missing hal.dll -- recurrence after repair
by Guest JClark- 5 replies
Hello, OEM windows XP Pro, SP2 An old Intel PIII computer has been working OK, but quit booting with the "missing or corrupt \system32\hal.dll" error message. I repaired the installation with the windows XP CD. It worked for two weeks but now has the same problem. Is this likely a "general hardware failure" (one of the causes listed on the MS support site)? Or should I try again with a repair? Also, if I replace the MB and processor but leave the same hard drives in, can I still install the OEM windows XP Pro I bought for the original machine on the new system? I seem to remember somewhere that OEM win XP is only good for installation in a single compute…

Windows SteadyState Problems
by Guest Wesley Thomas, Library IT- 3 replies

I decided to give Windows SteadyState a go on one of the public computers at the library I work for. Initially, I'd installed it without reading much on it, and decided to take it off. I had yet to activate drive protection. I had a few minor post-uninstall problems that were remedied by deleting the user account and creating another. I tried it again some time after that which lead to more serious problems. Now, even with the program off my drive, both the Windows Security Center and Automatic Updates are acting bizarrely. Automatic Update won't come on at all! Every option in the area in which Automatic Updates are turned on is grayed out. The service…

I used to be able to get the full date and time in the tray when I dragged up the tray to double or triple height. But for a while now it only shows the time and month. I put this question to a microsoft ng (don't remember which one) and was pointed to a reg file that was supposed to fix it, but it didn't work. Any one have other ideas about fixing this problem?

Make browse library of all icons on system?
by Guest spamlet- 2 replies

Is there a way to search for all the icon files (of whatever extension) on my pc and assemble them in one place so that I can pick suitable ones without having to use the various browse for dialogues that come with programmes that themselves don't have access to all the icons on the pc? For example: browsing for a suitable icon for a folder, today, I came across an icon of a tree, that I had not seen before but could previously have done with for a Google Earth placemark icon, that I ended up having to make myself. Today's tree icon was supposedly in System32, but I'm b'd if I can find it when outside the choose folder icon dialogue. Thus, I'd like to b…

Thumbnail View
by Guest William R. Walsh- 1 reply

Hello all... I have several folders that contain digital pictures. What I'd like to do is use Thumbnail View to display the pictures in each folder. Where Windows 2000 Professional SP4 would remember this setting, Windows XP Professional SP2 doesn't appear to do so. I've looked at the settings pertaining to folder view settings, and the option to remember each folder's view settings is turned on. Folders open in new windows instead of re-using the previous window. (I just don't care to browse my files as though they were web pages...) How can I get Thumbnail View to stay turned on? William

Hello, I'm just replaced a HDD in my 4yr/o gateway laptop, and am attempting to re-install XP Pro via the CD. Setup runs great until I get to an early step- Partitioning the HDD?! It shows there are 475000MB available, but won't let me create a partition, or just [enter] and move along. I'd appreciate any pointers! Thanks!

by Guest dunnpy@gmail.com- 4 replies

Guys, I wonder if anyone can assist with this: XP with 2 DVD/Writer drives. Insert a CD into drive, open contents - OK Remove CD, My Computer recognises the CD has been removed and returns the icon to normal Insert a different CD and open - contents from the previous CD are displayed. This occurs on both drives in the system. I've tried: Microsoft Autorun fix - No fix Removed drives and IDE controllers and let Windows redetect - no fix Checked BIOS settings and restored defaults - no fix The system isn't running anything unusual, I've even disabled all but the necessary (Windows) items from running - no fix Safe Mode - Everything works as ex…

Hello, I've got an issue where my screenshots won't paste into paint but will into Word. However, it's all black with a faint outline of items on the screen. See the linked image below. http://img504.imageshack.us/img504/7281/ After a reboot, it will work for a while, then it reverts to what I've described above. Any suggestions? Thanks, Craig
