LAN disable - stops responding
by Guest RJK- 4 replies

Any idea why my XP LAN connection to my Linksys WAG354G (adsl modem-router-wireless), becomes unresponsive when I right-click "Local Area connection" in System Tray ? ...this problem recently appeared after adjusting some (seemingly :-) unrelated bios settings. Pondering on recent "changes" that could have caused it, ...the most recent "adjustment" was to disable the Gaming Port in bios. So I went back into bios and "enabled" it, and the above described effect / problem with LAN connection goes away. ...so why would the gaming port bios switch cause a problem with LAN connection to my router ? Possibly of relevance :- I've noticed that when XP (Ho…

Hi all, New here, searched a bit, no on-point posts to be had ... otherwise simple question: I'm running Win XP Pro (sp2) on a basic 250gb western digital drive. Had no problems. It's connected via SATA (SATA power as well). Yesterday I plugged in a second hard drive, a 750gb Samsung. SATA drive w/ SATA power. BIOS sees both hard drives. Device Manager shows 2 hard drives. Windows explorer doesn't ("my computer") show the newer drive, the 750. I can uninstall the 750 from device manager, reboot, and let windows install, but i still can't actually see the drive and work with it. I was hoping to be able to at least see it and format it and then use it…

Some windows won't open up from the Taskbar
by Guest sborah99- 12 replies

Hi all, Yesterday, I had a small problem opening up a Notepad file. I double-clicked it and it showed up in the Taskbar but it would not maximize on the screen. It still does that today, as does my website program, Cutesite Builder. All other programs open up fine from the Taskbar. I am running Windows XP with SP2. Any ideas what might cause this? Thanks, Stacy

Persistent Error Message
by Guest RLBobH- 1 reply

I run 2 computers, both connected to a printer, one via wireless connection through the wireless hub that the printer is connected to. I had tried to print without having the printer activated, and go an error message "PrintServer connect fail". I turned on the printer, and am able to print just as before. But the error message persists, whether I "X" it out, or press "OK". How do I get rid of this persistent error message. I use Windows XP media edition.

Mouse Pointer
by Guest JohnD- 1 reply

On two of my PC's the mouse pointer has started to behave as if it has a mind of its own. While moving it around, it will suddenly jump to some place off the screen. I have checked the Hardware Manager and there are no conflicts. I changed the mice from PS2 to USB and it made no difference. Any ideas, anyone? Using XP Pro with SP3, by the way.

Windows Desktop Search error: The path '- Windows Desktop Search'does not exist or is not a directory Whenever I try to do a search with WDS under XP SP3 now, I get a "Windows Explorer" dialog box popping up with the error: "The path '- Windows Desktop Search' does not exist or is not a directory." I've searched around and found very few reports of this problem and no proposed solutions. Any ideas how to troubleshoot?

x64 for Autodesk Inventor - What to watch for???
by Guest infiniteMPG- 0 replies

We are looking at upgrading our engineering workstations (generally Xeon 2.80GHz w/4Gb RAM upgrading to 6 or 8Gb with NVIDIA Quadro FX 4500 video) to Windows XP Pro x64. The main reason is to get better performance from Autodesk Inventor 2009 (we're currently running IV11). One issue we've already seen is that the add-ons we use in Inventor (iProperty Wizard, etc) will not function under x64 Inventor. A big hit but we're seeing what we can do about that. Our other question is we run a lot more then just Inventor. We run the full Office suite of products, AutoCAD, Visio, FastLook, Adobe, and several VB6 free standing apps to name a few. Does anyone know wh…

Create XP Boot/Repair/Install CD?
by Guest +Bob+- 8 replies

I have (legal :-) XP on a CD. However, it's not a bootable XP CD, it's a CD with all the setup and cab programs that originally ran with a script. I need to do a repair installation. Is there some way to create a bootable CD that will do a "repair" using my XP cabs & setup programs, etc from the installed OS? Thanks,

External name references in Excel

An issue that I thought would be addressed with XP; Excel retains old external references in the Applications.Names group and the files grow to unreasonable sizes. Has anyone had success in deleting these names with a VB program?

Re: beep every minute

Re: beep every minute I was trying to install some software and couldn't, so I used msconfig to turn off a bunch of stuff temporarily. That didn't help. Anyway, when I put msconfig back to normal, the computer was messed up. Weird. Most of the services were turned off and I had no record of which services I had been using. So I guessed at turning on services and everything seems to be running now. Did you ever see msconfig act like that before? Well, that's how I caused this alert sound problem to start. I may have some service running that I don't need that is doing this. Or it could be one of my protection programs such as NIS 2008, etc. Perhaps I s…

My Xp computer beeps exactly once every minute. It is the same sound made when you try to do something illegal in a game. I have checked the task manager, but it shows no applications running. How do you fix this when there is no error message to help?
