Opening html file etc.
by Guest Eustace- 6 replies

For two or three days now I have experienced some peculiar events: (1) When I click at a local html file I get an alert like: Windows cannot find 'C:\my files\webpage.html'. Make sure you typed the name correctly, and then try again. To search for a file, click the Start button and click Search. while the webpage loads OK at the FF2 (my default browser). (2) When I close one program, another program closes simultaneously. This happened 2 times with the same 2 programs. I run Ad-aware and it found 2 registry keys and 1 registry value (dialers, low risk) that it took care off. Then I run Spybot and it didn't find any other problems. Since the 2 p…

Time showing wrong
by Guest Frustrated in Redding- 2 replies

When typing and saving documents or emails onto my hard drive, the time created shows correctly. However, when I send a document or email to someone else or place a file in a shared folder, they see the time as one hour later. My control panel "date and time" reads correctly for my time zone. What is happening and how do I correct this?

Linux vs. Windows for voting systems?
by Guest resonator80- 3 replies

Computerized voting systems (aka DREs or Direct Recording Electronic) must be based on an operating system, for example, Windows or Linux. Linux has the advantage of being open so that all the source code can be open. Windows source code will not be opened to anyone. Some people have argued that the basic Windows operating system can remain secret as long as the voting application program (i.e. C, Python, etc) is open. Here are some questions about such an arrangement. 1. Could someone tamper with the Windows OS or put in some additional code that would not be found in an inspection of the application program that could alter the results? 2. Could vir…

Geek question -RAM speed/ benchmarks
by Guest PowerUser- 8 replies

Hi- I just installed new Kingston 2*1GB RAM on my Dell Inspiron 1505 (Intel Calistoga i945PM). The earlier memory was 533MHz, while the new modules are 667 MHz (They are http://www.buy.com/retail/product.asp?sku=204884016). The problem is that these modules are running at 533Mhz. I verified that the 945PM does indeed support 667 (http://www.intel.com/products/chipsets/945pm/index.htm). However, these modules are running at 533 for sure. Everest says the memory speed is really 667, however the Memory bus 'Effective clock' is 533Mhz, with the real clock being 267 (It doubles with dual channel). Before I upgraded my RAM, I had taken benchmarks (Everes…

in which double clicking said file type does nothing
by Guest Captain America Online- 5 replies

I have two file types which I treat the same because I accept both in an applicaiton I built. So the file association settings are exactly the same for both extensions and are actually set at install time by InstallShieldExpress. When I double click on a file of type1, the file is opened in my application correctly. For file of type2, nothing happens, but right-clicking and choosing to Open With... produces the proper results. What I have checked is the file association. And to add to the mystery, this problem only exists on one of a group of computers I have. On other computers, everything works right. So, my file doesn't open when double-clicked…

Can't delete files
by Guest Pete- 1 reply

I had inadvertently "restored" some folders/files from my Vista installations (Common Files, Internet Explorer folder etc) to a folder in my XP installation. Unfortunately I cannot delete these files or folders - the message I get is "Access Denied". I've tried to change the attribute of these files but am not allowed to do that either. I'd like to get rid of these folders which are occupying quite a large space on my hard disk and would appreciate any help.
