Upgrading Install to SP2?
by Guest Cyber_Bruno- 2 replies

Hi there, I was recently told that it was possible to upgrade an installation disc for Windows to contain SP2 on it for any future uses. As I'm currently in possession of a disc that contains XP from shortly after it's release, this would be great for when I format my hard drive in a few weeks. This mostly stems from not wanting to have my hard drive only be partially recognized and then having to partition the remaining space after upgradating Windows. Any clarification and possible how-to? Thanks.

I'm using Excel 2003 and have put two files Book.xlt and Sheet.xlt in the startup folder whose path is specified in: Tools|Options|General|At startup open all files in: Sheet.xlt works fine for adding new sheets and Book.xlt works fine for new workbooks created by clicking the New icon on the Standard toolbar, but not if I create it using File|New then select Blank Workbook from the New Workbook task pane or if I click Templates|On My Computer then select Workbook. How do I have these actions use the Book.xlt and Sheet.xlt files that I've created for the purpose? JF.

I have Windows XP Home edition SP2. The computer(Sony PCV-RZ22G) has 6 US2.0 ports (2 in front and 4 in back) I was getting the following message when I connect a HI-SPEED USB device to my USB port. (External HDD) "HI-SPEED USB Device Attached To non-HI-SPEED Hub" Based on General USB troubleshooting in Windows XP info in the MS support site, I uninstalled the USB controller and tried to reinstall it. The reinstallation failed and I can see a yellow warning sign on the USB Controller in the device manager. The installation process comes up with a message "Cannot Install this Hardware" The driver insallation file is missing a necessary entry. This may be …

Why does windows throttle upload bandwidth?
by Guest John Orion- 3 replies

I am having a problem when transferring files with Windows XP SP2. I run an http server on my windows box and when someone tries to download a file they get a speed of 30-60KB/s. This is ridiculous! I set up an http server on my Linux box and when someone downloads from that box they get 215+KB/s. What is wrong with Windows? Is this some sort of block to make people buy their even worse product Vista? I am really annoyed. I can't seem to find any information on this issue. I have disabled my firewall and antivirus to make sure they weren't effecting the speed and as I figured... they weren't. It rests all on Windows XP. Has anyone figured out how to…

Cant Disable Read-Only status on Folders
by Guest GreenBoy- 7 replies

Hi I have a problem that a PHP script i am running is trying to write session data to a folder under 'C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator \Local Settings\Temp\php\session' but i am getting an error saying that permission to the folder is denied. I have seen many posts where people say that a folders permission status doesnt matter it just the files in it, but there are no files in it and the script is trying to write a session file to the folder - therefore the Read-Only status matters. Can any one help please. I am running WinXP PRO, SP2 with all latest patches. Thanks GreenBoy

Hi, I have windows XP SP2, Intel 1.86 GhZ, 1.5 GB memory (and almost 10 GB of free space in C:) Im facing a strange problem with my corporate laptop for the past 4/5 months. When ever I try to do a "Save as" from PDF, any of the MS Office XP application, Notepad etc, and try to choose desktop location from the Save as dialog box then my laptop takes a long time to respond (as much as even 1 or 2 minutes or more) I have deleted all my temporary files, cookies etc and still see no increase in response time. PS2 keyboard will not bring computer out of standby.
by Guest michaeld- 0 replies

I have a USB mouse and PC/2 keyboard. when I place my computer into standby the mouse will bring it out of standby but the keyboard will NOT. The keyboard properties has the box checked "to allow the device to bring the computer out of standby" and also so does the BIOS. This use to work but then stopped working the other day. I have not changed anything I am aware of. To see if the keyboard property settings was stuck, I unchecked the box mentioned above, rebooted, then checked the box and rebooted but still it does not work. Is there a possible section in the registry I can check or any other ideas

disk cleanup & fragmentation
by Guest brothersamati- 13 replies

Don't know what made me run disk cleanup. Before, my disk was beautifully unfragmented, with its 25% of space mainly in one block and hardly any fragmented files. After cleanup the disk was in about 1000 pieces and about 50% of my files were fragmented. Defrag reduced that to only about 30-40 times what I'd started with, but after repeated attempts at defragging I still have about 300 stripes. Chkdsk/f found some errors but I can't see what it did about them because the message flashes and disappears before I can read it.

Problem Downloading Binaries
by Guest wassup.doc- 5 replies

Until now I have no problem downloading binaries from Newsgroups to ordinary CD's. Now that I would like to use the extra storage capacity of either DVD's or message sticks, I get the following response: "Windows encountered a problem when trying to copy this file. What do you want Windows to do? Retry Cancel? What have I done or not done, and how can I correct this. BTW, I can *still* copy these same files to ordinary CD's. Many thanks, Bamboozled David.

How does a program "run itself" at windows startup?
by Guest Chris- 13 replies

I have a utility program installed. When windows starts up, I get a message from my firewall that "<program> is trying to access the internet". Ok, I know what it is trying to do and why (update its data), and I know it's not anything dubious and I can easily block it, but just HOW does it do this? It is not installed as a service. It is not listed in my startup folder. It does not appear in the registry under any of the Run, RunOnce, RunOnceEx or RunServices keys even under an alias (all entries are accounted for). It does not appear in Services section of WindowsXP Admin tools. So just how does it "run itself" at windows startup? Chris.
