dvd-rom not spinning up
by Guest Chuck- 4 replies

I recently upgraded my PC's drives, adding a DVD-RW while keeping the original DVD-ROM as a secondary drive. Here's the problem: while the drive shows up in My Computer, and is "functioning normally" in Device Manager, it won't read anything. I insert a disc (DVD/CD, doesn't matter), it'll spin up for a few seconds, then spin down, and that's it. As far as my PC is concerned, there's no disc in there. HELP!! 8-G

I just got a BlackJack, installed the disk with ActiveSync 4.0. When I first tried, it wouldn't connect, my phone reconized the conn., but pc didn't. I tried unplugging and plugging back in a couple of times. It took, but when pc went to retrieve setting from phone, pc just rebooted. I upgraded to 4.5, same exact thing happened. Can anyone tell me what is wrong, or at least send me in the right direction??

by Guest Jim- 2 replies

I was able to fix my system failure to run the 1.1 update. Thanks to Froto and a few others to numerous to mention. Another question.. When you run windows update does microsoft know what software I have installed and only send me the updates that I need? Example...If I have a software that needs .Net Framework 2.0, will they then send me the updates for that version. If I don't need 1.1 then they won't send it? Am I dreaming? Thanks.

Removing Past Selections From the Open File Dialog Box
by Guest Bill- 1 reply
Whenever I select "Open File" in Quicktime, DivX, etc... and I click on the "File Name" box, a drop down list appears of recent files. This seems to be a list of the first files that I have used and this list does not seem to update to reflect new selections. I have tried to remove them from within each program but this seems to be a Windows related issue. How do I delete these file names so more recent selections can be recorded? Bill.

On one computer KB928366 kepts installing over and over again... when I power down I receive a message that an update must be installed... Hi Whilst my Motherboard was being repaired another was temporarily installed but with a different Network Card. Since then whenever I try to set up a Network between my PC and my Laptop I get an message to say that my IP Address is being used by another Netwpork Card but that it is not connected to this machine and do I wish to choose another, warning me that the "other" device may not work if I say no. Of course I say no and everything works. However, Event Viewer shows an error every time I boot up with the message "The IP Address lease {my IP Address} for network card with network address {my existing Card's MAC identification} has been denied …

Windows Explorer window always flickering
by Guest tshad- 2 replies

I noticed on my Windows Explorer window on my XP that the left pane (that displayes the folder tree) is constantly refreshing. Why is that and is it slowing down my system? We have some machines where it only seems to happen on the networked (shared) folders so the only the folders below the mapped drives will flicker and not the local drives folders. What is happening here? Is it something I should be worried about? Thanks, Tom.
