Active-Inactive Partitions?
by Guest Jethro- 14 replies
I have a system someone else set up that now has two partitions on the machine's single drive. The original OS was ME and XP HOME was installed on it. He ended up with the old ME portion and all its apps in partition C, and the new XP portion in partition D. Partition C is the active partition. At boot-up you get the option of selecting ME or XP, and both seem to work fine. I want to delete partition C and then add it's space to partition D. PQMagic warns me to be sure to make the remaining partition the new active partition after partition C is deleted. I am afraid to proceed because I can find no way to specify (set) whether a partition is active or not…

Adobe Photoshop Elements doesn't see XP video components
by Guest Greatoutdoors- 2 replies

I have a Dell Dimension 4600 Series computer, bought late in 2003. It has an Intel Pentium 4 Processor - 2.66GHz and a 128MB DDR NVidia GeForce FX 5200 graphics card. My OS is XP Professional. I recently tried to install Adobe Photoshop Elements 5.0 and got an error message saying that I "must have at least VGA" in order to continue the installation. I had installed the application originally on my work machine, but removed it as I decided I should only be using it at home. (Don't know if this has anything to do with it or not.) I have Googled for information and found nothing useful, and found no reference to Photoshop when I did a search of posts on …

I am trying to get Windows to load a particular application for a kiosk mode. What I am trying to do is have the program load automatically and block others from getting directly to Windows (similar to what you might see at a Kinkos). I would be very greatful if anyone has some suggestions!

desktop computer was fine, turned off for week, now is crashed?
by Guest Daytona Dave- 1 reply

When i tried to turn on again, it came on, spun up kinda weird, and nothing would come up...then it would sometimes go to safe mode setup screen for a few seconds and before you could do anything the entire comp would just shut back down, or would show the XP logo for a few seconds and then shut down. The only way i could try and turn it on again was by turning off main power supply switch and turning it back on and then press button on front of machine. After that it would shut back down, front switch wont respond til you cycle the switch on Power supply again. After several attempts at getting anywhere that way, now no matter what i do, nothing will pow…

Urgent - "UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME" stop error
by Guest TheBobMachine@gmail.com- 3 replies

Hi. Since this morning, whenever I try to boot up my desktop computer I've been getting an "UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME" Stop error. The technical information of the Stop error is: *** STOP: 0x000000ED (0x87353030,0xC0000006,0x00000000,0x00000000). The blue screen comes on after the Windows XP splash has been up for a couple of seconds. I haven't installed any new hardware or software -- it was fine yesterday and it's not today. Right now I'm running Ubuntu off a CD but I need Windows back to run a program. I read about the error on the Microsoft Knowledge Base (http:// support.microsoft.com/kb/297185), but the second parameter isn't 0xC0000032 (which means it's not…

scroll button active only for window mouse is over
by Guest Eric Anderson- 0 replies

I would like to make the scroll button active ONLY for the window the mouse is over. .. I hate it when you are in Windows explorer and try to scroll down a list of folders in the left column and the right window scrolls through files, You have to click on a folder and it opens that folder (which is NOT what you intended). or If you are filling out a form and you just entered the number of passingers for Northwest, go to another area on the form and accidently hit the scroll button changing the number of passingers from 2 to 4!!!!! How do you make the scroll button work ONLY for the window you are mousing over? I have Windows XP and looked at the mou…

I have a system running fully patched XP that I need to reformat and reinstall XP. However, when I hold down F8 on startup to try to start in command mode I get the screen showing the various options but I cannot move the cursor from the default option by using the keyboard arrows. I tried swapping keyboards but same results. It appears that the keyboard is frozen. Anyone know of another means of accomplishing this? Marv

Native Backup utility
by Guest Curtis Vaughan- 3 replies

I have a client that has 4 XP machines. They all do a daily backup to a share on one of the machines using the built-in backup program. What I find strange is that although the backups seem to be working fine, the file size for each computer each day is exactly. I'm not looking at the files right now, so I can't say the exact size, but let's say they are something like 1.4 Gb each. More precisely let's say Explorer is reporting each file as: 1428 Mb each. (Again, I don't remmember the exact size being shown). Would this be correct? Does XP's backup utility merely use a specific size regardless of how much is being backed up? Thanks for any input.
