My daughter has a system that when you boot it up and it is asking for the password, you can type it in on the keyboard, but after Windows XP starts, you can not input anything from the keyboard. You can launch programs using the mouse, but nothing with the keyboard... why?

File menu flashing loop unstoppable
by Guest markinstead@gmail.com- 1 reply

About two days go, my file menu started flashing in a super-fast loop in Firefox. The same problem occurs in all other programs. The "flash" looks as if I'm pressing the alt-key about ten times per second. As you can imagine, this is terrorizing my ability to type a message; even this posting is taking forever to type. Pointing/ clicking is not sufferring, just typing due to keyboard shortcuts being activated by the momentarily-dropped file menu Is this a known malfunction? infection? Is there a fix? It's really impossible to just work past it. Thank you, -Mark Gaffney

Question - System Standby & Remote Desktop
by Guest Jim- 1 reply

I'm running 3 computers on a hardwired LAN, two of the systems are in a remote location and the third is local. I frequently connect to my remote systems via "remote desktop". When these systems are not needed, I shut them down remotely with the run command called shutdown. However, I must go to the remote location to power them back up - can't do a wol. In order to conserve power and not have to shut these systems down entirely, I decided to enable the system standby mode (S3) on the two remote computers. This seems to work ok and the computers do wake up when I tap their keyboard or move their mouse. What I'm now trying to do is use th…

Back up
by Guest J- 5 replies

I am backing up My Documents to an external hard drive. I installed ntbackup from my Win XP Home CD. However, the icon it backs up to does not look like a folder. Am I better off just dragging the folder over instead of using this utility? Also, how do you import if from the external disk if I ever had to? Thanks, John

Mouse jumps after resizing window
by Guest Tim- 4 replies
Yesterday I read some Microsoft tips and one which I did I'd like to reverse. It said you could hold Ctrl key down and double click the toolbar and your window would become full size of your screen(toolbar would disappear), to get it back you just raise your mouse up to it and all would come back for a short time. Since doing this my mouse has started to jump around and become sluggish(for a short time when going to the toolbar), How can I reverse this action? I could not find anything about it, I don't believe its spyware doing this, I just got pc back from pc tech's which cleaned all up plus I have run Adware and Spybot.

Linux vs. windows for voting systems?
by Guest resonator80- 8 replies
Computerized voting systems (aka DREs or Direct Recording Electronic) must be based on an operating system, for example, Windows or Linux. Linux has the advantage of being open so that all the source code can be open. Windows source code will not be opened to anyone. Some people have argued that the basic Windows operating system can remain secret as long as the voting application program (i.e. C, Python, etc) is open. Here are some questions about such an arrangement. 1. Could someone tamper with the Windows OS or put in some additional code that would not be found in an inspection of the application program that could alter the results? 2. Could vir…

Waking a computer for Scheduled Backup??
by Guest rik- 1 reply
I have set up a backup using the backup app included in the XP operating system. I have told it to "wake the computer" to complete the event, I have made sure "run event only if logged in" is NOT checked. Nevertheless, the computer never "wakes", from standby, hibernation, or full power off, in order to complete at the scheduled time. Any ideas?

Ghost 2003 Boot Disk Problem...
by Guest info@robertovalente.net- 1 reply

Hi everybody, I have used Norton Ghost 2003 for years with no problems on my machine (I have two Samsung SpinPoint HDs, taken from the box from my supplier, on removable trays and everynight I used to shut off the machine, insert the second HD (which is otherwise in a drawer) and the floppy and backup the first HD, using the -ID and -FSI switches, because I also have a Linux partition...) One day, my MB died and fortunately my supplier had the exact same one in the store (ASUS P4P8X), so to avoid having to format everything because of a different chipset... Everything works fine as far as the computer is concerned, except for the Ghost floppy... I have tr…

Cursor Focus / Ghost Alt-Tabs
by Guest Zeddy65- 0 replies

Im running XP on a new (3 months) dual core Atholon, and I'm having a problem with my cursor switching focus mid-typing. Sometimes it goes to the text prompt in another window, sometimes the text just doesn't go anywhere. Occassionally, as I try to post chat, I will hit enter a couple times, and it ends up restarting my machine. I'm using a Logitech USB G-15 keyboard, in case that makes a difference. A problem, no doubt related, is the sudden alt-tabbing to desktop while Im playing a full screen game. Has anyone any clue what might be the problem? I thank you in advance for any responses. Zed

Unsolveable permissions problem
by Guest Tom wilson- 0 replies

Hi! I have a Windows enterprise with multiple workstations and servers. We write our own internal applications in VB.Net. One of these machines will not run these programs when logged in as a user. If I log in as the domain Administrator, all 3 apps work just fine like they do on every other workstation. On this one, any attempt to run them returns the error "The application has caused an exception and will now close" immediately upon launch. There are no other details other than the error report it wants to send that means nothing. I have: - Reinstalled .Net Framework 1.1 (not used by these apps) - Reinstalled .Net Framework 2.0 (they use this) - …

Restore point
by Guest digimom- 6 replies

How can I create my auto restore points EVERY day? I leave my computer on almost all the time. I created one last night as my computer was working just perfectly but noticed that there were no other RP's prior to this, it frightened me. I would like it to create at least one restore point every 18 hours if possible. Prior to this there were always many days that did not contain RP's. It always creates one if I run Registry Mechanic.

Windows and IE Suddenly Display Large Fonts.
by Guest Pam- 0 replies

I have Windows XP, Media Center Edition (Version 5.1 9Build 2600.xpsp_sp 2_gdr.070227-2254: service pack 2) and Internet Explorer 7. Overnight, the display has changed. Fonts now look different, and much larger than before. This is true to some extent on the desktop and to a large extent on Internet Explorer. We haven't done anything to change our settings. This just seems to have come from nowhere. Here's what I've tried so far: Here's what I've checked so far: * On Internet Explorer, when I go to the "Tools" menu, then to "Internet Options" and then "Accessibility", all the boxes are unchecked (as they should be). * O…
