Skype vs. Net2Phone
by Guest mm- 16 replies

The download page for Skype says that it works on win2000 and XP, it might even say you must have one of those, but does that mean for sure that a program written for 2000/xp won't run on win98SE or WinME? Also Google Earth says that and so I didn't install it, but maybe I should have tried, if there is some chance it would run. Could it do any damage to install one of these where it wasn't designeed to go? If I can't do this, does anyone know if Net2Phone (which does work on winme and 98SE) can be used to call Skype commputers?

Problems with NetScrape 7.2
by Guest Robert Baer- 2 replies

Now it was a bitch to get it to work at all, musch less as well as it is working now. The problem was that i had loaded FireFox, which diddles operation of both. And as everyone knows, "uninstall" *never* removes everything. Uninstalled both, used major surgery on the HD and the registry, and Netscape still refused to work - with some icons showing as FireFox. Uninstalled again, and ripped out Java runtime and Java web. For umpteenth time, installed Netscape but used custom to prevent installation of java stuff. Now it works, except.. 1) Cannot post a (new) message Subject "test " and body "test" (no quotes either one without getting ALE…

Upgrgrading windows 98 Second Editon to XP
by Guest Joe- 2 replies

I have an HP Pavilion desktop that came with Windows 98 Second Edition. I had upgraded to XP about two years ago. About one month ago my system kept restarting by itself. I installed my system recovery disks to reformat my hard drive. After re formating my hard drive, my copy of XP will not download. I keep on getting error messages that the program has performed and illegal operation and will be shut down, or missing dll. Any suggestions? -- Joe S.

How to unlock a flash card?
by Guest ms- 2 replies
At the moment, in W2K, want to transfer files to a W98 computer. Tere has been several threads here on flash cards. Up to now, had no trouble (W2K) loading a flash card, unlocking it, transferring to a W98 machine, loading and then unlocking there. In W98SE, I used the universal W98 driver from a post by glee, it works fine. Today, loaded 1.9GB on a Sony 2 GB flash card, got the message "disk full", I said Cancel and checked contents, looks like everything is there. Next I went into the Unlock sequence, usually it is maybe a 1 minute max delay, but this time it still does not unlock in 30 minutes. Tried rebooting, no luck. I suppose this is relat…

Save password in DUN
by Guest ms- 13 replies

It's been years since I've done this, forgot past data. I created a DUN, can dial up, but the save password entry is greyed out, so even after a sucessful connection, the next time I have to reenter data. In the network setup screen, I had selected Windows logon as IIRC I always did, but read in an old tip file that I need "Client for Microsoft Networks" to save the password. Advice? ms

unable to connect to internet
by Guest Buck- 6 replies
My dad just had his computer worked on, and now cannot get on the internet. I tried unplugging the cable box, and checking for incorrectly plugged in wires. He has Windows 98. I called Cox Communications, and they told me they no longer can trouble shoot that operating system, and gave me the microsoft number to call. That lady told me to come to this support address and see if someone can help. Any ideas? I am just a user not a techy, so it is going to have to be simple answers to get this fixed.

Boot problems
by Guest lb- 4 replies
This has happened twice now in the last 2 weeks. Computer tries to boot and get XMS driver errors. Also himem.sys and emm386 not loading. Sometime I can get to a blank windows desktop but am usually stuck in DOS. If I do get to the windows desktop, there is a message about no mouse found. In all of the failed boots, there is no mouse or keyboard loaded in DOS or windows so I cannot do anything but push the reset button. After probably close to 10 restarts, it boots up and runs like nothing was ever wrong. A boot disk does not help. I am virus and spyware/malware free. This computer is 5 years old, but the hard drive is newer. Any help appreciated.

by Guest Rod- 1 reply

Newbie. Just purchased a P3 clone for $10 and intend to try and load W98se. mobo = Gigabyte tech GA-7Zx Rev 1.0 I have downloaded all drivers and manual which I havn't read yet. I wonder if it is difficult to install the mobo driver? are there easy steps to follow in this regard? As this is a 2001 mobo is it worth a risk to upgrade the bios? Thanks.

Unable to boot/start win98 computer 1 2 3
by Guest LewB- 55 replies

I am trying to rescue some old files from a computer that has Win98 SE as the OS. The computer did function until recently and I obviously did something wrong. Now when I power up this error message immediately comes on: "CPU is unworkable or has been changed. Please recheck-CPU SOFT MENU Press F1 to continue, DEL to enter SETUP Award Modular BIOS v4.5lPG, An Energy Star Ally Pentium III CPU at 300 MHz" If I go into CMOS via DEL there is a CPU SOFT MENU II but there is nothing there to effect a change; only lists the CPU operating Speed and power supply. If I click the F1 button the computer goes to the brief Windows welcome scree…
