COM port not behaving...
by Guest Erik- 0 replies

Hi all. (I had posted this message in the Hardware group earlier; but I see more activity here so I hope it's OK to put it here too, to increase my chances of finding a solution.) I seem to have a stubborn serial port. I just got a new motherboard, with one onboard serial port, and also have a PCI expansion card with two serial ports. After I installed the drivers for the expansion card I got an error message regarding COM1 (the onboard port). I blamed it on a silly driver conflict, forgot to write the exact error message down, rebooted the PC, and everything was fine. Or so I thought... Yesterday, when I started one of my programs that use all…

Just recently, I went from 20 gig of space to 10gigs of space. I used Easy Cleaner to check where my file hogs were, but there still seems to be a missing 10 gigs of space. I went into the temp files and deleted them, but no such luck recovering. Is there a freeware program out there to ferret out these hidden files? Also, I don';t think it is a virus because the computer in question is rarely connected to the internet and after successive bootings (not connected to the internet), the Gigabytes are still AWOL. Any ideas? My files are not hidden in the folder view but I still can't find it. Thanks

Assuming there is still ink in the printer cartridge and the cartridge "head" is clean, why would a cartridge stop functioning properly?

Twp Win XP Pro's
by Guest GrayGhost- 2 replies

I had WinXP Pro crash on me (don't ask me why), so I reinstalled it and since I had the opportunity I used PowerQuest PartitionMagic to breakdown my C: Drive into C: & D:, but in the process of doing that I lost power to the system (again, don't ask me why). I thought no big deal I'll just reinstall WinXP Pro again. I was totally successful in doing it, successful in splitting my drive into 2, and got all my programs loaded just fine. However, whenever I do a power off/on reboot of my system I get a start up screen as if I had 2 operating systems, the only difference is I don't! But I get two choices of "Microsoft Windows XP Professional". The fir…

I have this question but 2 answers. Can someone clarify this for me, please? What is the best way to do a clean, complete uninstall of a program in windows xp? (I need to remove a logitech mouse program because it interferes with a kensington trackball program I need to install). Here are my 2 answers: --Just go to ADD/REMOVE programs and uninstall and that's it (easy!) -- you must use windows uninstall program or equivalent (is this some sort of wizard of something? Thanks! Can I reload WinXP Pro without wiping out other stuff on the disk?
by Guest b_hansen- 3 replies

I seem to have been hit by a virus, which has messed up some parts of the operating system. I've been told that reloading the operating system (Win XP Pro) is a good idea. But if I do, will it mess up other things on the disk, such as my MS Office settings, Explorer cookies and history, etc.?

My computer was running well with 1.1GB extra hard drive space. Because MS kept saying that I needed to upgrade to SP2, I went ahead, not expecting that my computer would not be able to operate well and that I would only have 12mb of disk space left after a successful installation. When I try to remove SP2, the uninstall program says that I need at least 300 and some mb of disk space to uninstall. I can't afford to replace the programs I bought with my used computer and don't have the disks to reinstall them. Is there some way to remove SP2 or did it just ruin a nice laptop? -- Thanks, Larry

Revive XP on new motherboard
by Guest curmud- 3 replies

I have a Sony vaio which recently died due to motherboard failure. I replaced it with a new motherboard and processor, plugged in the drive and accessories but XP won't come up either from the HD or the recovery disk. I assume this is because the system is no longer recognized as a vaio and Microsoft thinks I am trying to steal a copy of windows. Of course this is a bought and paid for copy which came with the original machine. Is there any way to make this work?
