client login to domain controller behind VPN appliance - possible?
by Guest Todd H.- 3 replies

Greetings, I'm new to Windows Server 2003, but been around computing for quite a while. I'm contemplating a centralized profile solution for two mobile users (we hope to grow eventually to 5-10). For our mobile, dispersed workforce, I'm a dedicated Windows 2003 server externally hosted, and (hopefully) accessible behind a managed non-microsoft VPN appliance. This vpn appliance uses its own client software to connect. My question is whether/how an XP Pro client would initially login to the domain... because they'll need to login to their worksation first to launch the vpn client to be able to see the win2003 server at all. Is this a situation where t…

Server DNS/DHCP Configuration Questions

An office that I have had one two XP Home machines for several years is doing an upgrade and had to go XP Pro and Server 2003. We installed a new Dell 840 and I upgraded both work stations to XP Pro. The only problem is the long delay of signing into the server. I did some web searches and people are describing my exact problem as a DNS related. The workstations are not seeing the server at first and the requests are going out onto the web. Right now, we have a Linksys behind a Bellsouth (now the new AT&T!) modem doing the DHCP and DNS and all and I am using 192.168.1.100 as the starting scope. This office needs web access. So …

Adding New Disks

Hi, I have a client with a Dell server running W2K3 SBE. He has no hardware RAID, the RAID is setup through Windows Disk Management. He is out of space and needs to add new disks. When I have this issue with a server that has a RAID controller, I can easily add new disks, let the mirror rebuild, and then extend the partition. However, here I don't have this option. Is there a recommended way to add 2 new disks to the current Windows Mirrored set without having to rebuild the box? Any help is greatly appreciated. Regards, Matthew White

I have created a Catalog in Computer Management and can query this catalog in COmputer Managemen and it works. I wanted to make this Catalog available to all users on the Network via a web page. According to Microsoft this can be done. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/825487 When you use this asp script it will return the expected results in the web page but only on the WEB catalog and not the new catalog I have created. If you let it do the index of 300000+ documents it will come back and index one particular folder down the tree and ignore the rest, but there seems nothing different about that folder. I tried to add the folders i want indexed into the…

Whenever I try to run an NTBACKUP job, it backs up C: and D: drives fine, however it always fails on S: drive with the following error - "S: is not a valid drive or you do not have access to it" When I browse My Computer, S: IS a valid drive, and I DO have access to it. It has about 6-7 folders in it and I can open, browse and write to each folder in it. I also verified that I have full permissions to the foler. I've pasted below the NTBACKUP LOG and also the EVENT LOG Thanks for any help, -----------------------------NTBACKUP LOG------------------------------ Backup Status Operation: Backup Active backup destination: File Media name: "#######…

Hi, I am currently running Windows 2003 in a single domain with two DC's at one location with another location authenicating over the WAN to the two DC's. I am planning on setting up another DC at the offsite location for authentication. I just want to make sure I am not missing anything when setting this up so here are my plans: Setting up two sites -Building A with a special subnet -Building B with a special subnet - Connecting these through a site link and setting the servers in each. I will have two DC's so I will put a GC at each location. Also installing DNS on all the DC's. The part where I am confused is the DNS is it smart to put DNS on all …

Cannot change entries for "Access This Computer From The Network"
by Guest Polaris431- 1 reply

I have little knowledge of Windows 2003 or Active Directory so please bare with me. I have a Windows 2003 server connected on a LAN that also has a Domain Controller. Something happened a few days ago (don't know what) and it is no longer possible to access the server over a network. The guy who owns the system played around with Active Directory on the Domain Controller to see if he could get things working again but to no avail. After digging around, I discovered that there is a local policy on the server that is called "Access This Computer From The Network". It has only two entries in the list and neither of these are the defaults. In fact, not even adm…
