LAN icon...
by Guest A- 2 replies

....stays in its' initial state - "Aquiring Network Address," but, it has already established a LAN connection, because IE7 and OE6 both work okay, and never goes to the two tiny solid blue screens, if oyou see what I mean. ....any idea why the LAN icon in Sytem Tray stays with the little teeny golf ball rolling from side to side ? TIA regards, Richard

Under what architecture is Windows XP compiled?
by Guest George- 7 replies
I know it supports x86 processors, but what I don't know if XP is "compiled" under i386 (there are in fact several folders named 386 in the WINDOWS directory) making it upward compatible with later processors: i486, i586 and i686?... or, is it locally "compiled" when installed in any PC in the latest architecture available? In other words: does XP take advantage of the latest i686 instruction set when installed on a P2 o newer processor? Or its binaries are compiled in i386 and therefore compatible with i686 processors? thanks in advance

XP SP3 and the $hf_mig$ folder...
by Guest frodo@theshire.net- 3 replies

Shouldn't the migration folder be empty after SP3? I suspect it left it untouched in case the user does an uninstall, but if you never wish to uninstall couldn't you empty $hf_mig$ in addition to deleting the sp3 uninstall folder? Together they are over a gig (I know, big deal...). Just wondering... TIA

ok, so I downloaded windows xp professional media center edition 2005 and it came an rar archive. now to use this as a windows c.d. I have to burn it to a c.d. as an iso. so How do I do that? I have Nero and when I click the option for "burn image to disk" I have to browse for the file. and when I go to the location of the file, it's not shown, I think that's because it's not an iso. Can anybody help me please? If your confused I'll make it simpler. Windows xp professional in a rar archive, how do I burn it to disk to use it as a windows c.d. MMC and Snap-ins
by Guest comish- 5 replies

I can not get any snapins in MMC. It just says that there is an error, sends it to Microsoft, and shuts down. I am using XP pro sp3. Flash disappeared and I can not get it to reinstall, I can not see any of my devices in device manager. My consol under MMC is blank and it shuts down if I try to add any snap in. This is really getting frustrating.

Help Needed - Cannot Update, Administrator Privileges Broken
by Guest dark54555- 8 replies

This all started when I noticed I was short a few windows updates on XP SP2. I decided I should run WU manually, and ran into a roadblock. It tries to install Windows Genuine Advantage Validation Tool, which fails every time. OK, simple enough. I went on the here and tried all the fixes: manually reinstalling WGA, running the tool the MS guy recommends, nothing works. My office's IT guy happened to be in, so I asked him. He says just download SP3 standalone, should be a workaround. Downloaded, tried to install. "You do not have permission to update Windows XP. Please contact your system administrator." ...What? I'm on an account in the administrators …

printer problem after sp3
by Guest G2lenn- 2 replies
I have 3 machines on a network, 2 XP and 1 Vista. XP sp3 was installed on the 2 machines both machines printed no problem before sp3, now only one will print to my Brother HL 2040 connected to the Vista machine (Vista machine still prints). Nothing else has been changed except the addition of sp3. I've checked the usual firewall settings and printer settings. All of my other shared files are still accessible. If I try to add a printer I receive the message "print spooler is not running". Any ideas?

Question on OEM license and Virtual Machines
by Guest ToddAndMargo- 5 replies
Hi All, I am going to be installing XP as a virtual machine (VM) on an existing Linux server. License wise, Uncle Bill wants a separate XP license for each XP VM. He also does not want us to sell XP OEM without also selling a new computer with it. Question: license wise, does a "new" VM constitute a "new" computer? Or, do I need to sell the full "retail" version of XP? (If it is considered a "gray area", I'll just go with the retail version.) Many thanks, -T

I am running Windows XP professional (not service pack 2) on my other computer and when I try to start it up I get this error message: Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt: <Windows root>\system32\ntoskrnl.exe. Please re-install a copy of the above file. Two days before this I had upgraded Adobe 7 to Adobe 8 and then I did an update for windows. My computer ran faster but then froze up. I had to "force it off and when I tried to turn it back on, I received the error message. It won't even allow me into safe mode at this point. Can anyone tell me what to do next and how? Please help:(
