Cancelling Backup results in Delayed Write Failure
by Guest Jim Guerino- 1 reply

After cancelling NTBackup I start getting Delayed Write Failures on future backups. Performing massive write activity other than backup does NOT produce Delayed Write Failures. Restoring the system to before the backup was cancelled eliminates the Delayed Write Failures thrown by backup. Anyone seen this? Is there a fix for it? Do not try it unless you have a way to rollback your system.. WinXP Pro SP2 all mtce except IE7 - NTBackup - WD Raptors

Disable default accounts or don't require user accounts...
by Guest refurbmike- 10 replies

We're trying to limit our liability and security holes by restricting the computers to only one account. At default, Windows requires one account in addition to the default Administrator account. We'd like to have one or the other - since we're plugging these computers into a domain, multiple local accounts on a computer are wasted loopholes. Is there a way to disable one or the other? Preferably the user accounts.

If I RIP a CD I get a folder with the tracks on it. Beside that I get its JPEG IMAGE files (CD front/back picture) but they are difined as SYSTEM/HIDDEN files. Why ?? Is there a way to RIP these files as normal files (not SYSTEM/HIDDEN files) as defult ?? I do not want to set my PC to see all system files. I indeed want to keep the real system files hidden. Thank you.

XP Backup In Unattended Mode Does Not Run
by Guest Chingadero- 3 replies

I am using an XP Pro workstation to backup a network shared folder. It works fine if I initiate the backup manually and it also works unattended if I remain logged on with the workstation locked. I set my password in the Backup Utility Scheduler area but it keeps re-requesting my password every time. I suspect that the problem is related to a policy on our server but I don't know what that policy could be and our local techs have no clue. The biggest problem is that our PC techs do not know much about the server software and the server team does not answer service calls for desktop systems, (typical government nonsense!) They tried to tell me that XP backu…

Trouble installing USB printer
by Guest Crazy Mama- 5 replies

Hi I hope someone can help, I've got a new HP Deskjet 460c printer which I have tried installing with no luck (it says Data is invalid after trying to detect hardware). Everything goes fine until it tries to detect the hardware from the USB port. I contacted HP and they talked me through manually installing it through the control panel. However when we got to the bit to choose a port there were no USB ports configured. Should I have USB ports configured? If so how can I get them configured? We've tried installing it on another computer and it works fine so it isn't a problem with the printer. Many thanks, Crazy Mama

Environment Variables Disappear!
by Guest BM- 2 replies

Hello! here is a description of my problem... I've never seen this and didnt find ony solution for this! I have one user in my office that uses a laptop and sometimes when using EXCEL she gets the message that Autorecover can not save because the path \\server\AllUsers\%username%\OfficeRecovery isnt available. So, this Autorecover path is assigned by Group Policy by the domain and works fine for all other users. After a little research I noticed that the user's Environment Variable USERNAME is simply missing! When I run the SET command it doesn't appear. And the command Echo %username% just returns %username% again! The weird thing is that if I restart the…

Extremely Slow Boot
by Guest a- 4 replies

I have an HP desktop that's about 2 years old (P4-2.99Ghz). It have 1.5 gb of memory. The problem is that it boots EXTREMELY slowly even in SAFE mode. Once it's running it performs OK. I've run AV and anti-spyware on the box as well as System Mechanic and CCLEANER to clean the registry. I have also defragmented the hard drive. Is it possible that this is a hardware issue? memory? motherboard? HDD? If it could be hardware what's the best way to diagnosis the problem?

I can't see the address bar in my file browser
by Guest PenguinMan98- 1 reply

I go into the 'view'->'Toolbars' and click on the address bar to show it and the word 'Address' shows up on the right side of the browsing control bar but there is no address bar that I can see. If I use the resize feature to shrink the window down, eventually I can get it to show just a little bit of it when it wraps to the next bar down. This is just enough for me to paste a location into. How can I get the address bar to show across the top like in an internet browser? (and like all previous versions of Windows)

Trouble with XP CD Writer
by Guest JamesG- 0 replies
The embedded CD Writing Wizard in my Windows XP Home has worked fine until now. Currently when I try to back-up files to a CD, the XP Writing Wizard keeps telling me "there was an error in the writing process. Disc may no longer be usable." This is incorrect, because I can write to the same disc by using my Nero program. The XP Writing Wizard is more convenient to use than Nero. Is there anyway I can make it work as it should? Thanks much. -- JamesG

OUTLOOK 2003, Windows XP and STANDBY problem
by Guest Dilson- 1 reply
Dear All, I am facing a strange problem on one of my friends laptop. The laptop fails to go on standby after OUTLOOK 2003 has been executed (doing a send & receive). After a cold boot as long OUTLOOK is not started, the system can go on STANDBY and back. But once OUTLOOK has been started and then quit, the system just stays with the desktop showing, no matter how log you leave the system ON. It does not go onto STANDBY anymore. Has anyone come across this problem? Please suggest what is the best way to resolve this issue.

Can WindowsXP turn off a monitor completely?
by Guest Richard- 18 replies

I know that my PC can make my PC go into a standby condition. What I mean is that the indicator light go from green, to orange. But, what is hapenning is that after a short while my monitor turns off completely. I mean, the monitor state indicator light goes completely out, it does not just go to orange from green. Can WindowsXP be causing this? This morning I put the monitor on without turning on the PC. Naturally, the monitor indicator went from orange to green because of no signal. Then I put the PC on and the monitor state went to green. But, after a short time, the monitor was turned off. And I mean turned off, not just "in the orange state". TIA.
