"NTLDR is compressed..." Need help
by Guest Yichuan Dong- 3 replies

Hello, My computer is a Compaq Presario. I do not know the model number, however, because I cannot boot up my computer. When I get to the OS choices menu, a message saying, "NTLDR Compressed Press Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart." Before this happened, I used the compaq recovery console in an attempt to fix a seriously damaged copy of Windows XP Home Edition; System Restore wouldn't work. When I do get into the boot menu by pressing F10 (for recovery), it replaces Home with a non-functional Windows XP Pro. Also, I don't have the Windows XP CD. Could this have been a virus? I can't format the hard drive, either. Please help. I have years of work that has not been backed-up. Thank…

Share custom paper sizes over network?
by Guest Darwin- 7 replies

We have a client in the field of civil engineering and they have demands for custom paper sizes for when they print/plot their documents. When we create custom paper sizes on a PC, they are only available on that PC. Is it possible to create custom paper sizes and have them available to all users on the network without having to visit each PC and create them manually?

Problem starting XP
by Guest Rhysy- 3 replies

I'm having a problem starting the computer. It gets to the "Microsoft Windows" screen, with the green loading bar, but then it just goes black. Strangely the mouse pointer is visible and responds, as does the keyboard, but the usual blue login screen does not appear. I've tried waiting several minutes but nothing happens. Rebooting doesn't help. Ctrl+alt+delete does nothing. I've tried clicking around randomly incase the login screen is somehow active but not visible, but nothing happens. I can't try starting in Safe Mode because the last time we took the machine in to be repaired, a password appears to have been placed on the boot menu and I don't know…

i have been working with nero techs on a problem- they sent me a tool to gather logs to send them [it called 'get support files' ]- when i try to execute that program i get an xp error msg--"....restricted by administrator policy...." MS site has no info on this msg---i can down load other things and execute them-- by the way my original problem is that nero recode goes through all the moves and then stops on a recode task telling me that "the parameter is incorrect--out of memory"- drives me crazy--i have good hardware-all are up to date- im no expert but have enough knowledge to troubleshoot most things --but this..... jthank you

Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMPT) service missing
by Guest KCav- 7 replies

Trying to connect a notebook computer to LAN. I looked through Services and did not find Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMPT) service. Since this service is for transporting mail across the network it seems it should be running. I ran Add/Remove software routine to load it onto the notebook and it is still missing from the list of available services. Is there a configuration setting needed? -- KC

Syncing laptop and network
by Guest Steve Freides- 0 replies

If I am working on Autocad files, I have to be careful about how I move things or my drawing will lose the ability to find the other drawings on which it depends. I also have been known to mess up a file I've taken home from the network, therefore I am looking for a good way to do the following: 1. Take a folder from my network which has drawing and sub-folders in it - copy that folder to my local drive on the laptop to work on it over the weekend. This works OK now - copying an entire folder seems to preserve the relationship between files, so I keep all the needed drawings in sub-folders of the main folder for each project I'm working on. 2. On M…

XP/Outlook2003 Problem: Deselect Name in 'Other Calendars' does not work properly (keeps 'Selected Items'-font)

XP/Outlook2003 Problem: Deselect Name in 'Other Calendars' does not work properly (keeps 'Selected Items'-font) Hi, and first of all, sorry for the excessive crosspost - but I think although the issue only seems like an Outlook problem, it might have something to do with the Display -> Appearance Settings in XP. The following thing happens within my Outlook (and is quite annoying): Calendar -> 'Other Calendars' pane. Select a calendar by clicking on a name or the checkbox -> the calendar is displayed correctly. Deselect the calendar by clicking the name or the checkbox again -> the calendar is not displayed anymore. But now, also the name is not…

Xcopy help please
by Guest Jack Gillis- 3 replies

I have an old fashioned batch file I use very often under XP to do a backup of My Documents to a USB Flash Drive. It contains, among other things, this statement and works just fine and has so for years. xcopy "d:\My Documents\*.*" "U:\My Documents\" /D /Y /s I have added many MP3 files to My Music and there is not room for them on the USB Drive. Have tried to use the /EXCLUDE parameter tacked on to the end of the statement but cannot get it to work. I keep getting 'parse' error or 'Cannot find the files I a trying to exclude. Will someone help me exclude My Documents\My Music from the copying, please? Thank you.

Question about DLL search directories
by Guest void.no.spam.com@gmail.com- 4 replies
- 267 views
In recent versions of Windows, the following order is used to search for a DLL that an application wants to load: 1) the directory from which the application loaded 2) the system directory 3) the 16-bit system directory 4) the Windows directory 5) the current directory 6) the directories that are listed in the PATH environment variable Prior to Windows XP SP2, the current directory was searched second (before the system directory), but that was changed for security purposes. But can someone explain to me how the current directory could ever contain DLLs that the program needs, if the current directory is different from the other directories listed above…
