update.exe and updspapi.dll?
by Guest Bruce.- 2 replies

XP Pro SP 3. On my brand new 1 TB USB drive, I now find 4 directories with 2 files in each. I'm not sure if they were there before I first plugged it in. The 4 directories names are: 1b1253bd34b0103908888234 1d7e8ea4d4783ee8daf76ad4e141 95c08cf91bdfc4531fe365ffd8ab a6e5c9229954c913b0d331aa5cd527 Each one has a subdirectory "update" and it contains these 2 files: 05/25/2006 10:29 AM 716,000 update.exe 05/25/2006 10:29 AM 371,424 updspapi.dll A search of the web turns up little information and my virus scanner calls them clean. Anyone know what they are and why I have 4 bizarre directory names with these files in them? …

Change Windows Product key prior to activation
by Guest TKMarshall- 6 replies

Can anyone offer guidance? I have two licensed copies of Windows XP Home, one of which is on a damaged disk...a fact I became aware of when I recently swapped out a dead pc. Long story short I currently have two machines loaded from the same XP install disk. Assuming this will eventually cause problems, I have tried to update the product key during telephone activation per Knowledgebase article 810892 but the activation routine will not accept the change. I have also tried to use the windows KeyUpdateTool with equal lack of success. Any thoughts before I punt and go to Linux?

Folders That Contain System Restore Points?
by Guest Will- 3 replies
I realize that system restore points in Windows XP are stored in folders that only the SYSTEM account can reach. But I would still like to know where are those folders located. One of my systems is completely missing its system, system32, and repair folders. I'm trying to determine before I begin a long recovery procedure whether it is even going to be possible to get a recent system state recovered. If the system restore folders have also been deleted, then obviously it is hopeless. -- Will

Can you restore the system state under Windows XP to an alternate path on the file system without affecting the system state of the computer during the restore? I simply need to grab the files from a system state backup and copy those over to a crashed system. -- Will

network storage device permissions

I have a network storage device (more specifically a BuffaloTech LinkStation) and a PC with Windows MCE 2005: I like it but whenever I connect an external USB drive to it I can only read/execute whats on the drive (NOT the internal drive to the linkstation BUT the drive that's connected to the linkstations usb ports), I can't move, delete, or rename files/folders (or even create a new file) but i can seem to copy files to the device. Under LinkStation settings, I have shared folders for the USB drive: Shared folder support: Windows, ftp, backup Shared folder attributes: read/write recycle bin disabled access restrictions enabled (with proper username…

Strange... CDROM not reading exe and dll files, others fine
by Guest Sean Schult- 2 replies

Greetings folks, Usually the issues I run into can be solved with a little searching, trial and error, and plenty of mountain dew. This one however has me stumped -- and I beg the assistance of anyone who can help me get to the bottom of it. Upon a fresh reinstall of WinXP Pro on the computer in question (core 2 duo 2.4ghz on an Asus P5W-DH Deluxe), the CDROM (a Lite-On DVD+/-RW w/ lightscribe, connected as PATA bus 0 device 0/master and jumped accordingly) will no longer read executables from inserted discs. Upon inserting a disc, the drive's title under "My Computer" changes but the icon does not update. It attempts to autorun and fails with a "The…

I apologize if this question has been asked before but I have a Dell Laptop PC with XP Service Pack 2-Version 2002. I have 32.7 GB of used space with only 1.46 remaining GB. I have moved all pics and music to a USB drive and have decreased the allotted space for system restore, recycle bin, etc. as well as uninstalling all unused programs. I had noticed that my pc was always trying to install windows updates but it always failed. Any suggestions?

Backup strategy to hard drive bigger than original
by Guest spamlet- 8 replies

This may sound like a pretty basic question, but I've hung on to various threads around the topic for a while, but still have a few points to clear up. Have XPPro on a nearly full 40gig internal drive, and recently bought 2 MyBook 500gig externals. Despite reading around, I still got a surprise to find there was only a usb port on the back of the drives, so I won't be plugging one in to my router after all... so I want to minimise the chances of any further c ' ups. The way I see it, the sensible thing to do would be to divide the new drives into sections (drives? partitions?): a section, maybe the same size as the original drive, to clone the operat…

A few days ago I booted up in safe mode and deleted the following index.dat files: %userprofile%\Cookies\index.dat %userprofile%\local settings\History\History.IE5\index.dat %userprofile%\local settings\temporary internet files \Content.IE5\index.dat Windows has not yet recreated those files. Is this something to be concerned about?

Cannot boot Dell laptop
by Guest RipperT- 2 replies

Dell inspiron B130 laptop XP Home. Installed AVG free to get rid of some viruses. AVG asked if I want to force removal of one of them and I clicked yes. Now no reboot. Even in safe mode, the windows startup screen displays, but then BSOD with message: stop: c0000135 {unable to locate component} This application has failed to start because basewhlw32 was not found. Re-installing the application may fix this problem. I've Googled basewhlw32 and it returns nothing. I've put in an XP Pro disc to do repair install, and windows setup comences, but when it says it's starting windows, another familiar BSOD: A problem has been detected and windows has been sh…
