When the 2000 screen apear the loading bar gets about 3 quarters across and BSOD appears. It mentions about a virus and says run CHDSK /F. How can I fix this? I really need the files on the laptop for work. I got the laptop from a friend but it does not have a 2000 disk with it. I have gone to bootdisk. com and downloaded 4 disks and 2 .exe files. These are currently on my memory stick. The laptop doesn't have a floppy drive do I need to put these files on a CD? Many thanks in advance for your help. Canna

How to Get Rid of Multi-boot WIN 98SE Option Leaving Only WIN 2000?
by Guest JOHNCHAP2- 5 replies

My startup is a multi boot to MS WIN2000, MS WINDOWS, or MS WIN2000 Recovery Console. I ended up with this several years ago when I upgraded from Win 98SE to WIN 2000. I want to get rid of the MS WINDOWS option and totally remove the old version so I can convert the drive from FAT32 to NTFS. Will removing the MS WINDOWS line from the BOOT.INI and WINBOOT.INI files do this or do I need to do some other things as well? Incidently, there are at least two versions of each of these files with today's date. Can I then simply remove the WINDOWS directory from the C Drive without screwing things up? Do I need to do anything else? For whatever it is worth, ther…

Dual boot XP/Vista and NTFS
by Guest Ham Pastrami- 2 replies

I'd like to get XP and Vista installed to my computer for sandbox tests (still prefer to keep 2k as the primary environment). I'm a little concerned about whether the NTFS update is going to impact the existing filesystem. Do I need to create separate partitions for the additional operating systems or will it be sufficient to install to different folders?

Hi, I have Windows XP Professional (home edition) on my PC. When starting the system all I receive is a blue screen indicating STOP 0x0000007B INACCESSIBLE_BOOT_DEVICE. The message indicates if this is the 1st time this screen apprears restart the computer or run chkdsk/f. (This is the 1st time this screen has appreared!) I cannot get to the desktop or any programme to run a virus check even!. I cannot shut down the PC until I hold down the shut down on the unit for 10 seconds. It also mentions to check for virus or any hardware that has been installed. I have tried starting in safe mode but no luck. The recovery cd does not clean or recover etc. No new…

W2K Frozen in Place
by Guest W. Watson- 8 replies

I built a PC for an elderly neighbor some months ago. When it is powered up it stalls with the W2K displayed and the gauge about 1/2 way across its span. I told him to leave it on overnight, but it's still in the same place. Unfortunately, it was likely subjected to some unintentional rough house treatment in recent weeks. It was probably turned on/off improperly, and moved about a bit carelessly as he worked on fixing the bench area where it is located. How do I get the machine unstuck? I recall something about putting it in safety mode with F8 during the early start. Comments. -- Wayne Watson (Nevada City, CA) …

Running Windows2000 Pro on new PC hardware?......
by Guest qinfo_esr- 2 replies

Has anyone had experience recently with loading and running Windows2000 pro on modern PC hardware? We have a client that had a PC die and all the software they where using was developed for and was only validated under Windows2000 pro. So to prevent the expence of potentially redeveloping anything, they want to just get a new PC and load it up with Windows2000 pro and the other software. Thanks, Erich

How to clear compatibility settings?
by Guest Ham Pastrami- 0 replies

Sometimes when installing old software I need to make a shortcut to the installer on the CD -- for example I:\setup.exe. After installing, I delete the shortcut. The strange thing is, Windows seems to remember the compatibility setting even when the shortcut is not being used. Furthermore it will remember the setting even for a different CD, so if I then try to install a newer program, which is incidentally also I:\setup.exe, the installer will say something like "Windows 95 is not supported". I then have to make the shortcut again and turn off compatibility mode. Since it appears that Windows actually stores the compability data somewhere other than the shortcut…

Problems with installing win2000 server on new Dell
by Guest bill allemann- 4 replies

I had an unused win2000 server package so I wanted to save some $ and use it for a low-tech server. I bought a new Dell SC440 and it comes with a "Server Assistant" software package on the install CD. I used the software to config a mirror RAID configuration with the 2 identical SATA hard drives. The BIOS boot screen shows one drive now, and displays a Ctrl-C prompt to access the RAID config. I created a C drive of about 5gb and left the remainder in an unformatted partition for now. The Server Assistant software will only install Win2003 as an OS, so I needed to do the usual setup with the Win2k CD. I downloaded a driver file for the SAS 5i/R RAID co…
