinstall XP (Prof) SP2? I have run sfc and it wants my XP disk to be inserted. However, the CD on the laptop isn't working and the sfc will not read from a USB external CD drive. There seems to be many files that it wants to replace/repair so I am wondering if reinstalling SP2 would do the trick. Any advice on this would be much appreciated. Thanks, Brian.

System Restore not workingq
by Guest magash- 3 replies

Every time that I try to use system restore it always tells me that my computer cannot be restored to such-and-such a date. I am working on a Dell PC with MS Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005. I have searched for answers and help, but have found nothing. I am also having hard time re-installing my printer. I've tried a number of times to install a Dell AIO 924. The setup wizard goes through its steps, then just quits. My printer doesn't even show up in the control panel. I have also tried to have windows look for it, but it doesn't find it. It is plugged in.

Intermittent booting problem
by Guest Brian Vaughan- 4 replies

For several weeks, every few reboots of my computer, Windows halts booting, with an error message, including the following: "Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt: \Windows\System32\Config\system" This error will not go away until I reboot from the Windows installation CD and use the recovery console. However, even if I do nothing but simply exit from the recovery console, Windows and all my applications will operate normally, and I can usually reboot a few times before I get the error again. Several web searches, including on this forum, lead me to this article: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/307545 I thought t…

Slow Startup, Missing Recovery Partition, and hal.dll error

I am helping my sister with her computer, so i do not know the history of it. It is a laptop with Windows XP Home on it. She complained that it was taking a long time to boot and that it was running really slow. When I first looked at it, it would take about 10 - 15 minutes to boot to windows. It would take a while on the screen that shows the progress bar at the bottom and then it would take a while on the screen that says Windows XP. I tried booting into safe mode to see if that was any faster. It wasn't. It took just as long. During one of the boots, it locked up or I assume it did because it didn't load for over an hour. I hard reset it. This time…
