Passive FTP
by Guest Birreboi- 7 replies

Hi, Im trying to use an online 'game' - Entropia Universe. it relies on using ftp, but I cannot logon to it, with the message passive ftp failed. Using xp pro, my system meets their requirements. I use Zone Alarm Pro, to which I have opened ports 20 and 21, but still no good. Closing ZA and having Win firewall running, same. Having NO firewall running, I still cannot connect to this game! So it would seem xp is somehow blocking use of passive ftp. Any ideas please? TIA, peter

group policy to prohibit registry changes?
by Guest Jason- 1 reply

I'm trying to solve a file-sharing problem. A suggested fix requires a change to the LANMAN parameters registry entries. Neither regedit nor regedt32 will let me add a new value ("error renaming New..."). I can change other registry entries, but not these. I suspect a Group Policy is behind this, but I cannot find what it might be. Any suggestions? Thanks Jason -- reverse my name in email address

hardware problem

I have set aside my old computer while working up a new one. Now that the new one is smooth, I decided to move my old one upstairs and add a pci wireless card(old 400mhz desktop we're talking about here) Installing the pci wireless card was difficult, space constraints, etc. Long story short, I had to remove my graphics pci card from the slot next door. (its a taller card and easier to install) So, the graphics card came out, the wireless went in next door slot and reinstalled the graphics card. So far, so good. I was anxious to see what I had and this was my undoing. I hooked up everything but the monitor power cord and the keyboard. Then I plugg…

by Guest Howard- 3 replies

Hello. I have a 3 yr old Toshiba laptop, whose hard drive crashed. It has (had?) a valid official copy of Windows XP Professional on it. My question is -- if I get a new, blank disk drive, can I somehow re-install Windows XP without having to buy a new copy all over again? Thank you.

Thanks in advance.

I know this question has been asked before and I reviewed all the other responses but I cant seem to get my pc back to normal. I had a motherboard replaced... when I get my pc back all the default fonts for ie, excel, etc are now italicized. I have verified that it is the arial font that was affected. How do I get it back?

NTFS not maintaining "last access time" correctly
by Guest Geoff C- 2 replies

NTFS not maintaining "last access time" correctly Operating system: Windows XP Pro (Version 5.1.2600, Service Pack 2, Build 2600). Expected behaviour: According to the system documentation (eg: Fsutil behavior - disablelastaccess parameter), NTFS maintains "last access time" (LAT) values of files as follows: <quote> Each file and folder on an NTFS volume contains an attribute called Last Access Time. This attribute defines when the file or folder was last accessed, such as when a user lists folders, adds files to a folder, reads a file, or makes changes to a file. The most up-to-date Last Access Time is stored in memory and is eventually wri…

Today my keypad on my keyboard started working as arrows and pagedown/up instead of doing numbers like it is supposed to. Is there a way to switch it back to number mode? I've tried everything I know to do but haven't come up with anything...thanks!

Send to Mail Recipient missing from menu
by Guest mattj_1234@yahoo.com- 4 replies

I have an XP SP2 machine that is missing the send to-mail recipient option in the context menu. This is only on one profile on the machine, all other profiles function normally. When this began, I found that the Send To folder in the docs and settings folder of the affected profile was missing, so I copied the Send To folder from one of the other functioning profiles, but that did nothing. I deleted the mail recipient.mapimail file and recreated it, but that didn't work either. I also unregistered and registered sendmail.dll, with no effect either. Now I'm stumped. Any ideas? TIA

Windows XP Freezes when going into Safe Mode
by Guest Len (Baldock)- 3 replies

Hi My friends computer has a nasty little virus (Download Trojan) which requires running NIS 2006 in Safe Mode to clear out. When starting with F8 and getting into Safe Mode I can select the Administrator but at that point I get the header and footer telling me I am in safe mode but no desktop and icons appear and the Start button does not produce any response. The HDD talks for a while with flashing lights but after 2 minutes that stops and then waiting upwards of 10 minutes still does not produce. There is a very quick (1 sec) message about being in Safe Mode with a Y/N question but selecting either still produces no response. Tried several times all w…

uninstalling microsoft office 2000 SR-1 professional without the c
by Guest BoxCarFive- 7 replies

Hi, My original Office 2000 cd is corrupt and am therefore unable to uninstall the program. I tried a method suggested here but was not only unsuccessful, it has caused all sorts of problems with my PC's operation particualrly with Outlook Express spell checker and running Registry Mechanic . Whenever I run these programs the Windows Installer screen comes up and continues to try to uninstall Office 2000. It becomes a vicious circle and only clicking "Cancel" repeatedly will stop it. So, I thought I needed to take drastic measures and format my hard drive and reinstall XP Pro. However, I can't do that either!! Having fromatted lots of hard drives …

Re: Synchronizing Clock

Re: Synchronizing Clock Had the same problem with time synch and also with AVG. Found a solution which may help others who are frustrated by this annoying issue: Change the time server to tick.usno.navy.mil Worked instantly for me. To make the change permanent, edit the registry: Start - Run - Regedit hkey_local_machine/software/microsoft/windows/current version/datetime/servers Replace time.windows.com with tick.usno.navy.mil Try synchronizing clock again after making this change.
