Write Caching vs. Safe Removal
by Guest Janetb- 3 replies

At Device Manager>Disk Drives>[R-click on particular disk drive]>Policies Tab, we can choose between Optimize-for-Quick-Removal or Optimize-for-Performance. I would normally use the Safely Remove Hardware Icon, so, on the on hand, I might as well take advantage of the Optimize for Performance option. But suppose a drive NOT optimized for quick removal inadvertantly becomes unplugged, or if there is a power blackout---what bad things can happen? Can I be in danger of losing all the data on the drive? And how much of performance improvement does the Optimize for Performance option afford? Not clear on the disadvantages (possible consequences) of eac…

I have 2 computers and both need to use RDC to talk to remote server. My workstation is a member of my home domain and my notebook which I just did a clean install of xp pro is not a member of a domain. 1) If I edit the connection from the workstation I get a window with 6 tabs and a field to enter the target computer (IP address). It also has a checkbox saying "Always ask for credentials" which is unchecked. above that is a link to edit or delete the credential. I click the link to edit and I can enter the user name and password and save it. now every time I click on this connection.rdp file I connect to the server with out having to enter any cr…

I run my PC on XP Pro SP2 and use the email address bigron2006@gmail.com as an alternate email address to cut down on spam, etc.in my real life email Recently it has somehow become corrupted and displays everything in a strange, Cyrillic type language (except the email messages, which are in English) I tried reinstalling Gmail to no avail, and I cannot find a language selector. I have also checked my settings in Regional Languages (Control Panel) Your help would be much appreciated. RonaldThomas Gosnells West Australia 17 July 2007

Direct X conflict?
by Guest Sue- 10 replies

I have been wracking my brain trying to figure out what is preventing my backup software from being able to write to my DVD drive. Right after I installed some software, the DVD was made inaccessible. Today I realized that the only new thing still on my system is Direct X. Is there a known conflict and if so, what is the fix? Thanks! Sue

format hard drive
by Guest lrh381b2- 7 replies

My hard drive (with a messed up XP on it) is labeled G: for some reason. I am trying to format it and label it the C: drive. Then I plan to do a clean install of XP Pro. I tried to format it using Vista on my other hard drive, but it won't allow it because it is "active". I also tried to format it using MS-DOS 6.22, but MS-DOS won't recongnize G: as a hard drive so it won't format it. If I boot from the XP Pro CD, will it give me an option to format the drive and change drive letters? Thanks.

XP Recovery Console
by Guest idw20782- 2 replies

I was trying to install XP on my C drive. Apparently, I loaded it on the E drive instead. I didn't realize it until today when I tried to retrieve a document. Is there any way to fix the partition and get the data back? Will Windows XP Recovery Console get the files back? P.S. How do I find the "number of the appropriate Windows installation?"

boot disk (CD)... not pertaining to setup/install
by Guest Jason Sands- 1 reply

Somehow my NTLDR got hosed and I am trying to boot with a CD. I remember getting it to correctly work before but now cannot get it to work. I followed the instructions at http://support.microsoft.com/kb/305595 on how to make the floppy. I used WinImage to create boot.ima. I fired up Nero and made a CD-ROM boot disk, choosing the above .ima. I used expert settings, the first CD I used no emulation and the second disk I used 1.44 emulation. Neither one will boot. I have the following files on my floppy when I image it: boot.ini ntldr ntdetect.com I have added an additional line in the boot.ini so I will be able to see the menu if and when the CD boots.

screen backgrounds unselectable after virus removal
by Guest abrtlt@yahoo.com- 3 replies

After having removed a virus, I am unable to select the screen background. The background files are present in the Screen Properties list but greyed out. The .bmp files do exist on the disk, but I can only select a background color. This does seem to be linked to the specific user as upon login/logout the custom background I had formerly does appear for a few seconds before the Windows login/logout screen. Is there a way to restore background selection? I presume it is linked in the registry with the specific user profile. Thanks! Andrew

Can I install Vista along side XP as a dual boot system? I have a dual core 64bit cpu. Will I have to get the vista drivers for all my hardware or will Vista have these already for me? I'm planning on buying a second sata hard disk to install Vista. Just hope this is gonna be not to much trouble. Any advice much appreciated.

Fresh install, Windows not updating much less working...
by Guest Chopjai- 0 replies

My computer was getting bogged down with misc. files so I decided to do my periodioc respawn of my computer, I have an Alienware ALX system an opted for that option. I first use my windows CD to reformat each of my drives. I have 3 HD's, 2 which are set in RAID striped. I then carry out my respawn. At this point the computer runs fine. I then go to windows update to start the wonderful 80 or so updates that require an install. However, I am unable to install update KB922582, among others, after running a custume install. Automatic updates program will freeze and never complete the install, I am unable to cancel this operation as well. Attempts to access an…

Re installing Windows My documents
by Guest Terry- 0 replies

I have a computer that has 3 users. I saved the documents folders to another drive and reformatted the boot drive. When I installed a fresh copy of Windows I made the 3 users during the initial install. One of the first things I did when I signed on was to copy the backup files to C:\Documents and Settings Something strange happened. The first time I logged on to the other two names the my documents folder was duplicated. It was like Windows ignored the fact that the folder already existed and made another new one. It gave it a .pam extension because that was what I used for the main username. So what I have is one folder called Pamela and one called …
