USB driver?
by Guest Robert Baer- 11 replies

I have an old system, a VIA P4PB400-FL motherboard, and have the CD that came with it. But that CD only has audio drivers, no USB drivers. I do not know how that problem was initially solved ages ago. I am trying to re-install from scratch (new, larger HD), and all works except in the device manager, i get a ? with USB controller device associated with this wonderful icon. Trying properties, install driver, i get text it is looking for USBECHI.SYS from disk "Windows9X USB 2.0(ECHI) Driver Disk for VIA". The Win98 CD, the VIA CD, and other 3rd party CDs all fail to satisfy this. Help???

User Name in Dialer (Dial-Up connection)
by Guest Brad- 2 replies

Hi, I know how to change the phone number in the Dialer (dial-up internet) via properties, but the only way I know how to change the User name in the Dialer and have it "stick" (saved) is to actually connect to the internet. Do you know of a way without me connecting? Thanks in advance, Brad Before you type your password, credit card number, etc., be sure there is no active keystroke logger (spyware) in your PC.

Need DRIVER DETECTIVE
by Guest justme_jim@nospam.com- 1 reply

Years ago I downloaded and installed a shareware called "Driver Detective". Back then it was from a company called Monkeysoft. I'm not quite sure how I got a registered version after all these years. The version I have is 2.0.13. I just decided to upgrade the program and was prepared to pay the cost because I have been having some driver problems that need to be fixed. I ended up going to http://www.drivershq.com. I assume this company either took over, or changed their name. (I dont see any history on their site). I was ready to download the trial when I noticed it said will not work with Win98, or anything below Win2K. They do not have any of their olde…

Unknown Devices in control panel
by Guest larry@invalid.com- 2 replies

This is 98se. I keep getting Unknown Devices in control panel / system. I removed them, and keep getting asked to set up drivers everytime I boot up, and have to repeatedly hit CANCEL everytime I boot up. I just reinstalled windows on top of what was there, so I would not lose my settings and programs. Now they are back with the yellow error markers. How the heck am I supposed to know what they are when they just say "Unknown Device"? This is most irritating. Thanks Larry

OT, hopefully interesting

I'll be giving a couple of mp3 players as gifts for Christmas, but I want to upgrade the firmware first, since the kids are not really into that sort of thing. I'll be doing it from a Windows computer - does it matter that they run Macs? Note that after they get these they may elect to download the "MediaSource" program from Creative (supported by both OS's), which interacts with the player.

MSGSRV32 is Not Responding
by Guest equestrian42@invalid.com- 3 replies

The last week or so my computer seems to just suddenly stop for awhile. Sometimes as long as a minute or so. When I do CTRL ALT DEL I get an error message saying MSGSRV32 is not Responding. If I close it, everything works fine, except when I shutdown the computer locks up so I have to just shut it off. Anyone have any ideas what's going on? I'm running Win98SE on a 1ghz P3. 380 (something) Ram No detected viruses or spyware. Harddrive is not fragmented and checks ok with scandisk. Everything else works fine.

Are mouse/keyboard on COM1? (vjp2)
by Guest Vasos Panagiotopoulos- 5 replies

On a 1995 GW2K p5-75, I had the modem on COM4 for ten years, I never really used the other comm ports. I somehow had the impression the ps/ 2 were COM1. (Doesn't make total sence, I know) I think I only could find the COM2 connection, that's why I thought this. Ok, why now? Because I realised the reason W98 (dual boot with win3.11/ DOS6.22) never saw the SCM Smart Card I was able to use from DOS was becaus eof IRQ. I played with IRQ and I lost the com4 modem. Restart to pure DOS and the modem is fine. But I've also never been able to connect a Palm pilot to COM2, nor a camera. No, wait, I did once connect another (horrible) camera to Win98 but I hadn't told Wi…

Starts booting then h/w switches off
by Guest John- 1 reply

I have an HP desktop system for many years and ISTR it has a Pentium 400 processor with a 40GB HDD and I run Win98 on it. The configuration I've got has run for years. But recently something seems to have happened. Now I find that when I boot, the BIOS startup seems ok and then my bootmanager starts. I use "BootIt" and it lives in a tiny partition at the end of the hard drive. But after about a minute (during which I see only a blank screen) the system switches itself off. Can I refresh the system files on the hard drive by using the Win98SE cd? It's been so long since I'v had to deal with this that I would welcome any useful tips or things to…

Installers
by Guest 33223- 1 reply

Installers Each device within the wireless network (computer, printers, auxiliaries) must be installed with a Network Interface Card, or NIC. The NIC transmits wireless signals from the access device and enables each device in the network to send and receive signals. Installers must also decide which of three industry standards by which to designate to the network. These industry standards are 802.11a, 802.11b, and 802.11g -- these names differing only in the last letter. The "a" standard is the least common and incompatible with "b" and "g." The b standard is most common. The g standard enables more robust digital downloading, and can support with b. The b …

by Guest CdLSRN- 0 replies

lately everytime I try to turn on my computer (the first time) it goes to safe mode and tells me to go to control and make sure everything is right. I make some changes Dell XPST450, win 98se, last downloaded item = latest Adobe Reader (since I was having a lot of trouble printing postage from usps.com. I disconnected all my USB plugs and then was able to connect normally. I had a Hub connected (I had unplugged everything from the hub) and a HP Photosmart picture printer.
