missing security tab on network shares and local folders
by Guest JBeckett [MCSA]- 0 replies

I'm missing the security tab when I open the properties of local folders and on network shares. However, the problem seems to be limited to my computer and my user account. I have taken the advice to take off 'Simple File Sharing' under the 'Tools'->'View' tab of Windows explorer. I have also verified that I have an ntfs formatted disk. I was looking through Group Policy to see if that was the culprit but I couldn't find a setting that would prevent me from viewing the security tab. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

XP Classic Start Menu
by Guest Simon- 2 replies

I run XP SP2 and IE7. I much prefer the classic start menu but would like to change the order in which items are listed in the centre portion which includes Run, Settings, Search, Programs. Unfortunately it is not possible to drag items within this centre portion. Specifically the change I want (for ease of mouse navigation) is to place Search above Settings (currently it is immediately below). Can someone supply the Registry settings, please?

When View of Page Faults is selected in Task Manager Processes, I am seeing 2 page faults per second for explorer.exe and at this moment, 4000 per second for iexplorer.exe. This is true whether using default page file or none. Am wondering if anything is wrong or can be done about this anomaly?

All permissions, access... DENIED???
by Guest John- 6 replies

Hi All, I am running Windows XP Home Edition Service Pack 2. I was recently messing about with some program. I forgot the name, as I have being putting up with this problem for 1 month already. Now, whenever I do something "ACCESS DENIED". I have all permissions, but once again "ACCESS DENIED". If I start the PC Tools Firewall Plus service, which I really need to get running, "ACCESS DENIED". Create a new user account and try that one, you guessed it, "ACCESS DENIED!!!". I have all permissions, no spyware or viruses, all critical updates, but nothing will ever work. I have tried taking ownership of the entire "C" drive. Still, I have that stu…

Windows XP Home Edition Reinstall problems
by Guest RicRob- 24 replies
I'm trying to reinstall Windows XP Home Edition and am running into problems. The computer has SP2 installed, but the CD is older than that so it won't reinstall from the CD. I followed the instructions in Microsoft KB article 900871 to integrate the SP2 files into the Windows XP installation folder. This seemed to work OK. However, when I ran the upgrade from the installation folder, I received numerous (94) file copy error messages. These were for all kinds of files (.dll, .icm, .reg, .asp, .htm, .ocx, .mar, .inf, .exe & .sys). I kept telling it to continue anyway. Then when it restarted as part of the upgrade process, after the restart I get an …

I want to put (resp. wrap) a directory into a CD image. The compressability of the directory files is high and I want to compress all the stuff as much as possible. Which format should I choose: IMG or ISO ? Are there tools which allow a higher compression (without creating a *.zip or *.rar or *.7z archive) ? Frank

Network timeout problem
by Guest Ray Dawson- 0 replies
Hi, My nice stable Windows XP setup has thrown a wobbly for the last couple of weeks and I haven't been able to find out why. I am connected to the internet via an adsl router - as are two other computers running XP. This computer has started to disconnect from the network connection every few hours for no apparent reason. The other computers don't do this - which means no router or internet problem. All three computers are running IE7. With this computer, if I haven't connected recently, when I try and open a web page, IE tells me that I am not on line and I have to click the Connect button for it to do so. My email client does likewise. I haven't know…

accessing files form crashed bootdisc
by Guest Bram- 2 replies
my bootdisc with windows and worst my personal documents, email etc crashed. to be able to transfer files i mounted it as an extra HDD via USB to my 2nd PC. I couldnt look under the my documents/user name files due to protection built in Windows. So i thought i'd work around it by creating a user account om the 2nd pc with the same login name and pass as my 1st pc. But no show. then i tried file transfer. But of course, this only works with special migration files like the csv export file needed to import your old address book for instance. So no solution there. The only thing i can do is get passed my documents/my user name and see all files, but i cant …
