Cannot Log off win xp after installing ie 7
by Guest eric- 3 replies

I have several users sharing a patch updated xp sp2 pc that worked fine until I installed ie 7. After that it frequently, but not every time will not let users log off or shut down including the administrator. The screen flashes, but nothing happens and you can continue to use applications as if you never clicked the log off button. I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling ie 7, searching through ms knowledge base to no avail. I am not running norton antivirus. I tried looking at the event viewer, but did not see anything obvious. I have also tried ending all the non system processes listed in task mgr except explorer one at a time to isolate a pos…

Leave message to another user using the same computer?
by Guest deostroll- 7 replies

I have a computer with windows xp professional edition installed in it. There are two or more people who use the system, but I am the administrator however. Is there a way by which I can leave a message for another user who uses the same system? That person has to get the message once he/she logs into his/her profile? I am thinking of a simple message box which would contain my message and the username of the sender. If there is such a feature can the person (who is not an administrator) send me messages in the same manner? --deostroll

Possible ACPI recognition problem/Restart freezes
by Guest Brightbelt- 1 reply

Hi, I've installed XP Pro on an Intel Mac, but this problem exists in Windows too I believe. I'm having problemas doing restarts - XP freezes every time. I know that with my SP1 disk, there can be recognition issues with the ACPI in the Bios during installation. There are ways you can steer the installation to fix it but I wasn't able to figure it out, so XP is already installed. Is there a way to fix this issue at post-install? One would think Microsoft would have an update for this. I've managed thru sheer will to get SP2 downloaded and installed. But my restarts still freeze at the point where it says "Windows XP is starting up...." I really w…

XP Pro won't boot, safemode won't help, recovery console doesn't h

Hi all, I have a desperate problem with my XP Professional system not booting. Background info: Win XP Pro installed on a 300GB SATA drive, file system is NTFS. When trying to boot it gets to the standard Windows logo and after ~20 secs it flashes up a BSOD (for well under a second so I can't read it) and restarts. I've tried all the various options accessed via the F8 key plus all the safe mode options. In safe mode it gets to loading mup.sys and then restarts (I am informed that this doesn't mean that mup.sys is the problem). I tried to do a repair install but that option wasn't there (only a complete new install, which AFAIK would wipe the drive…

by Guest RJK- 3 replies

Hi, I've got SP2 for offline install, can anyone tell me how old it is, (to save me rummaging at MS for hours ! ?) (5.5.1005.0 (SRV03_QFE.031113-0918) ..i.e. have there been any significant additions to it since this version was released. .....and does it include "everything that went before" ? i.e. can I install it into a XP Home OEM PC that, say, has never had a service pack stuffed into it, or one that has had an older sp2 stuffed into it ? That is to say, I would like to stuff SP2 into a PC that has an email worm in it, (after cleaning it up of course). It's one of those heavenly PC's apparantly, where the user only uses it for email / surfin…

Rebooting when internet not in use
by Guest ggrothendieck- 0 replies

I have a wireless router/modem and PCs connected wirelessly to it. Sometimes it gets into a non-working state but turning the router/modem off and on again fixes it. I would like to do this once a day without having to go to other floors to find out if anyone is using it at the moment. How can I determine if the internet is in use? If anyone else is using it at the moment I would wait for a while and try again later.

I recently upgraded from Win 2000 Pro to XP Pro. Now when I want to access my Hotmail account, I check the option titled "Save email address and password?" and enter the info, but the password does not stay. I end upo having to type it back in every time. This feature worked with Explorer 6, but not with Explorer 7 and XP. What gives?? Also, in Explorer 7, I get a lot of web pages with VERY SLOW scrolling. Never had that in Explorer 6. Are there fixes for these problems??

WinXP don't boot because C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM is corrupted
by Guest Juan I. Cahis- 11 replies

Dear friends: During a normal boot procedure, I received the following message: "WinXP don't boot because C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM is corrupted". I solved the problem, because I use ERUNT daily, so I booted to the recovery console and used ERUNT to restore the Registry. But I have two questions: 1) Why this problem did happen? 2) Which is the methodology recommended by Microsoft to survive in that event, for the majority of users that they don't use ERUNT? Please note that selecting the "last good configuration" did the same error message, which is a logical consequence if you have a corrupted Registry. Thanks Juan I. Cahis Santiago d…

When trying to install a program with Russian data, the dialog boxes that came up during the install process from XP had garbled characters. The program when installed displays correct Cyrilic characters. Another program installed yesterday can not display the symbol for degrees of temperature. What setting do I have wrong in XP?
