July Update Disaster Part Deux
by Guest Dave Thompson- 4 replies

Brief recap: After the update on Tuesday, no Microsoft products (IE, Office 2007, Outlook, etc) would run without errors. After digging all day, I discovered that one or more of the Security Updates reset all Process permissions to read only. At least the error did not change third party process permissions; only the Microsoft ones. I have set all Processes to Full Access. The system is now functioning normally. However, I feel that not all processes need or require full access. Does anyone know what the permission are for the Microsoft processes.

Where is the list of steps the network settings transfer floppy/usb executable does?

I'm trying to help some pour soul hundreds of miles away figure out why they can't get networking going to a second pc, the first one is working and on the net. Doing this "remote control", when they don't know enough to be able to do this on their own, only complicates things. I have searched the net repeatedly trying to find out exactly what steps the executable carries out when you create a network transfer floppy/usb drive. Can anyone point me to the authority of what that does? Hopefully with that list I can help them walk through that list step by step and maybe we can figure out their problem. Thank you

Slow system
by Guest Jeff- 5 replies

I recently removed a trojan virus for my system and my computer seems to be running slower than it should. Especially the internet. I'm using IE7 and it seems pages are loading slower than normal and some pages aren't loading properly, even with my high speed cable connection. I ran Regcare and it found over 1000 problems with my registry and file associations. However it did not fix them because I didn't purchase the software. Does anyone know of any reliable freeware I can use to fix these problems and speed up my PC? Any advice and help is greatly appreciated!

Hi, the sence of community is great here, I've just bookmarked this site on StumbleUpon & Delicious... Ok I saw a similar topic here a couple of weeks ago and it peaked my interest, but failed to find it now... can anyone direct me in the right direction so i can drop the author an email? The post was mentioning leverage (trading multiple) allowed in forex is bigger than in any other market - up to 200:1, compared with 8 to 10:1 for futures and a miserly 2:1 for equities. They offered to learn a secret method of foreign currency trading and predicting market movements, thanks to which one will be able to turn $1,000 into $1,000,000 in 24 months (or…

by Guest johngood .............- 4 replies

I recently did a clean reinstall of xp and used the microsoft 'back up utility' saved to an external hard drive. when I copy the file back from the ext hard drive to my desk top it appears as an icon of 19.5 GB which wont open. So I went to the microsoft web search and it tells me its a file extension BKF that i need to open it. Being a novice I'm now 'stumped' as to what next to do to get the original files back to my pc. Thanks for any advice.

Games crashes after July Updates
by Guest Jonah AJ- 1 reply

Since installing the various July updates all the DX9 games crash on loading and shut down. I am running Win XP Pro on a Intel 6800 Extreme Core Duo 2 and 2GB RAM. I remember that there was a similar problem with an update some time ago and a fix was produced that you could download to fix the problem. Anyone else had similar problems or know of a way to correct this behaviour?

Can't boot after converting to logical disk
by Guest DennisQWilson@gmail.com- 2 replies
- 234 views
The header pretty much says it all. I need to convert the partition containing Windows XP to a logical disk, but when I do, the operating system won't finish loading. This probably has to do with the HAL or something, but darned if I can figure out what. (The drive letters stay the same.) Can anyone tell me how I can get my currently installed Windows XP environment to load from a logical disk without reinstalling? Thanks.

WinXP: Help and Support issue
by Guest C J.- 0 replies

Okay... On my girlfriends PC, when opening help and support sometimes, and filling in the search bar, and clicking the arrow... she'll get a Search Results box w/ three items appearing on left side of screen. 1. Suggested Topics, 2. Full-text search Matches, and 3. Microsoft Knowledge Base. Just now, I typed in Format to see what she's complaining about. Search Results shows: Suggested topics 15 results, Full-text search matches 15 results, Microsoft Knowledge Base shows 0 results. For a topic as critical as Formatting, you'd think MSKB would show X number of results, on top of the 30 already shown above it right? Now - typing in KB article n…

Can't Access Workgroup
by Guest el Diablo- 2 replies

Hello, I have a laptop that the hard drive died in yesterday. I have an old hard drive (two years old) from the laptop that has the OS loaded and all my programs. I had replaced it with a larger drive and put it away for a backup. Anyway, since I've put it back in I can't access the WORKGROUP on the network. There are two other PC's an my home network, one runs Windows 2000, the other runs Windows XP Pro, as well the laptop runs Windows XP Pro. All networking worked fine before the hard drive crashed. The drive I put back in used to access these two PC's as well. I looked on Microsoft's site at article 318030 which told me to make sure these two items…
