Putting XP on my 3rd harddrive
by Guest Jeepwolf- 12 replies

I presently have 2 hard drives partitioned into 6 partitions. I really do not like XP, but there seems to be a few newer programs that will not run on 98 anymore. I unplugged both of my hard drives abd installed XP on another blank hard drive. In order to use it, I have to unplug my Win98 drives and plug in the XP drive. What would happen if I plugged in the 3rd drive and initially booted to DOS (which I do anyhow). Could I just swap to this 3rd drive and start XP? (I have that drive as a FAT32). I dont know how to setup a dual boot, and it looks far too complicated to setup. Besides that, I do not want XP loaded at all, 95% of the time. I know I w…

*I have a WIN98 , HP Brio , its graphics card has got issues and causing me grief . My desktop icons are huge and animated , when I try and change them back and do a reboot as recommended when I get the screen back it tells me my display adapter is not configured correctly or not working , which takes me to a page about installing or correcting the problem by re-installing and rebooting , its a vicious circle of cycles that do not work . I went to my adapter info and it has an exclamation mark on the icon . I have a KM 133 from pro savage card , I think its onboard as well , not sure about that tho , was told by a tech in town that it was . This all come about wh…

Entered data is not retained 1 2

I had a previous recent thread relating to the problem: "Save password in DUN". I have used this desktop machine for about 6 months, an AV check showed nothing. The machine has been otherwise normal. Data in files is edited, saved, retained normally. Scandisk shows a normal hard disk. I can dial up, but when I run my browser, at every one of my usual bookmarked sites, get "Server Not Found". In Control Panel/Internet Connections, Properties, the DUN icon, in domain, I had originally set it correctly, now it shows mail.copper.ne :it is supposed to be net. I reentered the correct mail.copper.net, closed that screen. Reopened the Properties screen, ag…

I have a ten year old computer with the following characteristics: 300 MHz Intel P11 CPU 320 megs ram Win 98SE 4 MHz cable connection Host file active SpywareBlaster AdAware ie-spyad ZoneAlarm AVAST! antivirus And many other apps not on my startup list. I keep all of the protection apps up to date. I scan disk and defrag regularly. My question/problem: My computer seems to be getting slower. When I click on a high content URL like MSNBC, NYT, Wash Post ,Yahoo! or eBay, it seems to take typically as much as 30 seconds to load completely - sometimes as much as one minute. While this is not a huge problem, time was when a page would load in a s…

I recently upgraded to a 1600 x 1200 monitor and discovered that my mouse cursors were bit small. I tried the extra large cursors but they were less than ideal. Searching on the net I found some free cursors at http://qjc.cjb.net/ that were pretty good. The set included some following basic shapes of the windows set but bolder and much easier to see. They were just right for my purposes.

Completely ignorant re network setup

Have two computers (physically side by side) on cable. One new Vista which I assume is the "master" if there is such a thing. Other is running Win98se. SE has "Davidcom 9102 PCI Fast Ethernet Adapter" which is connecting to the router (linksys wireless-G). It is wireless as there is another SE computer "upstairs" to be connected sometime? SE also has "Dial up adapter" that is X'ed off and "Existing Ndis2 Driver" that is "!'ed. Would like to be able to share/transfer files between the Vista and SE machines. Both computers work fine on the internet! However I have been leaving the SE machine disconnected from the router as it does not presently h…

I'm cross-posting this to the Win98 General Discussion group, since this Windows Updates group is not well attended. Display loads at 640x480 res & cant change
by Guest Gary- 19 replies

Win 98se with SIS 530 display hardware version 163, driver dated 4-14-1999. On boot sometimes the display comes up at 640x480. Going to settings, display, settings, the resolution bar is stuck at the low resolution! Can't change it without rebooting (sometimes several times) before the resolution bare is unstuck and resolution can be reset to 1024x768 with no problem. Things are then ok for several boots! Checked SIS site and there is a new driver version 1.08 dated 2002-11-14. Using a HP vs17e flat panel display. Any chance the new driver will fix or cause more troubles?

Posted this over on Velocity but got no response! Have been chasing this problem for some time. Found an old Win note that indicates it might be a memory problem. Have reduced the amount of useable memory from 312 meg to 64 meg to try. Any one have any more info on this problem? Would appreciate any suggestions as to what to try. Thanks

"Port already open" problem

I've installed Win98SE on an HP Pavilion A656X computer, ASUS A7V8X-LA (Kelut) motherboard. I have an external serial Diamond Supra 56e Pro modem on the onboard COM1 socket. I use it in both DOS and Windows. Here is the problem, which I've never had with my previous ISA modems: The modem works properly under raw MS-DOS or in a Windows DOS session, using the Qmodem terminal program. The modem works properly with a Windows DUN connection if it has not been used under Qmodem in a DOS session in Windows before starting DUN. But if Qmodem has been run and exited before I then attempt to connect in Windows via DUN, the DUN window pops up a…
