by Guest Carol V.- 9 replies

Hi all. Lately when I start or restart my computer it stalls at the startup screen. The message is cut off on the left side of the screen. What I can see of the message is: S ROM checksum error ecting floppy drive A media... ert system disk and press enter I'm guessing it's asking me to insert a system disk into my floppy drive, but why? I do not have a disk in the drive. Thanks, Carol

Appearances - TextLabel unalterable
by Guest Petersrin- 0 replies

XP HOME on 3GB DDR 400, Athlon X2, GeForce 8600 GT I've been working on making my system a dark theme via the appearance panel. However, certain parts of the GUI seem unalterable: Text Label items (at least, that is what they'd be reffered to as in VB). So, the background of a window will be dark, and there will be a nice little section/container present without the ability to change its text color from black, hence making the dark background unusable. Is there a way around this? (ie. registry, changing the msstyle file, etc)... see image: http://www.experts-exchange.com/images/t36511/trouble.jpg

Command Prompt Here Help?
by Guest aimee4ever- 16 replies

Sorry if this happens to be in the wrong forum. Please direct me to the right one if that's the case. I installed Winrar earlier today and when I right clicked on the rar files, I was missing the extract menu options. "Extract here, extract all." That kind of menu. I searched on google to see if there was a resolution to this. I found this website: 'Shell integration and Program Installations on 64-bit Windows (XP and 2003 x64 Editions).' (http://www.geekswithblogs.net/bpaddock/archive/2005/04/02/28023.aspx) It provided some sort of help. I tried it and in the file I downloaded from this website was a CommandHere registry file. I followed the instructions, but…

I try to play one of the BC! file which I could not, the next thing my pc is very slow to response. These files were scanned & cleared by various scanners. Is it common to have the Task Manager utilise abt 65% of the cpu resources and when I launch the Superantispyware, it takes about 35%? TIA

Initial Boot - excessive disk access
by Guest +Bob+- 2 replies

When I booted today, my system was busy. Very busy. Didn't even finish rendering the desktop icons. Drive light on full time. This lasted for five minutes So, I started procexp and took a look. Explorer itself seemed to be sucking at least 20% of the CPU. It was the only program getting significant CPU time. The severe disk access was not showing up as reads or writes. There was one csrss.exe and one svchost.exe process were steadily doing repetitive IO, about one read every second each, but that continues now and has no impact. They each took about 5% of CPU on and off. Also, the svchost process had a sub/call running under it that was "wu.....exe" tha…

My Windows XP Pro SP2 laptop won't boot after applying the MS08-030 update. Windows gets stuck at the "starting up" screen. I replaced bthport.sys with the old file from the uninstall folder, but that didn't help. Using a BartPE CD, I was able to edit the registry to turn on verbose status messages during boot. Now I can see what's happening (not much). XP hangs while starting up WLNOTIFY. I see periodic disk activity, but I've seen that before (something about sensing the DVD drive). I've let it sit for over 20 minutes; still no boot. I read about the trojan WINOTIFY and made sure I have the real thing. I also copied a backup from dllcache, but still no j…

Error warning when shutting down pc
by Guest computerchallengedcc- 5 replies

XP210 pc- SP3 4 gig RAM This flashes on the screen too fast for me to read/write down all the information. It begins with "the instruction at 0X0012e614-------------could not be read"... The last part says something about debug, but closes too fast for me to read the entire thing. I was advised to review the event logs, but that is really doesn't work for me since I don't have a clue what I am reading when I see a couple of yellow warnings in the 'system' log file. I have tried changing the settings in my computer/properties/advanced/ settings for startup & recovery to longer than the 30 seconds it shows... thinking that would give me more time to…

FYI: Restoring DMA access on an "IDE ATA/ATAPI controller"
by Guest witan- 2 replies

The main harddrive on my computer (running Windows-XP Pro, now SP3) had slipped to PIO mode. Microsoft support information at http://support.microsoft.com/kb/817472 ("IDE ATA and ATAPI disks use PIO mode after multiple time-out or CRC errors occur") did not give me much joy. A google search took me to http://winhlp.com/node/10 and then on to the vbscript, http://winhlp.com/tools/resetdma.vbs. I ran the vbscript -- with a little trepidation, but my hard disk, Seagate ATA 160GB, was already agonizingly slow. On reboot I found that Ultra DMA Mode 5 has been restored, and my disk is shutting down, rebooting, hibernating, resuming, etc. at near normal speed. I tho…
