no monitor after resume from standby
by Guest rac8006- 1 reply

I've had a problem where the monitor stays in standby mode when I resume the computer using XP Pro SP2. I've tried two different video cards. The only way to get the system back is to pull the power cord. I've gone so far as to remove the video card and put it into a different system and it works fine. When I put it back into the failed system it still fails. Once I pull the power cord wait 5 seconds and put the cord back in the system it boots up fine. Any itdeas whats going on? RAC

Encryption removal
by Guest Richard- 13 replies

I have an Excel file that I encrypted. I wish to remove the encryption. After encrytion of this file, I was required by Dell to reload my OS (Windows XP SP2) on my home computer due to a problem they could not otherwise solve. Prior to the reload I had copied the Excel file to an external drive. After bringing my computer back up, I find I cannot open the Excel file because "The document may be read-only or encrypted". It's not read-only, but it was/is encrypted. Since I can't access it, I attempted to remove the encryption via "Properties, Attributes (Advanced)" and removing the check mark from "Encrypt contents to secure data". I tried to apply this b…

Question regarding SP 1 and SP 2
by Guest Winston 3456- 2 replies

I have a CIO attempting to tell me that at the time Microsoft was still supporting SP 1 with hot fixes that SP 1 and SP 2 were identical. I believe that there are some differences between them, including WPA support as well as other security features that are unique to SP 2. Assuming we were looking in 2006, am I correct that SP 2 was different that SP 1?

Microsoft Money Plus Installation
by Guest holliss- 5 replies

I know this isn't an XP question, but I couldn't find a forum to ask my question regarding Money Plus. I installed the software, and everything seemed to go o.k. When I opened the program I immediately got a message that Money required an update. This is new software mind you, and it already needs an update??? Anyway, I clicked to go ahead an install the required update. All seemed to be going o.k. and when the files indicated they indicated they were 100% finished. Then I immediately got a message informing that the software could not be installed, and to check my internet connection and make sure I had at least 100 mb of disk space available. The …

Can't Logon to Windows XP
by Guest JCook- 2 replies

My mother turned on her computer this morning and instead of coming up like it normally does, the Welcome screen appeared. When she selected her name, it showed "loading your personal settings", then the screen blinked, followed by "saving your settings" and back to the Welcome screen. Click the name again and the same process happens. Tried starting in Safe Mode and it takes you to the Welcome screen. This time the administrator is shown along with her name. Clicking either one of the options produced the same result as above and it doesn't go into safe mode. Any ideas??

by Guest thinman- 11 replies

Have several shortcuts on the desktop linking to different sites that I want to check on frequently. These have been functional for the past year with no problems. Two days ago, for some unknown reason (no new s/w installed or reconfig'd firewall, etc. ) whenever I click on a shortcut, an error message pops up stating that the URL can't be found. A couple of seconds later, it opens to the web site. Have deleted the links, rebooted, made new ones but the same thing happens. Any ideas as to why this is happening ?? thanks ray
