by Guest Eric- 5 replies

Does anyone have any suggestions on how to install XP with USB keyboard and mouse? In the middle of installation process, it requests for continuing installation with USB devices even thought XP has difficulty to recognize them, then USB keyboard and mouse are not function at this stage, and XP cannot finish the rest of installation process without confirmation. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to skip this kind of questions during the installation? Thanks in advance for any suggestions Eric

Help with downgrading to XP
by Guest RyanH- 3 replies
Hi I bought a new Computer a few weeks ago and Vista has been giving me all kinds of problems so I finally decided to downgrade back to XP but am having problems. I know how to boot from the Install CD and it detects my C drive I choose to install and things seem to go smoothly but every once in a while certain files cannot be copied (Usually .xml extensions). After the first part of install it has to restart. After it does a screen appears but then I get a message saying that certain files were not installed and setup cannot continue. Does anyone know what might be wrong?

Unnecessary applications
by Guest SeanKav- 1 reply

I'm trying to figure out whether users need all Office applications. Is there anyway to ascertain when the last time an application has been run? Other than in the Add/remove programs (Last used on), which doesn't seem to be accurate, is there any application that can do this? Thanks

Network adapter forgets shutdown state
by Guest Keith- 0 replies

I'm on a campaign to minimize my laptop. I have a few utilities, and a few batch files set up so that I can readily switch the state of a few services and adapters on my laptop, depending on what I need to do. For example, I regularly use VMware, but not all the time. So, my VMware services are set to manual, and my batch program does a few 'net start' commands to turn on the services I need to run VMware. A couple of the VMware resources (and I don't use that word in any sort of XP-esque sense), are the two network adapters that VMware requires. I have installed the Microsoft devcon utility so that I can turn on and off a network adapter from a command-lin…

Paint color boxes corrupted or shrunk?
by Guest Sinecure_Bob- 0 replies

Paint and the Paint color dialogue thing is basic to several graphic and website programs I use. I need to use the Define Custom Color part of it and set values for Red-Green-Blue. For some reason the boxes for this have 'shrunk' so they only take two digits. For example, if I select the Basic Red then the Custom Color top box shows 25 and about half of the last 5 so it knows it is 255. If I want to change this to 254 then I can't as just 2 numbers are accepted. Same issue on Green, Blue and the left Hue, Sat: Lum: boxes How do I get the size of these boxes back to take 3 digits. I am Win XP 2nd and fully updated. -- Thank You

Safe Mode Freezes
by Guest Len (Baldock)- 2 replies

Hi Can start with F8 and partially get into Safe Mode. I can select the Administrator, or other user names, but then just get the header and footer telling me I am in safe mode but no desktop picture or icons appear and the Start button does not produce any response. The HDD talks for a while with flashing lights but after 2 minutes that stops and then waiting upwards of 10 minutes still does not produce. There is a very quick (1 sec) message about being in Safe Mode with a Y/N question but selecting either still produces no response. Tried several times all with no result the only way out is to use Cntr Alt Del and telling the PC to shut down. Has anybod…

Card reader question

I have an integral 7-in-1 card reader. Until recently, when I inserted a card, a window opened which gave me several choices: Open in folder, Open in Picasa etc. In the last few days, this has changed. The window opens, but is empty. What controls this and can it be corrected? Regards and thanks in advance Pat Macguire

Spyware Removers FYI
by Guest Rick- 2 replies

Just finished reading an article in PCWorld ( Oct. pp 101-108) about spyware removers. The old "standbys" Ad-Ware and SpyBot Search and Destroy as well as Windows Defender did not show themselves to be very good. I ran all three one after the other and they indicated no problems, then I ran PC Tools Spyware Doctor and it found 6 files, one being a Trojan. I would recommend the PC Tools product too. -- Rick Fargo, ND N 46°53'251" W 096°48'279" Remember the USS Liberty http://www.ussliberty.org/ http://picasaweb.google.com/PaWalleye/NebraskaBirds http://www.flickr.com/photos/52529828@N00/

windows xp x64 and memory upgrade
by Guest rabidfoxcontrol@hotmail.com- 3 replies
- 85 views
I was running 1 gig using 2 pairs of 256Mb matched modules in 4 slots and replaced the first pair with a matched pair of 1 gig modules which gave a total of 2.5 gig. Windoes XP x64 edition boots fine in safe mode but not in standard mode. I went through the boot from CD repair process (past the recover console option) but no change. Is there a boot.ini setting or other update required to enable Windows Xp x64 edition to run after a memory upgrade?
