Help me please!
by Guest Still Learning- 3 replies

This is REALLY irking me! My dad's computer is a Dell running XP with IE7.about 1 year old. It has Windows Defender running, but somehow malware/spyware got in there anyway. It had gotten to the point where it would ONLY boot in safe mode, and it took about one hour to do that! Well I corrected that with Combofix...and the computer is running fast again. But every time you go from one webpage to another...you get an ad page first! It looks like this: Insecure Internet activity. Threat of virus attack Due to insecure Internet browsing your PC can easily get infected with viruses, worms and trojans without your knowledge, and that can lead to system slo…

LONG delay when saving a shortcut with IE
by Guest _DD- 9 replies

What is the cause of the long delay in saving an IE shortcut? This happens only after a few IE windows are open, or when at least one IE window is open for a length of time. For that reason, I suspect a problem with some local 'resource' that is getting depleted. This occurs on systems with lots of ram, so it's not directly related to main memory allocation. Closing -ALL- IE windows seems to fix this, so there's some base that stays alive for all IE windows. (Any way to change this?) I'd post some system configs, but I've seen this on several systems now, and it seems to occur independent of hardware. Again, it seems more related to the length of time that a…

Hi, Since a short time the fan in my laptop runs at full speed, just few minutes after power on. This was not the case before, but i have 'played' with some temperature monitor programs and maybe one of those programs has change the fanspeed settings. (??) Is that possible? I removed all those programs and also the names in the registry... => no result. What else can i do? It's a MAXDATA laptop, type ECO 4011 IW. TIA S.

Not sure what's causing this - ...tearing hair out now ! This is Dad's PC in the house - and the one that my nieces also use !! I've been digging for hours :-( ...since this problem appeared I've installed SP3, re-registered the *.dll's that prevent further Windows updates, cleared out TIF and temporary folders. ....have tried switching off Spybot S&D, AVG 8.0, ZA and Windows Defender !! ...STILL I can't save a small file such as MVP hosts to etc directory, i.e. it downloads fast | stops at 99%, and then hangs. Have tried downloading it to a different folder and saving it under a different name in case a security prog. somewhere is interfering…

Critical updates for non-existent MS Office 2007!
by Guest Jeff@unknown.com- 4 replies
This has to do with Windows XP critical update notifications, not Office. I installed MS Office 2007 and because I did not like it, I uninstalled it and went back to my older office version. After the uninstall I rebooted as required. Just now I booted up my PC and because I receive automatic update warnings I noticed the yellow exclamation mark shield and when I opened it I saw it had 3 security updates - all of which were for "Microsoft Office System 2007" - which is no longer installed on my PC! I know I can tell MS update to hide these but my question what is left on my PC that makes MS think I still have Office 2007 installed when I do not? And…

Corrupted Files

I have two MS Word files, one in a doc file and the other in a wbk, that I can neither open nor delete. When I try to delete, open, or copy over these files, I get a message that the procedure is prohibited because the file name and path are too long or because the path does not exist and that I should remap that Network drive; the file reside on HDD C and is in a two folders down in the My Documents folder. I have a copy of this file on a USD HDD and would like to erase both of these files, but wonder if anyone knows how I could do this. I have tried and cannot copy over either of these files. The condition of these files prevents copying and backing-up the My D…
