win2000 server on new Dell machine
by Guest bill allemann- 2 replies

I had an unused win2000 server package laying around so I wanted to save some $ and use it for a very low-tech server. I bought a new Dell SC440 and it comes with a "Server Assistant" software package on the install CD. The software seems to have dealt OK with a mirror RAID configuration with the two identical SATA hard drives. The BIOS boot screen shows one drive now, and displays a Ctrl-C prompt to access the RAID config. It appears that the assistant software will deal only with Win2003 server, though, to finish the OS install. A tech guy at Dell told me that there shouldn't be anything on the machine that would preclude using win2k as an OS. I bail…

Bad problem!
by Guest Mhaxx- 8 replies

This morning my Windows 2000 started using a brand new home directory: C:\Documents and Settings\MyUserName.DOMAINNAME instead of C:\Documents and Settings\MyUserName. Why?! This implies many things are lost (desktop, settings, etc): I suppose Windows found some problem on my original home directory. 1) How to fix this problem? 2) And how to back to my original directory home? Please, help!! Thanks, Massimo

Serial/USB Cable Difficulty
by Guest W. Watson- 1 reply

I have a Belkin serial/usb cable and it works fine most of the time. If I try it with program A, it works fine as com3. If I use it on program B, without A around, as com3, it fails. I bought a Cables Unlimited ser/usb cable, and it fails the same way. It always fails with B. Someone told me that w2k is not quite so friendly with drivers as XP, and that in this instance it may require tampering with BIOS. File Attributes Problem
by Guest Roger Fink- 0 replies

I'm trying to do a relatively simple thing with Windows Explorer, but it's turning out to be not so simple. In the profile I always use, which has full Administrator privileges, I want to uncheck the box that says <Hidden> for the <Local Settings> folder. When I do this the setting will stay unchecked for the session and will survive closing/reopening Explorer, but upon reboot, the box is rechecked. The actual Local Settings folder appears in the Explorer tree whether the Hidden box is checked or not - I believe this is because under <Tools/Folder Options/View>, the <Show hiddden files and folders> box is selected. I'd like to get that…

Is there a formula or site that can provide info on the ratio of FTEs to servers? Or maybe you have a general rule of thumb for something like this.

When I copy a big file(e.g.,200 MB) file from harddisk to usb key, in Windows XP, "copy c:\bigfile g:" will not return immediately, while in Windows 2000, "copy c:\bigfile g:" returns immediately. My question: I want to let "copy c:\bigfile g:" do NOT return immediately in Windows 2000. In anther word, I want it retunes only when the data is actually copied to USB Key. Is it possible? Thanks!

Setting the Clocks Back and Windows 2000?
by Guest Victor- 3 replies
O.K., here we are, November 4, 2007. Daylight Savings time is over, and it's time to set the clocks back. What's different this year is that, even after a reboot, Windows 2000 did not prompt me to accept a new clock change, nor did the clock on my computer go back automatically. It did go back on my XP computer, though (no prompting to accept the update). In Win2K, when I go to Settings > Date/Time Properties | Time Zone, "Automatically adjust clock for daylight savings changes" is checked. I don't want to manually adjust the Win2K time back one hour unless I'm sure that the time won't get set back automatically at some later date. What gives? H…

Task Bar Problem
by Guest David Vincent-Jones- 2 replies

We have a problem with the Task Bar on a laptop. The task bar suddenly showed up as a small white strip on the left side of the screen. I can make/pull this wider and at least now see the entire bar but it appears to be firmly stuck down the left hand side of the screen with the start button in the top left corner. I would appreciate a remedy for this problem. Thank you; David

Hard Drive partitions
by Guest Ushnell- 11 replies

I just bought a used Gateway computer from a neighbor and I've bumped into a problem that's causing myself to ask: what the hell was this person thinking! The Gateway contains Windows 2000 on it on a 9.52 or 10.00 Gigabyte hard drive but the big mistake he made is that he created three other partitions on the basic disk of the drive and the main drive C:\ where Windows stores the software files is the one that's loosing all the storage space and the rest are all beefed up. I've tried to fix this problem using Disk Management in the Administrative Tools section of the control panel and tried to see what happens by deleting the E:\ partition. I taught t…

Explorer.exe Crashes
by Guest mikeg- 3 replies

Explorer.exe crashes and restarts on one of my Windows 2000 Server SP4 servers, whenever I attempt to change any file or folder (delete, move, copy, rename, etc.) in Windows Explorer. You can browse folders with no problem, but if you try to change anything Windows Explorer and all desktop icons disappear without displaying any error and the desktop icons return after Explorer.exe restarts a few seconds later. The only way to make file and folder changes is in a CMD Window. At first I suspected a bad user profile, but this happens no matter what user account we use. Unfortunately this problem started such a long time ago (more than a year) I couldn't beg…
