Power Saver in Display fails often
by Guest nesredep egrob- 0 replies

Just a bit annoying that I have to reset the power saver from time to time - in fact very often. When I set it - it will usually work 2-3 times and then pack in with the screen showing as I return. Unfortunately the Acronis backups I have are endowed with the same trouble - I suppose that I might have to reinstall OS but really I do not want to do that if it can be helped. Search function not Searchin'...?
by Guest Kenneth- 10 replies
Howdy, I just reinstalled Win 2000 Pro on one of our systems. Nearly all of its software is loaded, and working properly. A few minutes ago, I needed to locate a particular file on the system, and so, clicked Start | Search. In the appropriate field, I entered *.PST and launched the search. To my surprise, perhaps three seconds later, I saw "Search Completed, no files found" (or some such wording.) It seemed that the search ran with remarkable speed, and I know with certainty that the system had a PST file because it was running Outlook 2000. I assumed that I had entered the search criterion with a typo, and so, tried again, with greater care. …

by Guest TKHaw- 15 replies

After I shut down my machine, it goes through all the shut down stuff then I get a blue screen: STOP................ Driver_Power_State_Failure Nothing else happens, so I just power the machine off. I have tried to manually turn off all programs prior to shut down, but this does not change the screen from coming on. Any ideas ? TK

Can't read compressed drive
by Guest wvmontani- 3 replies
I have a PC running Windows 2000 Advanced Server. It has a second hard drive that has been compressed. This is used for data storage. The C: drive crashed and I lost the operating system. The C: drive has now been replaced and W2KAS has been reloaded. Trouble is, it does not recognize the second (compressed) drive. It sees that a dynamic drive is there under Disk Management, but won't assign a drive letter. How can I get the data back? Thanks. -WVMontani

Downloads often halt at 50KB. (Attempt #2.)
by Guest Robbie Hatley- 11 replies

(Second attempt. Hmmm... No responses at all to first attempt. Ok. I'll try again. I'll also post to the IE6 group, though I'm not really sure if this is an IE6 problem or a Win2000 problem; the two are so tightly intertwined.) I've been having a problem recently on two different computers, both running IE6 and Windows 2000 Professional: when downloading files from the Internet, the download often stops at 50KB, with Windows thinking that the download is complete, even if the actual file size was 1.38MB or 11.85MB or whatever. Once this happens, it can take many further attempts to get the download to complete. I did find a partial work-around, by acci…

How do I disconnect from a network share?
by Guest Ant- 5 replies

Hello! After connecting to a network share successfully that requires me to log in (user name and password) through a shortcut or manually (e.g., \\192.168.1.123\), how do I disconnect so that when I connect again without a reboot, I get a password prompt again since I am using shared machines (Windows 2000 and XP; good to know for Vista too if it is different). Thank you in advance. :) -- "What reason, like the careful ant, draws laboriously together, the wind of accident sometimes collects in a moment." --Friedrich von Schiller /\___/\ / /\ /\ \ Phillip/Ant @ http://antfarm.ma.cx (Personal Web Site) | |o o| | Ant's Quality…

No longer getting a "preview" of JPG images when viewing a Folder
by Guest scscompa- 6 replies

I have not been to these newsgroup/forum entries for years... Since Win 2000 Beta. Sorry, if I post this in the incorrect spot. Anyway - I have recently (yes, I still use Win 2000 Pro) had a couple of problems resulting from my installing latest Windows Update fixes. of two weeks ago I am not surprised with that -- I know how support of older systems can be a complicated matter -- and, in turn, I have resolved (with Microsoft's help) both of the key problems -- but, not this one: I no longer get a "preview" of a JPG when I single-click on the item when on folder-view. I can go through View->Customize folder and end up with a "fancy" preview (I ha…

unexpected Blue Stop Screen
by Guest Ushnell- 1 reply

In the history of using my computer running Windows 2000 PE I have never received such error screen but I guess it depends on what you are doing that triggers it to come up. It seems some program was busy accessing the hard drive and the indicator light in front of the PC was fully lit. I inserted a DVD in my CD\DVD drive then I got a blue screen : *STOP:0x0000001E (0xC000000, 0x7CC40ED9, 0x00000000, 0x7CC40ED9) KMODE_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED what the heck is this weird thing supposed to mean and how do I prevent it from popping up again? thanks in advance. -- Ushnell Fenell

Shortcut to change password dialog
by Guest rvaas- 3 replies
Hi everybody, I want to create a shortcut to open the change password dialog for the current user. The users can´t use Ctrl-Alt-Del because they only connect via Terminal Server - and they asked whether they could change their passwords whenever they want (it works when the password expires, but they want to control when they change it). Is there a way to open that dialog via explorer with command line options or WMI call (maybe via VBS) to open that dialog? Kind regards, Rudi
