by Guest Apollo- 4 replies

Hi, Need to restrict users home folders to a set size. Would have used disk qotas but all infomation (project folders, department folders et al..) is kept on one logical D: drive. Any utilities that I can use to 'only' affect users home folders (even if this means I move all users home folders to one area). Thanks,

New Profile Assigned
by Guest A DeLew- 2 replies

Turned on my PC today and I suddenly have a new profile, that I did not create (or at least that I realized I created). The admin profile name is Janice. But this new profile is Alice.Alice-Dell. Everything seems to be the same as in the Janice profile. But the Alice profile has a new registration number. My PC is almost dead in the water it runs so slow. ANY idea as to what happened and how I can fix it? OS is Windows Prof2000, PC is an older Dell laptop.

Show Desktop does not work
by Guest Todd Cary- 7 replies

By mistake I tried to install an older version of Sim Town on my Win 2K computer and the "Show Desktop" no longer works. The Microsoft site mentions this problem, however I have followed their instructions along with other suggestions and there appears to be something else missing. I even reinstalled IE. One suggestion was to use this command: REGSRV32 /n /i:U shell32. I used that and it did produce the icon, but clicking on it does nothing (it's contents agree with other documentation I have found). What other process could be missing? Many thanks.... Todd

Some of my folders and files, including pst files were deleted. They are not in the recycling bin. I was installing a software shortly before that came from a trusted source. Later on it was discovered that the CD was corrupt. The first indication was that all of my e-mails were deleted along with personal folder (Microsoft outlook). -- Val

OS Attempts to Install Non-existent Device ????
by Guest ygo3@yahoo.com- 2 replies

We are trying to install a Maxtor ATA 133 IDE PCI controller card, and it simply doesn't work. The new wrinkle is this: The card has been physically removed from the system. Every time the machine boots, the "Found New Hardware Wizard" appears and attempts to install the non-existent PCI device! Every time we attempt to install, the driver install (or update) dialog tells us that the driver cannot be found, although it is there. So, we UNINSTALL the device, and the uninstall wizard confirms that the device has been permanently removed from the system, that is, until the next time we boot, and this sad tale starts all over again. Anyone seen the movie "Groundhog…

I have a windows 2003 server acting as file server. I want to move the file server to a new windows 2003 server. I have several share folders that I want to move from the old file server to the new file server. Is there a way that I can export all the shares with its permissions to the new server. After I moved the shares I can restore the data from backup. Is there an article on doing this or can someone tell me the best way to do this. Thanks

One thing that's always bugged me about W2K and Wxp is the start menu 'automatically' hiding 'unused' programs in the start menu of the desktop. I find this a disorienting time-waster. Any way to disable it? RL

External monitor on Docking Station - Wallpaper Problem
by Guest Carlo Baldini- 0 replies
Hello I have a user that is using an external widescreen monitor connected to his docking station for his fairly new HP nc6400 laptop. He is only using the external monitor, not both, and the external is coming through as monitor 1, his primary, and the other screen is greyed out. The screen displays fine, except for his deksotp wallpaper. For some reason his wallpaper is still displayed at the resolution of his laptop screen, not the external monitor. What's even weirder is that there is another copy of his wallpaper underneath that is displayed as fullscreen, so that he actually has two wallpapers, one on top of the other. This of course goes awa…

Windows 2000 TS, restricting users to 1 session
by Guest Chris Swinney- 0 replies

Hi all, I see that there are GPOs that can be set to restrict user creating more than 1 session for TS in Win 2003, but we have issues with a Win 2000 TS server. I have also noted that there are GPOs that use keepalive so that dropped session can be disconnected properly. We have remote users that connect in via VPN then use TS to run certain apps. Sometimes the VPN disconnects and the TS session is broken. I have set the option in the properties of the users so that they SHOULD be able to reconnect from any client, however, what appear to be happening is that the user attempts to log back on and a new session is started. I would like to set Win …
