my appologies if this posts twice, I tried once before. I was trying to make it easier to access my win 2k machine from the XP pc's on my home network. Other 2 connect/share fine. Can see xp machines and printers from win 2k pc and can share printer on win 2k pc. I could never see the win 2k pc from normal "my network places" but could get on it by "search for computer and enter win 2k pc computer name & then user/pw. I could add shortcuts to xp pc but would lose them when i had to reboot xp pc. I was trying to change something on the win 2k pc, was tired of always fussing with it. Went to control panel-system properties-network Id and then clicked Net…

Control panel - Display
by Guest TKHaw- 5 replies

All of a sudden my W2k is acting funny. My background is a picture from a digital folder. When I go to Control Panel - Display, on the background menu there are no options that I can use. I can change nothing. All other portions of Display seem to be operable, all except Background. In addition the icon that were previously to the right of the Start icon on the screen are gone. Any assistance would be appreciated.

Error: Unable to determine volume version and state. CHKDSK aborted.

I have been using Acronis Disk Director to manage my partitions and, until now, it has worked pretty well. Today, however, I tried an operation that seems to have hosed one of my partitions, though I believe the data is still intact. These are all NTFS. Before, I had two partitions C: Primary, Active D: Extended/Logical I then ran a resize and create operation so that I would end up with C: no change D: shrink partition, leaving room at the end E: new primary partition created from D's space However, the actual result was that I got C: no change D: reports original size, 0 bytes free, unreadable If I try to chkdsk, I get the error in the subject line…

Hot key needed 1 2
by Guest sherwindu- 39 replies

I enter my email address and password to several browsers multiple times a day. Is there some way to set up a 'hot' key that can be used in my Windows 2000 operating system to make that job easier? I generally use Internet Explorer and Netscape. Will these browsers recognize a hot key from the operating system?

by Guest Ven- 5 replies

Hi! I have a windows server 2003 domain controller along with two other application servers. I created a new user in the Active Directory and logged onto the domain using his credentials from his desktop computer. While testing - I found out that Iam not able to save any files I created onto the "C" Drive or the "D" Drive, but I am able create a folder on "C" or "D" Drives and then I can save files inside the folders. Iam also able to save onto My Documents and Desktop. The error I get when trying to save onto "C" or "D" Drive is - "You do not have permissions to save in this Directory. See the administrator to obtain permission" I logout t…

Downloads often stop at 50KB.

(I asked the following question in one of these groups several days ago, but no one knew the answer, so I'm trying again, and also posting to two different groups. (I don't normally cross-post, but in this case it seems a good idea, because this issue seems related both to Win2K and to IE6.)) I've been having a problem recently on no less than two different computers, both running Win2K and IE6: when downloading files from the Internet, the download often stops at 50KB, with Windows thinking that the download is complete, even if the actual file size was 1.38MB or 11.85MB or whatever. Once this happens once, it can take many further attempts to get the downl…

Downloads often stop at 50KB.

I've been having a problem recently on no less than two different computers, both running Windows 2000 Professional: when downloading files from the Internet, the download often stops at 50KB, with Windows thinking that the download is complete, even if the actual file size was 1.38MB or 11.85MB or whatever. Once this happens once, it can take anywhere from 10 to 100 further attempts to get the download to actually complete. I did find a partial work-around, by accident: if I empty the temporary Internet files, the next attempt to download the file usually succeeds. It's as if Windows sees a 50KB file named "Fred.zip" in it's cache, says "ah-ha, the user is…

Slow logon to desktop - winlogon ?
by Guest +Bob+- 2 replies

I have a Win2KPro system that spends a long time starting up before the desktop becomes active. That is, it puts the desktop up fairly quickly after logon, but it takes a couple minutes before the system is really ready for the user to interact. You can see the hard drive access running wild while you wait. A check in task manager shows that winlogon is using 25-40% of the CPU during this time. It acts like a system that lacks disk space and/or memory, but there's 10gb free on both drives and 500m main memory - that's always been plenty in my other win2K systems. Swap files are 766/2048. The main memory has around 300m used while it's doing the slow log on…
