Re: Windows Defender Defenition 1.35.716.0 failed to install. [Crossposted to Windows Update, WinXP General, and Security newsgroups] I have reproduced this problem (error 0x80070643). Users may encounter this problem when updating Defender via Automatic Update, Windows Update, or from within Defender (Check for updates function). NB: Defender will NOT be happy and its "Alert!" icon will continue to appear in Notification Area until an update is successfully installed. This does NOT mean that Defender is not working/protecting your machine. I have alerted MS and the Defender team to this apparent bug via private channels. -- ~Robear Dyer (PA Bea…

Re: Computer Crashed

Re: Computer Crashed My Computer crashed last week. I took it to Staples where they did a diagnostic test and determined the motherboard is dying. I spent a little over $200 back in December to fix another problem and just spent $55.00 for this test. The tech person suggested they can send it out to have the mother board replaced and the rest would be checked and replaced all new parts if necessary and this would cost $250.00 total including all necesary parts and shippping back and forth. The computer is about five years old and has xp home edition. He told me that Microsoft was going to keep servicing XP until 2014. I had heard it was stopping …

I helped my friend rebuild his XP system. Now XP SP2 is installed from scratch. The Network card shows up in Network Connections but there is no LAN. Earthlink customer service could not help. So we have no Internet connection. He has DSL with Earthlink's supplied DSL modem. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks.

Restart Problem

Just wondering if an Windows Update might be causing the following problem; Just reinstalled XP and have finished taking all the updates... now when you go to "Restart" the computer it hangs at 'Windows is shutting' and will not restart. No problems with normal "Shutdown" Shut downs correctly and then turns back on normally. Any known issues with possibly one of the updates that might cause this "Restart" issue. Sincerely would appreciate any suggestions. Many Thanks!!! MAK

Has anyone tried to use the free support chat for SP3? No matter which browser I use (including IE 7.0), the person on the other end never appears to be able to see anything I type, although it appears to send the message and I can see everything the other person is typing.

(The following problem is on Windows XP Professional.) I have a problem with Windows Movie Maker 2.1.4026.0. When I import audio/music, I can't hear it. I've checked all the volume options, and everything seems fine. For some reason, the imported audio/music is silent. What should I do?

Windows Explorer Keyboard Navigation

Ok, so my old login profile got corrupted, and I made a new one and copied over what I could from the old profile. I've had to fix a lot of settings, but one I can't seem to fix is for Windows Explorer. Before, whenever I opened an explorer window (say, My Computer for example) the file browser would be selected by default and I could type to navigate immediately (I could type L for Local Hard drive, or M for My Documents). But now, I have to click on the file area of the window to select it first before I can navigate by typing like that. Does anyone know how to fix this? -- Seilen

Hi, I am trying to execute some remote scripts through telnet, and I did U:> http://www.mysite.com/calculate.php This doesn't work though. This is what it brought back: 'http' is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file. I then tried to telnet it, and then found out that it brought back Could not open connection to the host, on post 23: Connect failed. I had both servers, the local and the remote with port 23 opened on TCP. Could there be anything I missed? Thanks in advance.

Java Question

Don't know where to start looking for answsers so I am starting here. I have recently been having a lot of problems with getting those nasty little red "x"s instead of pictures or graphics in e mails or in online games etc. One game site support page article indicated it might be a problem with my Java Runtime program and suggested I might not have the latest version. In checking my computer, I find that I do have program files for Java listed but they don't seem to be working. When I go to my Control Panel and double click on the Java Icon, it tells me that I am missing a registry key. I know I should probably be looking for answers on the Jav…

Hello, I recently acquired a new IBM ThinkPad series R61. They come standard with the widescreen ( I do not like). I typically arrange my icons around the perimeter by categories. Eith my old laptop this was not an issue. However, everytime I undock, turn off change settings for dual monitor or use of a projector my icons move around. I have tried various settings including lock desktop items in the wep page set up and nothing seems to help. Thanks for your help. -- Dharma Diaz-Azcuy

Hi there, My XP screensaver kicks in automatically after 10 minutes. The screensaver never shows but instead just the background screen appears. I am unable to return to a login prompt with tapping control-alt-delete. I have to power the machine off and back on again. What can I do to get the screen saver to work well again? Cheers, Noah
