cmd.exe and others: 0xc0000142
by Guest marcosignacio@gmail.com- 3 replies

Hi, Im experiencing some problems with cmd.exe (0xc0000142)'s popups, and sometimes initiating some services (ie mysqld-nt.exe). Note that I CAN run cmd.exe normally. The strange part of this is that this isnt happening always.. sometimes it does, sometimes it doesnt. I already ran hijackthis, online/local (updated) AV scanner, adaware, spybot S&D ant others, without any luck. Plus I ran sfc /purgecache and sfc /scannow with the same result. Any advice on this will be very appreciated. Thanks, Ignacio.

maintain user profiles when changing domain
by Guest JT in VN- 5 replies

We have rebuilt our server to a new domain. How can we keep user profiles with minimal interruption? I found the "Copy To" user profile function in System Properties but I'm not sure what exactly it copies over. Does it just copy over the users folders such as My Documents, Favorites, Desktop, etc? Or, does it also copy over settings like drive mappings and printer mappings and other settings? It is important that the Outlook settings also copy over (along with Outlook rules). Please help! We have a lot of PC's to migrate and manually copying over profiles and then re-creating drive mappings and printers and other settings is going to waste a lot of…

Hyperterm error (non-admin user) Windows 2000 Professional

When I try to run a hyperterm session as a non-admin user I get the following error mesage:- Windows has reported a TAPI error (80000048). Use the phone and modem options icon in the control panel to ensure a modem is installed properly. However, when I run as admin user it works fine. Funnily enough, there is no modem icon in control panel and I cant find modem.cpl either (this is a secure clamped down machine). Is there another way to stop this mesage?

A query on raid arrays
by Guest nesredep egrob- 1 reply

I have a 750 SATA disk on which I hold all my photos and video. When that disk is half full it will be a devil to backup. I therefore thought that I should install another similar disk in a raid array. Well I sat down and read and worked my way through it and eventually got there but not without some extra unexpected work - that being saving what was on the original 750GB disk as I got a message duing the installation that all data would be lost. I wonder if I got it wrong at some time as I would have thought that the new disk should have picked up what was already stored. It is now done - I have the raid array working fine now - I just wonder if I could have…

Can't Log On to Windows
by Guest Ushnell- 6 replies

Windows 2000 is treating me as if I am a thief that is trying to break into my own computer after I made a change to the Local Security Policy in the Management console. I don't know exactly what is causing the log on screen to say it can't log me on to the system but I think it's the "log on as system" setting I applied before restart that is causing this but why? any help to this problem will be appreciated. -- Ushnell Fenell

Script Triggered Following a Specific System Event
by Guest basis_consultant@hotmail.com- 2 replies

Hi, We are running Oracle and SAP on a Win 2000 server. Once or twice a week, the Windows server logs a system event of type 'error' and source='eventlog' ,which shuts Oracle down. Not much information is contained in the event description. There aren't any scheduled tasks at that time..To resolve this, and other, issues, we are looking to move the Oracle/SAP systems to a better Win2003 server. However, until that task will be completed, we are also looking a way to trigger a job which will execute a command script (*.cmd file) to start Oracle and SAP after Oracle crashes (Again, the event log is type 'error' and source 'eventlog'). So, can anybody pl…

is there an alternate login screen to Windows 2000 that can be used rather than having the user press CTRL+ALT+DEL all the time? (Similiar to the Welcome Screen introduced in XP that lists only the users on the system)

What is causing Certificate Request
by Guest AVB- 1 reply

Our Domain Controller is requesting certificates every minute to our old CA (which isn't a CA anymore). How can I determine what is causing these requests? The requests are failing with the Message: "Denied by policy module 0x80094800, The request for a cerificate template that is not supported by the Certificate Services policy: Domain Controller." TIA.

Computer Based Group Policy
by Guest gsmith@gbmc- 0 replies

I would like to create a computer based policy to customize start menu and desktop icons for Windows XP users. I know you can do this via a user-based GPO, but the computers that I need to apply these lockdown group policy features to are autologin pcs that log into the local worksation, but are members of a 2003 domain so therefore I need a computer based policy. If this can't been done via GP, are there other ways. I need to do things like create a policy that will allow no icons on desktop and nothing on the start menu. Thank you.

HIstory Folder Issue
by Guest Mike MIlano- 0 replies

I am very puzzled by the lack of items in the history folder; both internet sites visited and other docs. I open IE 6 and only sometimes i see some of the sites that I have visited but most of the time it is empty. And if it does shjow something, I open another instance of IE and there there won't be anything there!! Strange. I have seen after some search that maybe the History folder is corrupt and needs deleting, I tried that but I cannot do it obviously becasue it is a system folder, and even if I log on as the administrator, and so a different user, and insure that the folder is shared, it will give me an error message that it cannot be deleted as it …

Quick Launch toolbar re-arranged by OS
by Guest Green Fingers- 0 replies

Hi group, newbie to this group, oldie to W2K. I had my Quick Launch Toolbar nicely grouped with all my favorites together, then automatic downloads updated something and quietly re-arranged my toolbar alphabetically, which is something I really did not want as I was accustomed to my layout. Now I have to go back and redo it all over again. What I'd like to know is why Microsoft thinks they have to control everything. Just who says everyone wants or needs their QLT arranged alphabetically without asking? Their empirical domination (akin to that of Symantec in changing users' settings without permission) and their obvious bullying approach is not tolerable, especi…
