Windows Firewall falsely reports being off
by Guest Nil- 6 replies
Several times an hour, the little warning balloon pops up to tell me that Windows Firewall is off... but it's not. It's fully enabled. How can I get it to stop lying to me? I think this computer (not mine) may have had Norton's firewall installed on it at one time, but now that's gone. I have a suspicion that might have something to do with it.

Can't remove software....
by Guest LMO- 7 replies

Aloha all. I have Dell XPS 410. It came with a default sound system (SigmaTel, which stinks). I bought a new sound card, but am unable to remove the old drivers for the SigmaTel. I keep getting errors saying that the software cannot be removed. There is also no soundcard seen in the Device Manager, so I am unable to remove it, thus I cannot get the new sound card to run. Any ideas on how to completely remove all traces of the old sound card and software? Thanks!

Newsgroup Postings Dates
by Guest ColTom2- 9 replies

Hi: What causes all postings not to be in chronological sequence without skips in dates? I have my Read Options applicable News set to get 300 headers at a time and I do not get anywhere near that number when I click on a subscribed Newsgroup. When I view windowsxp.basics it starts with today's date and stops at 9/19/2007 and then begins again at 9/9/2007 and ends with 7/26/2007. I have never been able to figure out how to get as many postings as I want and they all be listed correctly by date without skipping dates etc. Hopefully somebody can clue me in on what to do to resolve this problem. Thanks

Can't get two monitors to work properly
by Guest Erwin- 2 replies
I've been using an external monitor with my laptop through a docking station for a couple of years. I recently bought a new monitor and it is connected but I seemed to have clicked on the wrong button while trying to balance the "Display Settings" between the two monitors. Only one monitor now shows desktop icons, the start bar and any programs. The other monitor only has a blank desktop background. They were both working fine until I started my "tweaks". I can toggle between the two monitors using my graphics card options but only the monitor designated as #1 shows the proper desktop and programs. TIA for any help. -- Erwin

by Guest BoazBoaz- 2 replies

Some picture on my PC are signed as "system file". If I try to delete them I get the message: ============================================ The file 'some_name' is a system file. If you remove it, your computer or one of your programs may no longer work correctly. Are you sure you want to move it to the Recycle bin? ============================================ Lots of these files are simply CD covers pictures. How can I set the file to become regular files (None "system file") ??

Hi, This xpcom seems to prevent my computer from shutting down because it is not responding. Don't know what it is but Wikipedia says it is Cross Platform Component Object Model from Mozilla. I did go to the Mozilla XPCOM site and its making me spin with tech stuff. Anyone here can explain what's happening (in layman terms) and how to work around. Thanks Sonny

Video Card Upgrade
by Guest RyanH- 3 replies

Wondering if any of the new video card codecs would improve the one I have now. I noticed that the picture quality is somewhat lower then it was before I reinstalled XP. Acordding to the Device Manager I currently have a NVIDIA GE Force 6150 SE installed. I'm pretty sure there was a different one when I had Vista installed. SO are there any updates or better ones I could install on XP?

Weird write issues
by Guest Mark G.- 2 replies

Just reinstalled windows on a new drive with a fresh upgraded PC. Anyhow, with certain trusted executable files, I get a space limitation or write privilege error and am not able to proceed. You can see the error here: http://www.mlmoments.com/misc/issue.jpg My account does have administrative privileges and I have even logged in as the administrator, but still the same thing. What causes this and how do I fix it? Oh, I also tried running these processes without my firewall or anti-virus, but get the same results.

Stop cached folders off line
by Guest koysys- 0 replies

I have redirected the My documents folder of all my laptop clients (XP SP2) to a share on 2003 Server. These folders are set up to be available offline. When my laptop users leave the office for longer than a day, the cached copy of the My documents folder disappears. They then cannot see any data. They do connect to the office network over a normal VPN and the folder does try to sync but gets cancelled or fails due to the link. When they get back the office, it syncs up again fine. Does anyone know why the cached copy would disappear? Does it have anything to do with a failed synchronisation attempt? Also, can anyone tell me a recommended setting fo…
