"NET NOT RECOGNIZED AS A COMMAND" et al
by Guest bill@love.ranch- 2 replies

I got this issue and error when trying to execute a NET STOP command to fix the update not working issue. "NET NOT RECOGNIZED AS A COMMAND" OK so I know what the problem is - the PATH isn't working. I have verified that, BUT the PATH variable appears correct and I re-entered it. I was able to type the long path command and it works C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\NET STOP .... If I type %systemroot% I get back C:\WINDOWS not recognized as a command. So the system knows what %systemroot% is the first item in PATH=%systemroot%\system32;......... NET.EXE is in system32 BUT typing NET STOP at the command prompt gets me the error. Even if I open the cmd prompt…

Mouse issues with focus and clicks...
by Guest demiurge- 3 replies

Okay - I am on an XP SP2 system with a Logitech Cordless TrackMan FX with the latest drivers. Behavior A: sometimes (not always, and I don't know why yet) I click (regular left-click) and am ignored. I click again, and am "heard". Almost as if I need to click once to gain focus. Behavior B: other times, left-clicking doesn't work at al, no matter how many times I tryl. My system seems "deaf" to the clicks, UNTIL I hit alt+tab once. Then the system reverts to Behavior A. I hope I expressed this clearly. Any ideas, O smart folk? Thanks for reading this. D

by Guest leegold58- 3 replies

One thing I notice about XP is that the hard drive is continually working - not hard, but it never stops. lsass.exe svchost.exe explorer.exe even when I'm doing nothing. win2000 was not this "busy". Is this normal? Can I turn it down?

need disks?
by Guest cambridge- 6 replies

I have a new laptop and am about to donate my old desktop to charity. I want to wipe out the disk securely and am aware that there are utilities out there to do this but I want to retain the XP operating system if possible. If this is not possible I would like to supply the original XP Professional CDs so it can be restored. Here's the problem: I can't locate these disks. What can I do? Can I wipe the drive while sparing the operating system? Recreate installation disks from the PC?

XP service pack2 reinstall
by Guest Brian- 1 reply

Hi - Is it possible to reinstall XP (Prof) SP2? I have run sfc and it wants my XP disk to be inserted. However, the CD on the laptop isn't working and the sfc will not read from a USB external CD drive. There seems to be many files that it wants to replace/repair so I am wondering if reinstalling SP2 would do the trick. Any advice on this would be much appreciated. Thanks, Brian.

MyDocs on second HDD drag and drop only copies, won't move
by Guest Austin- 5 replies

The normal behavior while dragging from desktop to mydocs folder is to move. However, with my mydocs on a second HDD, the behavior has switched to copy. Now when I want to move something from my desktop to mydocs, I first have to drag and drop into the mydocs folder on my desktop, then I have to delete the original from my desktop. Usually I check my mydocs folder to make sure the copy went well before deleting the original. This is three steps instead of one. Is there any way to change this back to to the default behavior (i.e., move)?

RunOnce and the Exclamation Mark (!) prefix - does it work?
by Guest Shepherd.Travis@gmail.com- 0 replies

In making our application Vista compatible, we are moving our setup registry keys from HKCU\..\Run to HKCU\..\RunOnce so that they are launched after a reboot. Previously we placed these keys under HKCU\.. \Run, and upon successful completion, we removed the registry key. We did this to ensure that a failed attempt would launch again after a reboot. However, in Windows Vista this is a problem since removing a registry key requires admin rights. I found an MSDN article that talks about placing an exclamation point (!) before the value name of the RunOnce entry. Supposedly doing this will postpone the automatic deletion of the key until after the command exe…

by Guest Masterx81- 0 replies

Hi to all... I've a speed trouble with ntbackup... When i test the drive with the hp l&tt utility, i record a tranfer rate of 30mb/s with compression 2:1, but when i use ntbackup i not get more than ~3mb/s, and the tape stops often. The lto is connected at the same bus of a lvd/se dds-4, the dat is connected at 40mb/s, and the lto is connected at 80mb/s. (reported by the scsi bios scan). I use a 29160 scsi HBA. I have the dds set with the 'term_power' jumper, and there is the terminator at the end of the ribbon cable (certified for scsi 160 lvd/ se).. I've tryed all driver configurations (with both windows drivers and hp/ adaptec dirvers, with no results)…
