Processes won't close
by Guest Fenley Crunchwhistle- 8 replies

Many applications when closed normally still appear in Task Manager. Some exhibit this behavior all the time, some only sometimes. For example, SysInternals Process Explorer and Vegas Pro 8 seem to never close properly and show an additional process in Process Explorer with every launch/exit. This is not application-specific behavior. I have XP 2002 SP3. Norton 360 with latest signatures finds no viruses or spyware. Windows Update finds no updates for my computer. Thanks

Main Installation of Windows XP
by Guest Moogleez- 1 reply

I am currently running an Intel Celeron 566 Mhz with a 40 gig harddrive and 256 mg ram. It had Windows XP on it before i owned it and so I figured formatting and reinstalling Windows XP would erase any or all imformation they would have had on this pc. My problem however is with the installation of Windows XP itself. It will not run the 2nd phase of the installation process. I honestly have no idea what could be causing this so any help is great. Please refer to : http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/setup/winxp/install.mspx for the installation guide Thank You, Moogleez

DNS Server Settings in Windows XP
by Guest Snapper- 1 reply

I have fixed or static IP addressing for my home network. It also has user entered IP addresses for the modem router as the gateway and DNS servers. In my DSL modem there is a setting to enter DNS server addresses manually or to auto detect them based on the ISP's servers. I have it set to the latter. A guy from the ISP suggested that on the computer instead of using the ISP assigned addresses for DNS to point the computer to the gateway address. ie. Gateway address and DNS server address are now the same at 192.168.1.254. I've done this and it seems to be working OK, but if there is any performance increase I can't pick it. What advantages would there be…

USB external hard disk problem
by Guest Rick- 2 replies
Had several 2.5 and 3.5 external hard disks plus a memory stick that plugged into the USB ports on my laptop. They have all now come up as unknown devices. I think XP does not need drivers for these but I cant get it to recognise them. Fairly sure it is not a hardware problem (happens on all ports). Re-installed Service Pack 2 - no change. Went to re-install manufactureres recovery disk for XP Home which said that my existing version is newer than that on the recovery disk - I assume because of subsequent iinstallation of SP 2. Do I have to re-install XP Home regardless ? Does anyone know how I can get XP to recognise these drives please, as I am slowly …

I am running XP Pro V5.1-SP2. I have used this PC on this network for several years. All of a sudden, I cannot save to the network hard drive. It is mapped as H:, and when I open it in My Computer it says that it is 1.0GB and full, despite actually having about 87gb of free space. I can read perfectly from it, but I cannot save to it - it says it is full. About 12 other users are on this network, and none have this problem. It occurred suddenly and I do not know of any event that happened that would have precipitated this. Please Help!!!

Usually on my other PC, when I do this , the power LED blinks and I can resume it by pressing the power button. Hi, this question is rather OT here but its hardware stuff, so maybe someone can help me out in solving this because i have a serious problem on my Windows XP System: After rebooting the system, all my USB devices are rejected from the System after plugging them into a USB slot with the Popup "Unidentified USB device". I removed any USB device entry, even roothub and all usb stuff from the Device Managers Treenodes, rebootet, reinstalled all hardware drivers (installed automatically from system itelsf), rebooted again, plugged my WLAN stick on and got the same message after saying that it was successflly installed and is ready to use. Disk Cleanup function
by Guest alanpp- 4 replies
Generally I try to run the Disk Cleanup feature along with all my other maintenance (defrag, spyware sweeps, backup) once a week. This week I went in to run the Disk Cleanup function (which normally takes no more than a few minutes) and it does not seem to want to complete. The popup tells me that the utility is on "Compress old files" but it never gets beyond that. Literally two hours later it is still on "Compress old files". Since there is no feedback in the popup, no indication of what it is trying to compress or even if it is actually working, I was hoping someone could give me an idea as to what I can do to either discover what the holdup is, or…

Managing Pairs of Web pages and folders
by Guest 5tulips- 3 replies

Windows XP In Folder Options there are three choices for "Managing pairs of Web pages and folders." They are: - show and manage the pair as a single file - show both parts and manage them individually - show both parts but manage as a single file. What does this mean? Does it have anything to do with creating or maintaining a web? Or is it something we do in Windows in general? There is nothing in Windows Help files on this subject.

SAfe To Remove Harware procedure
by Guest vince- 1 reply
AS I remember, everytime I went to remove plugged-harware, HP personal media drives, USB connected scanners, external floppies, etc., I needed to go through an icon in the Start-Up Task Bar to avoid getting a warning message. Last week, suddenly the icon was no longer there. Was there an update recently which removed the necessity to do this, or am I now performing an unsafe procedure by just disconnecting? Anyone hear of a change lately or is there a file or start up task I need to re-insert? Thanks -- vince

Reloaded XP home -- now some problems
by Guest Moi- 2 replies
Hello all I recently had to wipe my disk and reload. I have a very old XP Home recovery disk, and have left automatic updates on. Here are my questions 1 I seem to be getting odd copied folders appearing within other folders. Reason? 2 I use Outlook 2000 (yes, I know its old but I like it and it has always been great fo me). But now I notice postings in newsgroups are slow to marked 'read'. This used to be instantaneous. Reason? 3 How can I see what Sps have been automatically applied? 4 What are the "horror stories" with SP3 that I've seen mentioned. 5 How can I arrange to be warned when an update wishes to be uploaded? Than…
