ALL Programs are now **.lnk
by Guest Kevin T. Mahoney- 0 replies

After downloads, and "FREE Scan" Trials of several Anti-Virus/Anti-spy/Anti-Malware vendors, my PC started freezing, and siezing, and locking up badly. I Uninstalled ALL traces(I hope) of the trial-packs' programs. Now, ALL of my programs end in *.lnk [ even on the Start button listings ], everything is sluggish-at-best, and I'm receiving frequent "Runtime Errors", MSIMN.exe errors, and "Unexplained Error" forced program terminations. I've run the MS Full Protection/Clean/Tune-up Scans, and was told that my PC has NO problems, even though the 3rd-party scans say I'm terribly infested and need to purchase their FULL packages. -- KTM, Saco, ME

Don't want "Open With" window when opening .wav files
by Guest Dan McGarigle- 5 replies
When I open a .wav file I get a window titled "Open With" and it presents "Recommended Programs:" that has a list of four (4) programs - ATI Multimedia Center - Cool Edit 2000 - iTunes - Windows Media Player and I have to choose one of them to open a .wav file. But I want .wav files to always be opened only by Cool Edit 2000. How to I stop the "Open With" window from appearing so that only Cool Edit 2000 will always be started to open a .wav file ? Thanks ! Can't get past safe mode
by Guest Steve T- 5 replies

Gateway XP SP-2 started having boot problems. No new hardware and only new software was latest Windows Update in July. I was able to boot using "last known good configuration" but no more. And "Start Windows normally" does not work. Monitor just stays at black Windows XP and does not advance to "Starting Windows" blue screen. I went to Device Manager in Safe Mode and there are no yellow question marks. System Restore is turned off, don't know why; and cannot enable unless I start Windows normally; which I cannot. I have ERUNT software but going back 10 days and restoring that registry configuration does not help The PC does not have a 3.5" floppy drive …

"open with" menu problem - THE CURE
by Guest Uncle Grumpy- 3 replies
A month or so ago, I mentioned that I was having a problem with the right-click "open with" menu only listing 3 items and no more - regardless of the type of file I was trying to open - just white space where the additional choices should have been listed. No fix could be found, tho' a couple of MVPs tried valiantly to help. Well, quite by accident I found the fix. I recently went into the registry and deleted all the crap Winzip and a host of other programs had added to that menu - VOILA!!! That menu now works as it should.

Files still in C:\RECYCLER that were deleted from Recycle Bin
by Guest BlastOButter42- 5 replies
I was defragging my hard drive and I noticed that some of the files that it couldn't move were in C:\RECYCLER. Turns out it's two humongous video files I thought I'd deleted a long time ago, but were still lingering there along with a bunch of other stuff. I can't get to the folder in Windows Explorer, and I tried the method at http://support.microsoft.com/kb/229041 but it didn't work (I'm not sure if I have the right original directory for that). This is taking up nearly 3GB. Is there some way to delete them?

Xp, Win2K and Vista - any problems
by Guest Alan T- 2 replies

My computer has booting problem recently but not sure is that related to what I did recently: - I have 2 SATA harddisk in internal mobile rack, 3rd SATA disk not in mobile rack. - 1st harddisk SATA with Win2K and Xp dual boot in C: and D: respectively. - then swap the 1st and 2nd harddisk - install Vista on 2nd harddisk So that I can boot into XP/Win2K or Vista by swapping the 2 harddisk ideally. Now I got a problem, most of the time the BIOS does not boot up, always give me non system disk failure.

Is there a way to choose which devices get which drive letters? My Smartmedia cardreader was unplugged when I installed a new external hard drive for backup, and the new HD took the G:/ which I am used to having as the cardreader drive. How can I make the card reader G:/ and the new ext hard drive I:/ (I already have another external hard drive H:/ for all my personal data). -- Thanks for the help! Janet
