Taking DC Offline Temporarily
by Guest N. Cassadine- 2 replies

Hello, I have a Win2k3 (Sp2) Domain Controller that is going to be moved to a new location. I expect it to be down for at least 10 days. Is there anything I need to do (if anything) either on the domain side or on the domain controller itself so the DC being offline for so long won't cause me problems when I bring it back online? Thanks.

"The data area passed to a system call is too small" when creating a directory or file I am trying to create a directory on the server, from the server and receive the following error message: "the data area passed to a system call is too small". I receive the same error message if XP clients attempt to do the same thing. The server is 2003 and nothing stands out in the event log. Anyone have any ideas?

Security event log parsing
by Guest Mark Scholl- 3 replies

I have a Bank client where the examiners have requested that the security event log be dumped, printed and reviewed daily for events showing user login and logout events. They have only one domain controller. Event ID's 538 and 540 appear to be the events I would like to filter. However, There are many events from the system user that I would like to exclude using these event ID's. I've looked at PSLogList from the PSTools suite but I don't find a switch to exclude the events from the system user. Any easy options? mark scholl

Scheduled task not running
by Guest Ben Amada- 2 replies

Hi, I setup a scheduled task today on a Windows 2003 Server machine to run a simple command line utility. I want it to run every hour every day. I'm able to right click on the task and select "Run" and it runs successfully. The problem is that the task only runs when I manually start it, and is not running on the schedule. The schedule is: Every 1 hour(s) from 12:00 AM for 23 hour(s) every day, starting 8/22/2007. I originally tried just setting it to repeat the task until 11:00 PM, but the task scheduler keeps changing it back to a 23 hour duration -- which I think is the same result and it appears to not be a problem since the "Next Run Time" c…

Bare Metal Windows 2000 DC
by Guest Del- 2 replies

I need to restore a currently working Dell Windows 2000 single DC server to another new Dell or HP server before it goes TU. No tape drive available - prefer not to shut the DC down to install a SCSI card. USB is working to external hard disk. The new server will replace the old. What is the best proven way? Acronis Universal Restore / True Image? Install W2K on new server and promote to backup DC then decomission the original DC and resinstall the apps? Restore an NT backup and hope the new server boots until I can get the new drivers installed? Other better ideas? Thanks much for any ideas.

RE: Share permissions question Hi David, I have read every post you and David have posted re permissions i.e. parent and child inherient etc. I am not a newbie to the computer world but definitely not a Tech either:). My question is, my ex boyfriend (who works in the IT World) set up my computer. When I click properties---> security---> I have the usually Admin, My name etc, but there is a list so long, e.g. anonmyous user, remote access user, backup operator, etc. All these have full rights, meaning all the boxes are ticked. Could you please advise me if I have anything to worry about. Kind regards Lisa:) "David Davis" wrote: > Are your …

Help with CAL for Win2K3 Server
by Guest ScottD- 8 replies

I have just spent two hours on the phone with M$ bouncing from techs and customer support reps trying to find someone who can help me install this @#$%# 5-user CAL. This used to be easy. I have a properly activated Windows 2003 Server R2, Standard Edition. I ordered a Windows Client Access License for an additional 5 users. I got M$'s white cardboard envelope by UPS that only has a greenish slip of paper in it, no disk media. The paper says it is "genuine" and that it is the CAL I paid for. Cool so far. I go to "Server Management" tool, click "Licensing" and there is an "Add License" wizard link. The form that appears asks me whether to conne…

Local group => new server
by Guest Tom- 2 replies

Hi! I'm going to replace some member servers with new hardware, moving all data to the new server. The problem is, that all member servers have some local groups which are assigned NTFS rights on the disks. Now, I will copy the data to the new servers using robocopy, but this won't do much good unless I also find a way to migrate the local groups to the new servers. So, is there any way to copy/migrate local groups from a member (or stand alone) server to an other server? Thanks... - Tomppa -

Windows Server 2003 Logging
by Guest IshmaelDS- 9 replies

I need help finding a good log software. I have an issue with my 2k3 server that is not being caught by the event viewer. This server is running a Progress DB so I need it to be rather lightweight but fairly intensive as well. I'm not sure what the issue is, The system says it's rebooting but it doesn't reboot physically. When I log in it asks me why it shut down as it would from a unexpected shutdown and the event viewer says that it shut down but there are logs in the application viewer from seconds after the unextected shutdown and when i arrive at the server it's been less then 30 seconds and the system is back up with the DB's loaded. It's very odd. I…

VSS
by Guest Schmeg- 0 replies

Windows Server 2003 R2 SP2 with all patches to date. Prior to SP2, no issues. After SP2 some intermittent VSS issues during backup. BackupExec v11 fully updated fails on shadow copy components and system state using MS VSS sometimes, sometimes it backs up fine. When it fails I get a VolSnap Event ID 39 that states: When preparing a new volume shadow copy for volume C:, the shadow copy storage on volume F: could not be located in non-critical space. Consider using a shadow copy storage volume that does not have any shadow copies. I have tried moving the location of the shadow copy, by default it was on C:, I moved it to D: where I had 60G free spac…

Hi, I can't find a discussion group for Powershell, so i am trying my luck in this group. When i try to run Powershell command like "Get-WmiObject -Class Win32_ComputerSystemProduct -ComputerName serverA" against remote serverA, i received the error "Get-WmiObject : The RPC server is unavailable. (Exception from HRESULT: 0x800706BA)". The same command worked for some servers, but some other servers returned the exact same error as listed above. I have confirmed RPC is running on the source and target servers and there is no Firewall between the two machines. Appreciate your help and opinion on this problem i have. Thanks. -- Regards, James
