Repost from archives: Vista - XP cpu usage comparison A survey in December by US IT services company Softchoice claimed that Vista will be the most power-hungry Windows desktop so far. The report claimed that at Windows XP's launch, for example, the minimum CPU requirements were 75 percent greater than those for the operating system it replaced, Windows 2000. Vista's minimum CPU requirements are 243 percent larger than that of XP. http://www.zdnet.com.au/news/software/soa/Microsoft_goes_on_green_Vista_offensive/0,130061733,339274460,00.htm

More backpedaling.from MS... why? because everyone just simply wants an OS that works.. and that is XP, not the Fiasco called Vista! --- http://keznews.com/3501_Microsoft_To_Extend_Windows_XP_Deadline_For_OEMs Microsoft will announce later today that it will give OEMs six additional months to sell PCs with Windows XP installed, CRN has learned. Microsoft is extending the deadline for sales of new direct OEM PCs with Windows XP installed from January 31, 2008 to June 30, 2008, according to sources close to the company. "The named accounts, the ones that have volume, have complained about the end of life for XP, and that's because adoption of Windows Vista h…

I have been unable to download any file from any website. I receive a message on IE7 that Internet Explorer was not able to open this internet site . The requested site is either unavailable or cannot be found. It hangs on Firefox. The latest was after installing Windows defender, I received this error message after it was checking for updates: Error found: Code 0x80240022. I couldn't find this error message on Microsoft's website. I am using Windows XP SP2. I have checked my internet settings and downloading is enabled in tools. I have also reset the settings, but that didn't work either. I did run %systemroot%\Windowsupdate.log file and think I see probl…

watching TV with XP Home
by Guest redneckjazzer- 6 replies

Hi; almost 3 years ago this question was posted: "Please, is there any possibility to watch TV (using my TV Tuner card, signal from cable) in Windows XP Home Edition. For example some way how to watch TV in Windows Media Player 10. I don't want to use paid software from third parties." I am faced with the same question except that I am using WMP11 and I have not yet purchased a TV tuner card. Is there anything in the windows family of programs (for XP Home) that plays/records TV? If not, any recommendations for software/hardware would be GREATLY appreciated!! Thanks! P.S. - my TV signal will be coming from at satelite dish's receiver box, so I don't r…

Migrating data from Mac to Windows XP Laptop
by Guest Robert McN- 1 reply

At home I have a new (4 months old) MacBook laptop with OS X on it. For work, I have just gotten an IBM/Lenovo ThinkPad T60 running with Windows XP. The data on my Mac is mostly migrated from an older IBM laptop, so they should be Windows compatible. I'd like to migrate all my data files from my Mac to my new XP laptop. Can anyone tell me the best (or better still, *easiest*) way to migrate data from a Mac to a Windows XP laptop? Thanks for any advice you can give.

Reinstallation Questions

I am in the process of rebuilding two Dell PCs with XP. The restore disks are SP1, and updating takes forever. Machine number one is complete. Machine number two is identical in every detail. Is there any reason that I should not image the drive on machine one and restore it to machine two (realizing that I have to then change the machine name on machine two?) Both machines are fully licensed.

Desktop question

Hi, As I understand the desktop of XP which I see on my computer will include files and shortcuts from both all users and my desktop folders on file system. But if I create file on my visual desktop, it will be added to all users desktop and not the the specific user desktop, I cannot see the user desktop at all on computer desktop. The problem is is only for that user, for other users it work fine. If I create or copy file by explorer to the user desktop I cannot see it on computer desktop at all. Any idea Regards Roni

Unstable Wireless Connection
by Guest Serhan Ogan- 6 replies

Hi, my wireless modem is 20 feet away, there are no obstacles or digital interference (that I know of) in the way. My laptop (Toshiba A-10 Satellite) is running almost 24/7. Everyday at least once, my connection drops. Annoying...., anyway, XP locates my modem and network,(Signal strenght: Excellent, means nothing when you can not ride that signal) and lists it among other wireless networks it picks. It tries to connect automaticaly and sometime does. Usually I have to click CONNECT and after 6-7 trials get it to work again. Laptop connects to the best network immediately, anywhere else. (Meant to be mobile or what?) The computer does indeed connect to a …

XP SP2 doesn't recognize my Ethernet card
by Guest Alberto- 5 replies

I am trying to resurrect an old computer - AMD K6 3D with 512 Mb using XP Pro SP2. The computer has a 3COM 3C509b Ethernet card in it. When I first start the computer there is no internet or network connectivity. I check the device list and there is a yellow exclamation mark, so I uninstall the device, then run New Hardware Wizard and it connects and works. Any idea why it won't connect upon startup? The POST shows that the BIOS sees the card but XP does not. I have tried to get the latest drivers from 3COM, but their site says that SP2 should include the latest drivers for this NIC.

Slow boot/IE7
by Guest mosesyellowhorse- 4 replies

IE7 SP2 Not a huge problem but irritating. My PC takes a long time to boot, perhaps up to 2 minutes but it eventually gets there. Then, to bring up IE7, it takes another similar period of time. Once booted and into the 'net all is OK, I can switch between them without a delay but if my PC goes into standby it awakens OK but both the wakeup and IE7 again takes this long period of time to arise. This has become this way within the last two or three weeks and I have deleted and reinstalled IE7, SP2, my cable modem and the Cox broadband application, went through msconfig to the best of my limited ability without success. Can anyone give me more pointers an…
