Failing XP computer
by Guest Dean- 10 replies

I got a scare this morning when my daughter's computer wouldn't boot. It would stop almost immediately into the startup process at where it would say 'www.dell.com' (in a blue background, if I recall) at the very top, with the rest of the screen blank. Also, the computer was making a faint ringing sound, almost as if someone was barely hitting a tiny bell with a tiny hammer. I tried rebooting twice and the same think happened. Fortunately, I also noticed that , just before it 'froze', there was an option to hit two F keys, one was F12 and I don't recall what the other one was. So I rebooted again, as soon as that flashed by the screen, I hit F12 and i…

I have an old computer that I want to get rid of, but there are some files on there that I want to save over first. The old computer is running Windows 95. My current in on XP Home Edition. I have tried using a Flash/USB drive and an external hard drive which connects through USB on the old computer, but neither was recognized. I purchased a Parallel File Transfer Cable, but when I try to connect, I receive error 771 - the network is busy. I'm sure that there are steps I need to take that would cause the computers to be able to talk to one another, but I need a set of step by step instructions. Can anyone help?? I'm not sure if this is the right u…

Can't Find Folder
by Guest dnamertz- 2 replies
I was trying to find a file and it was shown to be in the Local Files\Temporary Internet Files folder within my personal documents and settings folder. When I went into that personal folder, there was no Local Files folder. So, I clicked on Properties for my personal folder and checked the "unhide" box. It then said it was copying over a bunch of files. When it was done, I could not even find my personal folder, and about half my icons have disappeared from the desktop.

Turning off a laptop built-in mouse
by Guest Bugsy- 3 replies

My desktop crashed a week ago and I am now using my Dell Inspiron 6000 as a temporary workstation, running Windows XP Home. I may be using it for a month or so until I can find a new desktop (hopefully with XP Home installed). My problem is (well, actually an anoyance), I have a Logitech wireless mouse I am using with the laptop. Is there a way to TEMPORARILY disable the Dell's built in mouse? I looked through the Control Panel options (I am using XP Home) but didn't see an option for disabling the built in mouse. Thanks,

I know this isn't in the right group, but for some reason, I couldn't get the Internet group to load. Is there any way I can get serial numbers for software online? I have tried some sites, but they don't have the software I have on it. Or is there any way to extend the 30-day trial period? Thanks for all help! -- Message posted via WindowsKB.com http://www.windowskb.com/Uwe/Forums.aspx/windowsxp/200806/1

Am now running XP Home Edition with SP2. To get SP3, do I have to download and install from Windows Update or are their other Microsoft sites I can download from, preferring to "Save" to disc rather than set it on "Run" and take my chances? Any input. suggestions or "do's and don'ts that you can offer on this subject would be appreciated. Thanks!

Plug and play drive settings for system restore keep changing.
by Guest Sandy J- 0 replies

I have Windows XPpro, service pack 3, running IE7. The computer is approximately 4 years old. My plug & play drive settings in system restore keep getting changed. I have system restore set not to monitor that drive because it hasn't got anything on it except music and graphics. I'm not sure that it matters but the drive is a Seagate Free Agent with 500 GB of storage. From time to time I notice my system slowing down and when I check system restore the setting is changed to "monitoring". Does anyone know how this happens? It's not the upgrade to service pack 3 that caused it because this used to happen when I had service pack 2 as well. One m…

How to use verifier?
by Guest Gary Roach- 4 replies

I'm debugging a machine running XP Pro SP2. It gives a blue screen occasionally with a c5 stop error. It seems I'm supposed to run the driver verifier utility to deal with this. I don't know which drivers to monitor and monitoring them all slows the system down so much that it's unusable. I've analyzed the minidump from the crash (output included afterwards) and it tells me the problem is in Internet Explorer. Which drivers should I monitor? Thanks for any help. -- Gary Roach ADB Services --------------------------------------- Minidump Output -------------------------------------- Microsoft ® Windows Debugger Version 6.6.0007.5 Copyright ©…

Restoring performance?
by Guest Goomba- 10 replies
It's a couple of years old, and my Dell Inspiron 6000 (with Service Pack 3) has become sluggish opening files and accessing the Internet (100MBPS connection). I frequently run Disk Cleanup, Defrag, error checking, and the machine is malware & virus-free. I even uninstalled a half-dozen never used programs. My C drive shows 28.5 GB used, 42.1 GB free space. Is there a simple way, which requires no knowledge of the Registry, to restore performance?
