"Windows stalls on cold boot"
by Guest buggs73- 13 replies

I've been troubleshooting a problem of Windows stalling out on a cold boot. It will get to the splash screen and seem to initiate the kernel and NT Loader ok, check the boot devices ok, then stall out. Occasionally, it will try to proceed, the perform a memory dump. On a warm boot, it works fine. I've repositioned all PCI cards to different slots, but no difference. All drivers indicate working properly. starting Windows Installer Serv under msconfig?
by Guest s_m_b- 5 replies

I'm making my way through http://support.microsoft.com/kb/824643 due to issues with .NET 1.1 installation, and have come to the point of doing a clean boot (Manually remove and then reinstall the .NET Framework 1.1, point 6) Here's the problem: 'When you use Msconfig.exe in diagnostic mode, reenable the Windows Installer Service on the Services tab.' But, when I do this, it tells me that either 'Plug and Play' or another service is unavailable. Anyone know which basic services need to run to get this going?

Clarification on WinXP Home Edition Upgrade to Pro options
by Guest gravyface- 6 replies

From what I've read -- including posts by several MS MVPs -- only the Windows XP Pro Retail or Upgrade can upgrade from Home Edition to Pro. However, I just put in an OEM XP Pro CD in my Home Edition laptop and after autoplay launched, I was presented with an option to "Upgrade (Recommended)". I did not follow through (it's not for this machine) but it seems to me that what I've read is wrong: OEM *can* do upgrades, not just clean installs.

automatic updates
by Guest Stephen- 4 replies
Firstly, is it possible to set up automatic updates (for Windows XP and/or application software) to be effective only when a particular user logs on? This would mean that other members of my family would not be bothered by pop-up requests that they find difficult to deal with. Secondly, all of these things want to check for (and download) updates as soon as you turn on the computer, which is annoying if you turn it on in a hurry to do something. Is it possible to make automatic updates wait, say until the computer has been on for a set time, before kicking in? Thanks, Stephen

Error Message - Unsure What It Means
by Guest tkbirdie- 3 replies

I am having trouble accessing some programs on my computer. I keep getting the following error message "Windows cannot access the specified device, path or file. You may not have the appropriate permissions to access the item". I do not know what it means or how to fix it. Any help would be appreciated. My computer was infected with viruses, but that has now been sorted out. I did a repair of Windows XP Home and have been having the problems since.

QSignoff Access Denied
by Guest Jim Haynie- 0 replies

I have a folder on many PC's located here... \\do010201\c$\Documents and Settings\Default User\Local Settings\Application Data\PCHealth\ErrorRep\qsignoff. Permissions is QSignoff has Administrator and System with full control. Nobody else is listed. So any user with a roaming profile will get access denied on the copy. I can fix this for each PC by inheriting the permissions from above. However, how do I fix this on a global scale and prevent it from happening? Thanks, Jim -- Jim Haynie Wakefield Public Schools
