Registration files/delayed write error
by Guest Carl Davey- 7 replies

I was having problems with any kind of software not installing (got error message) and got 'Delayed Write Failed' (disabling 2nd hardrive on PC fixed problem). So I system reset to factory settings. The PC worked fine for a few weeks then software wouldn't install again (games already installed also crashed or went slow) and then found on net changing Windows registration files e.g. from 'C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Administrative Tools' to 'C:\%USERPROFILE%\Start Menu\Programs\Administrative Tools' fixed the problem (have to change the registration files once a week to %USERPROFILE% as they keep changing back). The PC has wo…

CMS Backup Rescue CD?
by Guest Adam Leinss- 2 replies

I'm having issues with a 160GB SATA CMS Automatic Backup System we just purchased. The idea is to send this unit with a Dell D630 laptop to a remote sales person so they can backup their laptop. The software itself is very slick: just connect the drive to the laptop and it starts backing up. However, the rescue CD portion doesn't seem to work very hot. It appears to be based on a linux distribution. It drops you to a command prompt where you are suppose to type "image" and then it will figure out which is the source and target drives for the data transfer. The problem is that it only detects the external SATA drive in the USB enclosure, but not t…

Restore previous versions feature for XP?
by Guest jminiman- 7 replies
I love Vista, but on one of my laptops, the Aero effects are just too much - I need a lighter OS and I'm reformatting with XP SP2. However, I absolutely love the "Restore Previous Versions" feature. I use it several times a week. Yes I know - everyone should be backing up their system on a regular basis. I would *really* like to see this feature somehow in XP. I know Windows Server 2003 has this built-in for local files. But I don't want to run such a large OS on my laptop. Are there any tools out there that closely emulate "Restore previous versions" aka Volume Shadow Copy for local files, in Windows XP? I would like it to only keep track of file delta…

Here is the deal, yesterday my computer was attacked by a trojan horse type virus, with low risk. symantic gave me steps to remove the virus, and now i am locke out of my computer, all it does is reboot in safe mode and tell me the security log is full. Everything I have tried has failed and even as the adminstrator I can not gain access to my computer. Here is what symantic had me do: 1. Disable syslem restore 2. update virus definition 3. reboot in safe mode( here is where they messed me up by having me run msconfig, then goto the system configuration utility, and then I clicked SAFEBOOT) This is as far as I got, for when I restarted I was locked ou…

I have used the Windows XP SP 2 CD to perform the gathering of files on a laptop. When I go to the new computer (that i installed XP SP 2 on from the CD that I used to collect the files on the old computer) it gives me an error saying "Your migration store was created with a previous version of Files and Settings Transfer Wizard." I was just seeing if anyone has seen this before, other than when you go from x32 to x64 bit systems??

Can't get microphone to work!?!
by Guest David D- 4 replies
I have never used my microphone on my ASUS P5P800SE, and tried it today and found that although I can hear fine out the speakers, after using two different microphones, I cannot record sound. I tried to go to SoundMax's website to update their product, but couldn't find it. So I went to ASUS and updated the newest driver for the soundmax, but I already have 5.0 and the update was for 5.0. So any ideas? I have tried pluggin the microphone into the three different inputs, but nothing works. Also went into Recording properties and switched it to MIC and then tried all the same things with LINE IN. Nothing.

XP Pro running, cannot open EBAY auctions, help me
by Guest Chopah- 6 replies
I have current XP pro running with current IE-7 also running. I can surf everywhere, even in EBAY, however I cannot open the last link, the actual auctions. I installed Firefox and exactly the same problem occurs. :-( If I wait several minutes (5 or more) the auction page will sometimes open. I can't blame IE because FF does the same thing. My wife's computer is on the same DLS Gateway and her machine opens them instantly. It has Win 2000 & IE-6. Help me, I need to spend my last dollars on EBAY items. Chopah

Problem with wireless connection
by Guest rsegoly- 3 replies

Hello, I have XP desktop connected to wireless network with Linksys USB adapter, its been working fine for long time. Recently the connection does not work any more The symptom is that the wireless connection on my network will disable itself and when I try to enable, it will claim it failed connecting to the device. I installed the wireless adapter on another machine works fine. I removed the drivers and reinstalled, same problem. I tried all USB ports on the desktop, same problem. So it leaves only the Windows as the prime suspect. What drivers on Windows do I need to reinstall or what other solutions are recommended? Roni

Fuzzy Icons in Taskbar
by Guest TallTom- 3 replies
I reinstalled Windows XP Home Edition today along with Service Pack 2. It picked the default graphics card fine (NVidia GEForce 2 MX400) correctly. But then I found a Hardware Update through the Windows Update center online. I downloaded and installed it. I completely messed up the graphics. I was able to "roll back" the graphics card driver and everything was reset EXCEPT the Taskbar icons on the bottom of the display. They are now fuzzy. I have tried deleting the driver (NVidia) and reinstalling. I've tried changing the DPI setting between 96 and 120. Neither have worked to restore these icons to their normal clear (higher res) appearance before…

It can be previewed just want activate at the elapsed time set. Any ideas. I have tried everything I can think of. Regards Ed Walke
