Cannot access some websites after virus cleaning
by Guest Alex- 7 replies

Hi, I experience huge issues with my laptop since I was infected by Virtumonde earlier this week. I managed to clean Virtumonde by using spybot, but even though the virus seems to have disappeared, I still experience huge problems with Internet browsing. I can access some websites like Lenovo, FreeCall, Free, my router, my bank, but I cannot access other websites such as http://www.lemonde.fr, linkedin, facebook, oanda, smartmoney... that's weird, that seem that a pipe is blocked or something filtering the DNS, only allowing some sites... but ping and resolving is OK! I tried flushing DNS to no avail, I have cleared all my caches and temp fi…

this file came from another computer and might be blocked
by Guest raybat- 3 replies

I downloaded a an Oracle database driver so I could move some data into our SQL Server but I could not open the file. Error: "this file came from another computer and might be blocked to help protect this computer" Thanks Mickey! I found the answer on Google that describes how to fix the problem but there is probably still code running out there that needs to be destroyed. You need to run gpedit.msc and change a setting under Administrative Templates. Check Google for the specifics. I am trying to find out which Microsoft update did this to my computer and remove it. I will probably need to restore to a check point but this would be much eas…

Easily access "favorite" folders in Windows Explorer?
by Guest Rick- 3 replies
There are a lot of folders on my hard drive and network that I would like super-quick access to when in Windows Explorer rather than endless drilling-down to subfolders and different drives. I've been playing around with different ways to do this. I wish Windows Explorer automatically displayed a menu of your "frequently-used folders" the way the File menu of Windows apps displays your most frequently-used files. Is there some Windows Explorer add-on (not likely!) that would allow this? Or ... how do other folks do this? Another thought: I wish the Favorites menu in Windows Explorer could be kept distinct from the Favorites menu of Internet Explorer…

Microsoft Charging $90 for .NET Undermines Huge Market Compelling The Use of Linux! [2] Anybody with eyes sight can see "digital signage" emerging as a "display device platform" and a HUGE OPPORTUNITY FOR DEVELOPERS as the display device platform emerges and people understand the many many opportunities now available to them. Typical current digital signage implementations utilize larger LCD displays with project costs in the many thousands of dollars. Who can argue with the facts as anybody can observe? Go into any of the thousands of taverns, mom and pop restaurant or coffee shop in any regional urban locale and you'll never ever see them using large for…

OS is Windows XP SP3. Error message will appear regularly multiple times throughout the day. Error box title is: Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library Message inside box is: Runtime Error! Program: C:\WINDOWS\system32\wbem\wmiprvse.exe This application has requested the Runtime to terminate it in an unusual way. Please contract the application's support team for more information. I thought this issue was isolated to my laptop (Fujitsu) but now the error is showing up on my other laptop (Vaio). Notified the MS helpdesk. Their response was that the issue was related to a specific program and the only way to isolate the issue is to run msconfig,…

Slow CopyProfileDirectoryEx Function over WAN
by Guest RichR- 1 reply

I have spent the last 2 days carrying out performance testing in an attempt to understand why it can take a long time (over 2 minutes) to logon and logoff our corporate XP build. I have created 29 different scenarios using a combination of profile server location, machine location, quantity of files in profile, and quantity of folders in profile, and enabled userenv logging. The results quite clearly show that if the profile server is across a WAN link then increasing the number of folders in the profile results in a significant increase in logon and logoff times. Looking at the userenv.log it is also clear that the problem firmly and repeatedly lies with …

Save htm file - rename later, corrupts display
by Guest - Bobb -- 2 replies

I did a Google search but couldn't get "right keywords" to find appropriate answer. If not a quick answer, maybe just a URL/pointer. I run into this occasionally and curious why it happens / how to correct: Background - setup: While online I save a webpage to my Pc as htm, so it saves 2 files "XYZ.htm" file and a " XYZ_files ". Later on, (like today) I notice the god-awfully long filename and want to change it. Here's the filename: " HP Pavilion dv2000-dv6000-dv9000 and Compaq Presario v3000-v6000 Series Notebook PCs - HP Limited Warranty Service Enhancement.htm" and if I open it first - it looks fine - page is displayed just as it was when I was at HP w…

Nothing remains in the Control Panel - Power Options box. Is this a Windows XP problem or is it something in the mother board?

XP - nothing runs
by Guest guy- 6 replies

I am attepting to fix a friends Dell Laptop which is running Windows XP (not SP2 AFAIK) the intial problem is that running any program IE, Notepad, Works etc. results in the '... has encountered a problem and needs to close' dialogue. I have tried various things, safe mode etc. with no effect (I can not do much as nothing runs!) and have now reinstalled XP. I now get the same dialogue for Apoint.exe on booting up, however attampting to run any program now simply results in a brief change of the mouse cursor to an hourglass, for maybe 1 to 2 seconds. As I can not run ***anything*** I am at a loss as to how to proceed, any ideas? Guy
