## Change Icon Default path
by Guest Twanny- 0 replies

When changing Windows icons, a dialogue box opens : Change Icon / Look for Icons in this file: %SystemRoot%\system32\SHELL32.dll. My question: Is there a registry tweak that can alter this default path to a folder where I keep all saved icons? I have searched Kelly's XP Tweaks and did a Google search, but could not find answers to my query. My system Windows XP Professional SP3 Thanks

XP - Device Disconnect sound for no reason
by Guest Richard Fangnail- 6 replies

I just got my first USB printer and it seems okay. However, after I turn off the printer, everything is normal for 10-15 minutes when suddenly Windows will make the "Device Disconnect" sound for no reason. I thought I would fix this by going to Device Manager and unchecking "Allow Windows to turn off device to save power" on the four root hubs - however, it just now made that sound again. I know how to change or turn off Windows sounds but that's not really the problem. It never did this before I got the USB printer (which is a small HP inkjet).

Max size of a directory
by Guest T. Valko- 8 replies

Hi Folks! From within Excel I generate simple text files (*.txt) and name them in sequence: File1.txt, File2.txt, File3.txt, etc, etc. The average size of one of these files is about 210 bytes. I need to generate "a lot" of these files. Specifically, I need 2622 of these text files. My question is: can I put all 2622 of these files in a single directory? What's the max size of a directory? I haven't tried it yet. If I can do this it will make my life much easier! -- Biff Microsoft Excel MVP

Brother Printer Ink Cartridge Nearly Empty --- After Only 2 Weeks!!! 1 2

I have a Gateway computer with the following: 1) a 1400-MHz Pentium 4 processor, 2) 256 MB of RAM, and 3) 40 GB of hard-drive space. The computer is running Windows Millennium Edition (ME). Two and a half weeks ago, I bought a Brother MFC-240C printer. This is a multifunction device: printer, copier, fax, and scanner. ---------- When I installed the ink cartridges, the machine cleaned the ink tube system. Then I pressed "Color Start" to test the four colors corresponding to the cartridges (black, yellow, cyan, and magenta). The machine printed out the Print Quality Check Sheet. This sheet showed a square pattern in each color. If all small lines were c…

Whenever I try to view files with windows explorer, it is extremely slow (greater than five minutes) to open up and display the contents of the C: drive or "my computer." This is happening with applications as well when they do a search. If I open Word, I can open quickly a document in the default location but once I try to go to a different folder it takes five minutes to find the next drive or folder. Oddly other application don't stop working. It is only when it is looking up a directory. Similarly, if I try to find imaging devices in the control panel it takes about five minutes to find the scanner. I don't know if this is related as other comp…

basidv32 missing
by Guest ralphs- 10 replies

AVG removed a virus from my neighbor's XP Home laptop. Upon reboot the machine stopped with white text on a dark blue screen saying basidv32 could not be found. Same result in Safe Mode, Safe with no networking and Safe command line. He doesn't have his XP CD. It is at his home far away. I searched the web for references to basidv32 and none were found. What is basidv32? How do I get it? How do I load it on a machine which won't boot?

Before reformat C:\, save system volume information ?
by Guest RobF- 7 replies

Create restore point before reformat, after removing previous points, save the files to another drive, then reformat? Would the system accept the saved restore point when copied to the new C:\? Thus, reinstalling apps would be unnecessary. Is this proceedure workable? TIA, any comments. -- RobF Address anti-spammed
