No Internet Connection
by Guest Buzzman1964- 1 reply

I have had a small network in my home for a few years now. At this time my wife's computer won't connect to the internet. At first it had low connectivity. Now it says that it is connected but it isn't. I get a weird IP address (169.254.36.30) when connected. I was using a Linksys BEFSR81 router that recently died (only operates at 10 half MPS now) and a D-Link DI-524 wireless when this happened. Interestingly I received a notice that the computer had restarted after it downloaded an important update. How it connected for this I have no idea. Any ideas out there? -- BMB

Under Reporting Hard Drive Size
by Guest Ugly Trick- 13 replies

I have a two hard drive system. One is a 12.7 Gigabyte capacity, and the other one is and 80 gigabyte capacity. When I had Windows 98 SE, the software put a dynamic drive overlay in the boot program. I upgraded to XP Home and stayed with the FAT 32 file system. Now the computer is reporting the capacity of the 80 gigabyte hard drive as 31.4 gigabyte. I have tried every suggestion that I could find, to no avail. The 80 gigabyte hard drive is the slave in the system, because I want to primarily use it for storage. Help! I do not want to change the file system and have to reinstall the XP Home OS. Ugly Trick

recycle bin

6:10 AM 7/12/2007 RE: Recycle Bin Inquiry Occasionally I want to review some of the items in the recycle bin. When I (double) click on an item, I get a properties message box. I don't want the properties. I want the actual program to execute. (± 95% of the time I want to look at a text file.) How can I execute the actual file without having to restore it? Thank you, Barry Karas

Networking 2 computers
by Guest The Golfer's Wife- 4 replies

I have a new notebook and an existing computer. The computer runs on XP, the notebook on Vista. I am on ADSL and I now have a new 4-port Belkin ADSL 2+ modem and all the hardware is working ok. I am trying to network the two computers so that I can share files (only in case of a breakdown in either one). I have the printer software installed on both and it prints on either computer (depending which is hooked to an ISB port). I am very happy with all of this. I have given the same name to both network names and HOME as the generic name. But the network won't work. Is there something else I should do? The Golfer's Wife

pirated windows
by Guest fordbill- 17 replies

Does anyone buy software anymore? XP, Vista and Office 2007 are all available for free online. They all have serial numbers and activation cracks, they are even go through Microsoft's own validation process. I'm sure many of you have pirated software but don't like to admit it. Lets take a poll. Reply back for: Yes, I have pirated software or No, I do not have pirated software.

How much room should I really allocate for restore points? System Restore wants 10% of my 100GB drive and that seems like way too much.

Intermittent USB problem
by Guest sjmarks- 9 replies

There are 4 USB ports on my computer. Often, one or more fails to work and the device that is plugged into it is not recognized. One reboot usually corrects the problem but not always. Does anyone have any idea of what might be the problem? I don't recall having this problem before I did a clean reinstall of Windows XP.

I noticed that I have a few Gb of data in Temp Int Files folder (winXPpro). I tried removing all the files but it just doesn't work. They all dissapeared from the folder after deleting but when I check the properties of the folder there is still a few Gb of something which I can't see although in Folder Options I marked the 'show hidden files' nad 'show system files' checkboxes. Also I tried deleting whatever is there from Internet Explorer but with no effect. Yaro

Hard drive cleaning
by Guest pheasant- 5 replies

The box is REALLY starting to crawl. The kids have left, and I'd like to format and start fresh. Debating between an external hard drive to copy everything to, format the installed drive, adding desired programs and data back; OR just buying another hard drive removing current one, install XP on it, then put old hd back in as a second pulling off desired programs and data then formatting it. This box is 5+ years old, P4 Northwood 2GHz with 512 RDRAM and an 80GB hd. Also pre USB2 so external drive transfer would be extremely slow. Don't need anything newer/faster for us, and would like to tinker again after being away from building since the Athlon …

When doing Disk Cleanup on WinXPSP2, the option to Compress Old Files to Save Disk Space is available. What criterion or criteria is/are used by the OS to determine "Old" - is it based on Modified Date? Last Accessed Date? Thanks, -- JCB\1059
