by Guest Andrew Story- 4 replies

Hello all, I have a file on a Win2k server that looks to have a very long file name and be buried under a lagre amount of subfolder. When I try to delete it nothing happens, when I try to view it's properties I get the message: "the properties for this item are not available" So, I'm unable to move/rename/delete the file, any ideas?

Virtual server R2 sp1 and ntbackup
by Guest Jeff S.- 1 reply

On the Virtual server host I schedule NTbackups for the guests. I do not shutdown or save the state on the virtual guests as I thought SP1 supports this method of guest backups. The ntbackup job backs up the folders where the *.vhd, *.vnc and *.vsv files are located. The ntbackup jobs finish successfully, however I get the following message in the virtual server event viewer when the ntbackup begins: The VSS writer failed to get the properties of the virtual machine "virtual machine name". The virtual machine is allowed for Offline backup only. I noticed that this message only occurs for 2003 guests, the 2000 guests do not produce this message. C…

File Advice

I have posted this in the Excel forum but no joy. I was wondering if you guys had any ideas relating to this We have an excel spreadsheet on a network drive. One user accesses it in the head office and other accesses it over VPN connections. Sometimes when people access it and someone else has it open they don't get the popup to say that it is already open. Is there some setting for this that needs altering on the file? Also why would you get disk full errors when you try and save changes although their are no quotas or limits for any user?

Is there a centralized way to turn off simple file sharing in all workstations in a domain? I've tried to look for it in group policy, but couldn't find one that applies. We use W2K3 and all clients use WinXP Pro. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks! -Jerry

Massive Service Failure

I have a 2003 SP1 application server that is very unhappy right now... (It has been running for about two years without any incident, and there has been no changes other than Windows Updates.) When booting up the server, I now get the message that says at least one service failed to start, and I should check the event log... However, all of the event logs fail to display because my Event Log service will not run. When I look at my services, I have a large number that will not start. Most complain that the dependency service or group failed to start. If I view the properties of the service and try to look at the dependency tab, I again get the mes…

Windows 2003 R2 - Add Device CALS
by Guest Ian Zahn- 4 replies

Just a quick and easy one. I have a windows 2003 R2 domain controller, the only one in the domain. I have bought more device cals but not sure how to add them. I go to admin tools and select licensing, but it says the licensing server isn't running. I did read some where that windows 2003 turns this off. I noticed in the service (License Logging) is disabled - is this correct? If I start this service I can add windows server or back office So where do I add the extra device cals? Thanks

Security Log won't hold changes
by Guest lminegishi- 2 replies

Hey Guys, I've got a rather annoying problem right now. One of the 2003 servers we're running will not keep the event log overwrite settings when changed. Currently it is set to the default of overwrite after 7 days and it is getting filled up after about 3 days. I change it to overwrite as needed, apply/ok the change, go back in and it's still marked; but if I log out and back in as the same user, then check it, it reverts back to the old setting. Anyone ever seen this before? If so, have any insight for a resolution? Thanks for all your help!!
