Unable tp create partition
by Guest JAG- 2 replies

I have an SBS2003 server with the following RAID 5 logical drive: C: 20Gb (System) D: 7Gb (VSC Storage) E: 96Gb (Data) F: 12Gb (Spec Data) I expanded the logical drive by adding another 72Gb hard drive. I can see the unallocated space in Disk Management, but the option to create a partition is greyed out. Research indicates that there is a 4 partition limit that I am up against. My question is, what are the consequences of deleting the D: partion? I assume that by deleting D: (which was never used) we would lose 7Gb of space, since it is not at the end of the drive. I can live with that as long as it would then allow us to create a ne…

Boot loop help needed.
by Guest Tom- 0 replies
Hi Our web server (Dell Server running 2003 Ent in a DMZ on it's own) has gone into a boot loop, it gets as far as the Server 2003 loading screen then blue screens and reboots, Safe Mode, LKGC etc do the same. Just to make things more difficult the server was built by my predecessor and they kept no record of the admin password so I can't get into recovery console. I'm trying to avoid having to reload it. Can anyone suggest a possible way of fixing the problem (are there any boot disks that give similar functionality as the recovery console), getting into recovery console or resetting the admin password? Thanks for you help Tom

We are in the process of evaluating our strategy for next year. We are running a W2K domain. I want to set a strategy that starts migrating off of the software. My major concerns are: 1) Can I add a W2008 member server to the domain w/o upgrading the domain? 2) Can a W2008 DC exist in a w2K domain? Anyone know the answers to this? -- Regards, Hank Arnold Microsoft MVP Windows Server - Directory Services

Good afternoon, my server is experiencing 100% CPU Usage. The Process "System". Windows Server 2003 Enterprise Edition, SP2, 8GB RAM. Roles "All AD Roles" plus File Server. 240 Users conected. All users are isolated on VLANs. If You disable all VLANs. The CPU goes down (of course). Them you start VLAN´s one by one, and CPU goes to 100. I have applied the instructions on http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/555041/en-us regards, Aquiles

File permissions change cripples server.
by Guest John Carlton- 3 replies

We have a Windows 2003 file server. We need to change the file permissions for one user on a directory structure that involves 1020 files in 49 folders. When we try to make the change, the server becomes completely unresponsive and workstations that have shared drives pointing to that server also become unresponsive. After waiting about 15 minutes, we have to reboot the server. What is the problem, and why are workstations affected?

Resizing drives...
by Guest Ross- 3 replies

Hi Everyone, Here is my situation, I have a windows 2003 server that has Two logical partitions one (system partition) that is 6 GB with only 10 mb free. The other one is 105 gb with 47 gb free. I need to take some from the second partition and give it back to the system partition. Making them dynamic will allow me to extend them, but how would I go about resizing them after making them dynamic. Or can this be done without making them dynamic? Thanks, Ross

Question about W2K3 Server and XP Clients Using Remote Desktop
by Guest Adam Sandler- 4 replies

Hello, I have a question about using mstsc.exe in a W2K3 and XP environment. With regard to the group policy, what are all the group policies which could affect remote connections? I have the allow logon interactively policy set but I still get an error which states I cannot logon to a given host when trying to use a remote desktop connection. I'm asking because there are literally hundreds of possible group policy settings. Does anyone know of a list of policies related to RDC and/ or terminal services? That would help troubleshooting and hunting an pecking through all the policy options. Thanks!

Server Logins
by Guest pf- 1 reply

This is a question I'm hoping I will get some good input on. For all of our servers we create a generic AD user account, and assign that AD account to the local administrators group on the designated server that it should administer. This way if the user account gets used on any other machine other than the one server it's assigned to, the account only has normal user account rights on the network. Is this an appropiate method for trying to secure servers and the admin rights to them? Is there some other approach we should be using? What about domain controllers, should they be logged in as domain admin?? thanks in advance for any input on this topic…

I just enabled folder redirection using group policies. Basically I enabled this for Application Data, Desktop, and My Documents. Now for some reason we've been having issues, so I deleted the GPO and server shares, but for some reason the workstations are still trying to sync. How can I remove rfolder redirection altogether? Thanks
